Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

The craziest thing about how they play is that they get new abilities and don't try them out. I can't imagine not trying every single attack in a jrpg no matter how dumb its name is.

Especially considering how dumb the name is, and when it was released.

Yeah, I felt the same way. When I played CT or really any game like it, the second I learned a new ability I couldn't wait to try it out and see what it did. My curiosity would just be way too strong, I'd have to use it in the next battle after I learned it.

If you keep the Core alive the whole time, then Retinite's defense won't be raised when you attack it. Use a spell that will heal the core (like Lightning, Fire) occasionally to win the battle faster. It'll run away when it's alone. Thus, do not destroy the core first!

They were pondering doing that before the video ended, so they may try that tomorrow. Also they were considering attacking the legs instead.

I can't blame them for not knowing about Confuse, I never knew about that either as a kid. Really really terrible spell name. The game is still easy without it though, they just need to start thinking things through instead of beating their heads against the wall. Why was Brog casting Water 2 every single turn even as he's dying and hardly anyone is attacking? That doesn't make any sense, but they never even stopped to think about it.

"Attack enemy w/ Confuse 4 times"

I would say that is enticing enough to at least try it despite the self-referencing confusion. If it was literal, why 4 times? And how do you "attack" with confuse? Then you see Brono cut the enemy 4 times and the rest is history. My middle school self strikes again.

You could reference "outside the box" thinking but they would probably ask where the box is.

Sort of relevant, but i've been playing through Chrono Trigger on and off for a few months, and i've just now finished pulling myself through
The fiendlord's keep, and am about to fight Magus
. Someone tell me the best is yet to come? :p I guess i'm only roughly halfway through the game, but I feel a bit worn out.

Not sure why Confuse is such a big deal, but the simple fact is Crono doesn't even have any status effect techs (which is usually true for most traditional RPG main character, because they tend to be offensive-minded), so logic dictates that Confuse isn't really what the name may suggest. We can all agree that it's a badly translated ability, however, for anyone that is competent in the genre and actually reads the description, it isn't hard to figure it out. Unfortunately, all evidences show that Ryan is neither. So let's not beat a dead horse shall we? :)

I'd push through...that location is long and repetitive compared to what comes next.

Logic dictates that a spell named Confuse and says "hits enemy with confuse" does something other than confuse the enemy? Now you're just being silly. Anyone who knows anything about JRPGs knows that status effect spells are a complete waste of time. Unless you just feel the need to cast every spell in your arsenal just to see what it looks like, there's absolutely nothing in the game to indicate that you should ever bother using that attack.

Don't get me wrong; I hope they figure it out. Ryan will probably mis-click it at some point and they'll go AWWW SHIIIIIIIIIIT as Brono cuts up the enemy. Or they'll get enough tweets about it to where they'll have to try it out. But to say that it's blindingly obvious is to be incredibly disingenuous about the ridiculous translation.

I rarely used Confused too.

Patrick: We should use some of our weaker characters.
Ryan: OK
Patrick: Give them the nice equipment our current party uses.
Ryan: Nah.
*wipes*
Ryan: Let's not use those guys.

Confuse is Brono's second best personal attack next to Lumi. Strap on a Rainbow and use Confuse. You guys are nuts.

Personally Ive always been a fan of Volt Bite.

I feel like you didn't read all of my post. You would be right except for the fact that the description makes no sense (as someone else pointed out) and that Crono is an offensive character possessing no other status effect tech (which I've stated). Therefore, for anyone that pays attention it is not a leap to conclude that maybe Confuse isn't what it appears to be. Furthermore, Marle already have a tech that confuses enemies called Provoke. Anyway, I never said it was obvious, and I completely agree the translation is bad. However, I don't think it's incorrect to conclude that a discernible individual would be able to puzzle it out despite of that, and in this case Ryan is not that kind of person (as he demonstrated plenty in his play style).

Sorry for dredging that up again!

Yeah, I was hoping they'd change the equipment, not the characters.

They did talk about leveling up the other characters, and to be fair, the Ozzie sidequest isn't terribly great for leveling up weaker members because it's basically a string of boss fights. I'm hoping they mess around with Ayla/Marle/Lucca in the sand pit and gain some levels there. I'd love for them to discover Marle's a boss healer.

EDIT: The only thing that bothered me really this episode was them scrolling through the dual tech menu, going "we're going to need to use Heal Beam every round" and scrolling past Cure Wave like five times without pause.

Good episode. Glad to see them make progress after yesterday's kerfuffle. And thinking about how Confuse could help them take out Retinite, very advanced thinking for the guys. :P

Good progress. Patrick made a good point that they could use their tried-and-true trio of Crono, Frog, and Robo on tough bosses when needed, and on the side, can level up the weaker characters in dungeons with stronger enemies, such as, the underground cave.

They missed on the fucking Flea Vest because of their ignoring of other characters. >:(
It's a bloated MP attack on a single target which doesn't net much more then a critical after gaining that much TP. There's way better options.

That complaint is expecting a little much.
1) How would they know beforehand Ozzie, Slash and Flea had ACTUAL items.
2) When they got crushed by them they obviously weren't going to switch out to lesser used characters.

The first time I played the game I never used Ayla. I thought she was useless because you never got new weapons for her.
I just stuck to my fave 3 or 4 characters the whole game. Crono, Robo and Marle/Frog.

I killed Magus too.

In new game plus is when I tried all the "alternate" dialogue choices, and went exploring for hidden items and did side quests and stuff. Then much later looked at gaming mags for secrets and then even later FAQs.
People have some really high expectations for these guys when it's pretty much their first time playing the game and the last JRPG either of them probably played was FFX. If you want to criticize them for stupid mistakes that's fine, but some of this specific stuff is kinda ridiculous.

They are going to get crushed to bits when they fight the boss in this side quest dungeon with their current play style.
I also still weep whenever they decide to skip out on the free 100 tech points and 1000 exp enemies.

If there's one thing i think would make ER threads (and perhaps a new ER itself) more interesting is if they play a game that not a lot of people have played.

Since CT is such a classic, there's so many people saying "they should've done this" or "they missed that". A lot of those issues go away with a lesser known or newer game.

That's why the DP endurance run was so amazing. I got to see that weird-ass game from start to finish without having to actually play it.

I've considered watching the P4 endurance run, but holy crap - that's a huge time commitment.

Ozzie does kind of announce they are "amazing" because they each have [insert item here]

Unfortunately neither of them seem to be big JRPG players. For a lot of us, given the volume of these games we play it's an obvious hint. In their case, it simply wasn't.

They're close to getting the Rainbow Shell. It was a good ER today.

Ryan: FrenzyBand! That classic Baltimore band!
Patrick: Side quests are accessorypalooza

Haha.

Today was a great episode.

Why? Because they played like normal human beings playing through a video game.

I checked my DS save to see what level i was when I finished the game. I'm lvl 63 in the Dimensional Vortex, so I probably finished the game around 61-62. I don't remember what the lowest acceptable level is to beat Lavos, but they have a long way to go.

I can't believe they passed the rocks that give all the XP and Tech Points. Bah.

Oh well good episode none the less.
