Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Modern games have changed our expectations. If Chrono Trigger was released today, there would be a HUD on screen, with a big button that says "Press X To Bring Up Time Travel Menu." RPGs these day have quest logs and in-game hints; they no longer require players to remember things and make sure that all relevant information is constantly in front of you.

Of course, that's the charm of the older games.

This time, they deserve any insults that come their way. How can you forget the flying time machine you just got? How fucking retarded do you have to be?

Can't believe they just went through the sewer again. First time in the endurance run that they've pissed me off, lol.

They forgot that 2poch can travel through time.... wow...
They assumed that when Bobo said the 2poch's time compass has gone haywire when the Ocean Palace started floating that was actually the game saying the 2poch can't travel through time any more.
Unless the game says otherwise or forces them to at some point, I doubt they will use the 2poch ever again and they'll probably forget where they left it anyway.

Ha. I hadn't considered that.

But you can't hit half of the remaining sidequests without the 2poch :(

Is Ryan suffering from early onset Alzheimer? He totally forgot about the three chests in bangor dome...he had just checked out 5 minutes ago...wat

Reaction 1: 60 minutes yay!
Reaction 2: 45 of them spent fighting enemies they could have skipped with the 2pach

...I feel like we're just getting trolled :(

They may forget where they left it, but there's no way they are not using it ever again. One of them will have an user PM them the information and in the next episode they record one of them will go "Wait I want to test something I just thought up right on the spot"

Kind of like they "accidentally stumbled" into the true ending for Persona 4.

When they went to the Keeper dome, the game taunts them by bringing up the rename ship screen... :lol

EDIT: Fucking lol'ed when the rat stole 500g

I guess to their credit, the game should somehow have locked you out from traveling through time without using the Epoch (2poch) just for that first time after getting it back. Perhaps they could have just locked out the time portal in the Dark Ages by hinting at Schala still being alive, therefore her seal on the gate was still active.

No. The game is fine. It's reasonable to expect that a player will understand that a flying time ship is a flying time ship.

This is some middle school level stuff they're not figuring out. Maybe it goes to show how ridiculously fucking dumbed down games are today, since they're having literally HOURS of problems figuring out one of the easiest and most accessible JRPGs ever made. It may be a douchebag thing to say, I'm honestly getting to the point where I'm wondering if I can trust what these guys say about any game with any sort of complexity in the future, since they're so prone to missing everything in a game that requires the slightest bit of critical thinking. They took a huge step forward with the Golem Twins fight, and then two steps back again this episode.

Take a step back, and take a deep breath.

First of all, remember that the guy piloting the sticks on this ER is the same guy who put You Don't Know Jack and The Gunstringer on his top ten games list, while omitting Skyrim. He's playing this game because it's considered a classic and he's never experienced it before. Someone probably gave him a taste of some of the crazy story stuff, and he said "That sounds awesome! I want to see that now!" Ryan is the definition of a "content tourist;" he wants his games to take him for a ride. The closest thing to an RPG I can remember him loving was Fallout 3, and he basically just VATS-button-mashed his way through that because he loved the story.

Watching Ryan play a JRPG would probably be like watching me play Fifa - incredibly excruciating for those who know and love it.

Regarding the opinion of Giant Bomb: one thing I always respected about them is that they're quite honest about what they like and dislike, and they never filter their experiences or opinions. You may find it offensive that they're making so many stupid mistakes, but that's precisely why I love their content. You know exactly what you're getting. This is the outlet that never reviewed Dark Souls because they didn't feel like they could get their heads around it in time (besides, listening to Vinny talk about his experiences with it week after week on the Bombcast is far more enlightening than any single article would have been).

I can trust Giant Bomb. That's why I continually go there over any other outlet.

While this is all true, I think the ER would have been far more enriching (and more entertaining) with Dave and Vinny at the helm.

It's cool to see Ryan get out of his comfort zone, but he is actually the #1 worst person in the office to be playing Chrono Trigger. I dunno, maybe that's why he elected to do it.

The other issue is that while Ryan may be a tourist, he doesn't even remember the plot. Where they are in the game, they literally have no idea what's happening right now. If you asked them what time periods existed, they couldn't tell you. They have no idea.

Bonus points to Ryan!

Pretty funny how they got past the Golem Twins so easily, I'm replaying CT now and I just went with those two absorb shadow armor you can find and triple teched with Crono/Ayla/Marle after dieing the first time.

I doubt they'll forget about Black Omen floating around and they need 2poch to get to it, so I assume at some point they'll go back and fly 2poch for that. It'll just be interesting to see how long it takes them to get to it.

I've just stumbled on their latest QL. That takes precedence. (Drew, Dave and Vinny!)

God Tier group!

OH GOD HAHAHAHA THEY FORGOT THE EPOCH!

How are you guys playing this so badly?!

Does 2poch follow them to the End of Time or will they have to remember which time period they left it?

I have no idea, mostly because I was never dumb enough to leave it behind in some time.

My guess is that it follows you to the End of Time.

I love how they're complaining that they have to go through all this stuff, when they did it to themselves.

God dammit guys. How are you so bad at video games? You've been playing them longer than we have.

The funny thing is that this ER has made me hate Ryan more, but fall in love with Patrick.

I still think this ER would have been god tier if they had used Dave and Vinny.

Wow, how could neither of them think to use the time traveling flying machine. It seemed like for a moment in the future he was going to go back to see if he could use the "2pach" but forgot where the time portal was and figured that the game had taken it away from him.

I haven't finished watching it yet, but I just got to the point where they are walking around the future. This is by far the best run so far, as they've not done anything that I would consider really stupid. Forgetting about the 2poch isn't nearly as dumb as you guys are making it out to be. I honestly wouldn't have thought about it immediately. It's nowhere near as bad as them constantly ignoring the combat "hints" (i.e. explicit directions).

You literally cannot leave the dark ages (where they were at) without FLYING the fucking 2pach. They CANNOT leave that island without riding in their time machine.

Now think about what you just said again.

but they prolly wouldn't have renamed them!

Another reason Dave and Vinny would have been better.

Dude, the Epoch is a literal flying time machine. How could you not think to use it to get to other places in space and time?

I haven't even played that many JRPGs, but the trope of, near the end of the game getting transportation that allows you to easily travel throughout the world, is apparent to me. I don't know why they'd assume the game take a step back in terms of openness.

Maybe they'll go through the whole game and just go to the final area from 12 000 BC. It's been a while so I don't remember if it actually matters what time you go there in.

It doesn't, and they don't even have to go there so I wouldn't be shocked if they go 'how do we get there? I DUNNO!" and end up fighting lavos without it.

Ryan doesn't have that expectation, though. What was the last JRPG he's played?

they mention they don't wanna read spoilers or comments but they read this thread. i'm sure they'll know they messed up in the next video.
