Gintama° Series 3 |OT| It's Not Digimon Tri, But It'll Have To Do!

Never could get past the first few minutes of the first episode. Really do want to give the series a fair show though.

The first episodes are the worst because it was struggling with its identity. After episode 25, it is when it gets comfortable with its direction.

It does have a bit of a rough start, the first 20 or so episodes are mediocre IMO.

Agreed, and the first episode is a filler isn't it? But yes the early episodes are mainly focused on introducing some of the characters, but it kind of fumbles with tone and doesn't really establish what type of show it wants to be.

After the first 30 or so the show comes into its own with some really good arcs, switching between some emotional and serious ones to comedic and even heartfelt moments.

2015 best anime year confirmed.

And that OVA, good damn. I had Ring a Ding Dong stucked in my head when I lived in Japan and the song was playing along with the Docomo TV CM. Now it's stucked in my head again noooooooo.

As someone pointed out in the comments, Gintama actually got in trouble for mocking a politician in the Renho Arc. Apparently that Arc probably won't hit DVD because of it even.

I was wondering, what was that psycho pass remark was reference to? Usually Gintoki says random name of a show or remark it always reference to a colleague seiyuu in the gintama but there nothing in that segment that reference to the tv series psycho pass.

And nothing was lost. The Renho was one of the meh arcs.

Gintama is back and its still going strong as ever. Madao sure never gets a break. Poor fella got zapped by Piccalo.

The Opening and Ending are great especially the former. Need more Gintama.

Well, that was a great final episode of Gintama. It was a good run this time.

When's Digimon Tri start?

It ain't Gintama without making constant DBZ jokes and references. Welcome back Gintama

question. who voiced parody piccolo?
because the voice actor did too good of a job to mimic the real va for piccolo. had me thinking they actually got Piccolo's VA to do this parody.

For that? South Park must be mind-blowing to them.

I think it's more of a Cultural thing.

Also, let's not forget this is a Shonen Jump Series. Shonen are aimed at younger Boys, so having a Political Satire in there, an unexpected on top of that, is pretty shocking, even if it is what you expect from Gintama

Huh. Just remembered that they had used the same "single antenna" idea for a previous Namek parody. Although that one was better looking. At least when they were bald.

He doesn't seem to be credited, so I'd assume it's one of Gintama's standard male VAs.

Gintama always seemed like a seinen or something close to me.

I won't deny that, but it's a Fact that it's in the Shounen Jump, thus the Anime will always have a certain percentage of Kids watching it.
I'm curious how much they have to apologize for that Stunt hahaha.

I haven't watched the episode yet, but is Sunrise not animating and producing this season? Been hearing rumblings that they are not, and I don't see their logos in the opening credits.

If so that sucks.

Correct, it's BN Pictures. I can't say that I'm too fussed because Gintama has never looked particularly good, regardless of which studio was producing it.

Isn't that just a subdivision of Sunrise or something? If it is a completely different studio, I certainly wouldn't be able to tell from the first episode. And Gintama looks pretty good at times.

I have to disagree with that one. This new opening for example is not done well as Sakura Mitsutsuki, which came out a long time ago. Sunrise did a fantastic job with Gintama. Its one of those instances where I would rather watch the anime than read manga.

I'll watch the episode and see. There are some sick arcs coming up, so I hope BN rises to the occasion with the proper OST and animation quality.

It's basically part of Sunrise that has been separated to create a new studio that will handle Sunrise's former non-Gundam daytime shows and Tiger & Bunny. However, some staff has changed due to that split.

Production-wise, there's a new director (who previously was an episode director for the show, and also just worked alongside Gintama's original staff in Earth Defense Club), new designer and maybe a new main writer too (no official credits for series composition right now, but the first episode was scripted by a new writer). Of course, it's still based on the same manga and so far they seem to be trying to go for the same style as the original anime, rather than some odd new direction.

I do feel some of the joke timings are a bit different, though. Not that it's worse or something. Still we have some amazing arcs coming up and judging by how the first episode goes, we're in for a helluva ride.

It's been years since I've watched the show. Has anybody ever made a list of essential episodes?

Really, I didn't notice a change honestly and wouldn't know it wasn't Sunrise...does this mean no more straight-up Gundam references they could get away with?

I agree the OP was pretty lackluster, and a bit generic. It pretty much hit all the usual tropes of a Gintama OP, though. Seems like a mix of a lot of them, for example when Otae and Kyubi whack away Kondo and the other dude, that was from Stairway Generation basically.

I really don't mind the OP considering the series just started from a long break. And for it to contain some of the tropes from earlier OPs was a good way to show that Gintama hasn't changed. Plus the song is really catchy and great.

Anyways the only change I see is the visuals. If you look closely you can tell that the artstyle slightly changed.

Okay good, it seems they will be going backwards for the next episode which should of aired before the Light Saber Bro Arc but got skipped due to the short season last time.
