Give me a handheld that's got all this....

DS is more than capable of doing all that stuff at super ease. it's just a matter of developers making the software.

and although Nintendo has already showed off both, someone can totally bust out a sweet camera, and/or a MP3/MPEG player.

PSP graphics aren't happening for obvious reasons though.

It really comes down to ranking the importance of certain features (games, music, cell) and looking at devices that fit those needs since there's no one device that does it all and well. The closest you might come to an all-in-one device is with a smart phone with a built-in camera. You've got video, music, gaming (emulators), a cell phone, as well as a PDA. If you're really focused on games, i'd look at a PSP and a camera phone.

What are you going to store the movies and MP3s on, huh? huh? huh? And 67Mhz ARM 9 ain't exactly gonna do MPEG 4 decoding at the swiftest of speeds.

Needing a hardware add on to do all this (at the very least for SD card reader adapter) isn't quite doing it "at super ease".

Dont count Nokia out. I am looking forward to what they bring out to replace N-gage.

I think they will announce the N-Gage 2 only to be beaten a week later by Nintendo announcing GBA 2.

Well mobile phones with HD's are on their way. Maybe the new Nokia console and GameBoy will have harddisks?

i see the perfect all in one handheld device in two forms:

a) phone + camera +hdd( audio & video) + high-end graphics +movable screen ala the motorola mpx + high level pda functionality+ wii-fi

b) same as a , but no phone, a touchscreen and a buttton layout for gaming

How do all these new devices keep cool as the power increases? PPCs used to fascinate me for the fact that they never got warm, and had no air cooling.

My Zodiac gets farkin hot after a few hours of movies, MP3s, games and GAF wi-fi browsing. No good support from big commercial developers, though. Touchscreen too, HAWT! It'll always be niche though.

The DS will never have good support for most of those features because of it's proprietary nature.

Hey Musashi, how are you watching movies on your Tapwave Zodiac?

I just watched my first full-length movie (Ghost In The Shell: Innocence) on PSP this Christmas morning... in bed... with headphones on. OMFG I love this thing.

I've also been reading manga on my PSP. But for music and wi-fi, I gotta also carry my Zodiac around. The PSP does games, movies and manga. The Zodiac is music and internet.

Che! how is that manga PSP thing working out? I imagine you just load up jpgs on the mem stick a browse through them on the PSP.

I see that that image is fitted to the width of the screen, can you scroll the screen up and down with the d pad to scan the entire page?

Yup, drop manga into the PHOTO folder and browse away. You can orientate it horizontally or vertically, zoom in and out (with the square button and analog nub), cycle through pages with the shoulder buttons and that's about it. But it works surprisingly well.

Two complaints though. Since manga almost always require you to fill the screen width-wise (you can make the page fit vertically on the screen but it'll be a real strain on your eyes), you have to scroll around with the analog nub. That would be fine, except the PSP needs to "re-focus" new parts of the page that you scroll to and it takes a couple seconds before it unblurs. Kind of puts a damper on fast action sequences.

Other complaint is that the PSP won't view anything other than jpg... (does it even view gif?). A lot of scanslated manga out there now come in .png format. Oh well.

There's different programs you can use; I've got Kinoma (comes with the Zodiac but seems to suck; I always get audio problems, and it's definitely something related to the Zodiac OS because the same program on my Treo 600 works perfectly) and MMPlayer, which allows you to play .avi files straight out instead of having to convert them first, unlike Kinoma. If you get MM Player, make sure to get Pocket DVD Studio For Palm (which you can get for free) which lets you shrink down DVD movies for an easy fit onto SD cards.

Now maybe it's just the way I compressed the files and put them onto my PSP, but while movies look awesome on the PSP, they still look much sharper and cleaner on the Zodiac IMO.

hmm, all the promo stuff looked crystal clear. Does anyone have pictures of compressed movies running on the PSP?

I'm ripping and encoding DVD's to AVI and then setting up the file compression for whatever seems best. Watch them on MMPlayer. FAQ here: http://www.emuboards.com/invision/index.php?showtopic=14045

What I really wish I had was a program that sequenced the jpeg's that comics are on. And allowed me to zoom in, etc. It's too sloppy just looking at the image files. Nothing on PalmOS for that yet, but anyone who reads comics on PC should check out CDisplay (google it).

Man, SD cards are a lot cheaper than memory sticks! I got a 1GB card for the Zodiacs slot the other day for 65 dollars.

Damn, the PSP is going to rule here. It's going to be popular with the game people and the gadget and tech people. Can't wait to see what all parties cook up.

you must have big pockets, che. or a man-purse. i'm still not comfortable with the idea of carrying my psp around, but once i get a bigger memory stick i'll have to try reading manga on it. that's a neat idea.

Fast and easy batch conversions with Irfanview, I'm not worried :D

As for the refocus thing, I't snot enterly unexpected on my part, kind of like browsing images on the camera (I used to have a cybershot) and the images would first appear as a big blurry thumbnail and a second later they'd clear up as the camera fetched the full image from the 'stick.

Nintendo should launch an official multimedia package for the DS. Include a cartridge-based SD-compatible camera that goes into the GBA slot, a PDA-like software to store photos, movies and music that come in through the SD card.

A winner is Nintendo.

I own an Archos av480, so movies, pics, and music is taken care of. I'm getting a portable laptop in a few months as well. Games will be taken care of as well
