Why didn't they hand it in to lost property?

That was what i thought. I would like to know the real story behind the phone amd how much Gizmondo payed to secure it.

uh, why not? It's a bar. People drink, leave shit all the time.
I think it's a bit different when you're talking about carrying trade secrets worth millions of dollars and you've probably had to sign legal documents that put you up shit creek if it's lost or leaks while in your possession. Here's a thought, maybe don't take it to a bar with you when you're planning to get hammered. I guess some people really are that fucking stupid, though.

As far as I can tell, I didn't swear any allegiance or even recommend another site to read it at.

On the web, we vote with our page views. Gizmodo has shown time and again to be a poorly run and very unprofessional organization.

Why reward them with page views?

They have the scoop of the year so far. Just stop. I don't care if they eat puppies.

People where spotted with the original iphone i the wild, or the nexus one, or the ipad factory photo. It isn't a matter of people being stupid, but as someone said above, 'what better way to test a device that is always attached to your hip than attaching it to someone's hip.' I'm paraphrasing but the idea is old as dirt and just because its an 'iphone' doesn't make it special in that regard.

I hope the full story of how this unit got "lost" comes out soon because it is definitely all very shady. No way did some guy just leave this behind in a bar.

Nothing this big will ever leave the Apple prison without reason, this was leaked deliberately. It was in the iPad picture too!

I agree, given Jobs' almost puritanical war against visible seams in the last few generations of products, no way does it ship looking like that.

Aside from that, how did the purported individual get the device out of Cupertino?

This iPhone doesn't look very Apple-ish. Maybe that's why it looks so good. I like it.

edit: Oh, and I guess that Gizmodo won't be Steves favorite gadget blog anymore.

Why?

We're as skeptical—if not more—than all of you. We get false tips all the time. But after playing with it for about a week—the overall quality feels exactly like a finished final Apple phone—and disassembling this unit, there is so much evidence stacked in its favor, that there's very little possibility that it's a fake. In fact, the possibility is almost none. Imagine someone having to use Apple components to design a functioning phone, from scratch, and then disseminating it to people around the world. Pretty much impossible. Here are the reasons, one by one.

The only problem I'd currently have is the mini-sim. I would gladly update from 3GS to 4. But I would need a new sim. :(

How often do you change your SIM card? I put mine in once and never touched the slot again.

i used to change sims from my iPhone to Android whenever i felt like it, but now i'm convinced the iPhone is the best in terms of apps, so i decided to stick to it till the new one is out.

it looks like an Apple product - just not a portable Apple product.

It has more in common with the new iMacs than anything apple has ever called an iPhone or iPod.

The seams and the circular buttons are the major things that look un-Appleish.

No, all you have to do is cut off all the excess plastic.

I'm fairly certain its carrier got weak, and took it to the bar thinking it was a golden ticket to getting laid. He weighed the risk vs opportunity, and decided that it was in his favour. Bad judgment is quite human.

Micro SIM is a SIM cut down to the chip, without the extra plastic of the mini SIM (like the one the iPhone has now).

The system for the SIM tray is the same. It works.

oh, havent seen those yet. so i would have to get a micro sim from my provider to use it with the new iPhone?

What better way to test a prototype smartphone's usability in the wild, by chaining it to your wrist, like everyone else does?

That wasn't really my point. Obviously I was exaggerating, but I think if one were given a prototype of a multi million dollar product, one would take extra special care to make sure it wasn't left behind.

Gouken said:

It'll come inside the iPhone, just like every other iPhone has. I've had a new SIM with each version of the iPhone.

Sooo... it has no slot for memory cards?
Or did I miss something?

knowing apple, there won't be a memory card slot. besides that would kill off any higher storage versions they would release later.

It'll probably come with the equipment, but as rezuth mentioned, you can also cut down your own. Just make sure to match the micro SIM form factor, so it fits on a micro SIM slot or tray.

which is why I tend to believe the comments that this was stolen, not lost.

perhaps from a bar, perhaps from within apple.

Exactly. Suspiciously unlike Apple products. When you see the iPad or the iPhone 3G/S, you can really tell that it's an Apple product. This one, notsamuch.

Person probably got wasted.

yeah, that’s why I called fake on it at first. :lol

oops.

anyway, it’s almost 100% certain this isn’t final hardware. maybe some details will change by the time they show it off in the summer.

Although, honestly, I’m thinking the side buttons will stay the same.

well that's stupid! assuming i wanna use another phone which uses a regular sim, that mean i need to go out and get another sim, which mean it'll deactivate my iPhone sim.

So am I crazy or is buying knowingly stolen goods a crime? Also, they better hope it did not cross state lines (story makes it unclear) as then it would be potentially a felony.

There is not way Gizmodo can argue they did not know it was stolen.

God I hope not.

Stolen or Lost? The lines get a bit blurry if the employee was drinking and lost it. I don't think anyone stole it from him.

Maybe there is a holder that can make it fit in a regular SIM tray, like microSD and SD cards? I'm not familiar with microSIMs though.

Some providers have twin SIMs for that. You have 2 SIMs with the same info, service, etc. Only one can be used at a time though.

:lol at all the wannabe apple-lawyer white knights. how dare gizmodo defile apple's honor in such a way? justice must be swift and brutal

The lines are blurry because no one has a clue where this phone really came from except gizmodo and Apple.

I'm pretty sure being in possession of a consumer gadget, no matter how sought-after, has never gotten anyone laid.

well i know if I was said apple employee and I lost the top secret new iphone, I would say that I was robbed at gunpoint and stripped naked as well....:lol

Nobody actually has exact information on whether it was stolen or lost, it seems. If I lost it, I'd definitely tell Apple it was stolen, though...
