no, I personally don't believe in Android yet. I know it's out there, but I'm not convinced it's up for the fight. It looks like an also-ran, and tbh, a true competitor can't win by doing things that look like what Apple already has done with more style. a true competitor will have to do *their own thing* and do that shit well. to me, that's blackberry and Microsoft. and of those 2, only Microsoft is interested in broad adoption and has an OS and chipset specs powerful enough to create a unique, different and worthy alternative experience.neojubei said:Don't you mean android? Apple best kept secrets are given to an employee to take out to a bar?
It's cool though, I like that kind of marketing.

gcubed said:i dont believe thats right, they have an early upgrade available, but its 299/399... so you dont have to pay full retail, but its still quite hefty
Technosteve said:why would apple give it to gizmodo? they are the B tier technology site. In all of apple's history have they given up there new unreleased units? If that is final design you know how much money the accessory market would pay to have that unit. They would have two months head start in getting products out before everyone else.
If that is the final design, it reminds me very much of a Sony Ericisson phone. If the ceramic patent from daring fireball is true, then the entire enclosure is glass/ceramic and the aluminum band is what's holding the electronics in. It would make the unit heavier and ridged. I wonder how good heat dissipation would be, since the ceramic can either dissipate or insulate.

It seems like there's a certain point where cramming a higher resolution in such a small space gives you so little back that it's not worthwhile. I've never felt my iPhone looks low res or needed a higher res screen. Have any of the rest of you? I'm seeing companies trying to cram high res screens in such a small space and just can't understand why because in the end, it seems like you're taking a hit in performance for little visual gain. I'd rather have better performance and battery life than an increase in res that I might not even notice unless I did a side by side comparison.

unfortunately, perception is reality. perception is that where it counts, in the largest, most obvious places, it's an also-ran.jonnybryce said::lol
Literally everything you see coming from Apple lately is copied from Android, both on hardware and software side. Android has more things different than iPhone OS than the same. You make no sense. Android shows contact's facebook pictures and statuses in texting, for example. That's an original idea that Apple is now copying. Android has had folders since forever. Android is more than an iPhone OS clone, and iPhone has been the OS that's shockingly become familiar and safe, with webOS and Android trying new ideas, and Apple taking the ideas they like from them.
indeed. anyone who's used a Droid can testify to the value of a high resolution. Droid screens look amazing. Never used a Nexus one, so I can't speak on it...but the Droid screen is to die for.brotkasten said:The higher the DPI, the better. It's better for reading text and I hate it, when I can count the pixels of my display. :lol It's probably the only thing I really love about my Touch Diamond. 640x 480 @ 2.8" is awesome.

the brilliance comes in how different, yet equally compelling the experiences are. and if MS and their developers can do it right, it'll be a fantastic option. unfortunately, the front-facing camera sold me on the new iPhone, I think. I expect that to also be on a fall/winter revision to the iPad as well.

I think everyone understands that. The confusion starts when the conversation implies importance to these details that the public doesn't really care about. We'd all be using Linux on homemade PCs if it mattered.Talon- said:Some people don't understand that others will take freedom to third-party apps and more customization over a sleek but closed experience.

So you go on about Android being different (and better) and you're two examples are Facebook statuses on texts and folders. Cool.

Im in a similar situation. Im still within the 3 year contract I signed for the original 3G back in July almost 2 years ago.
So, based on stuff Ive read on Howard Forums, I would be eligible for a hardware upgrade sometime this winter.
...at which point, I would probably end up just waiting till next summer when the new model comes out :lol

Futureman said:Well if he's going on and on about how Android is more different than similar to the iPhone, you'd think it'd be nice if he gave ONE example, which he didn't.
I'm siding with the camp that these phones are so damn similar now that it really isn't that big of a deal who you go with. Similar to the Windows/OS X debate. I used to praise OS X to people, but honestly, Windows has matured to a point where they you can't go wrong with either.

The fact that it has mini-sim is a good indication that Apple isn't leaving AT&T anytime soon.esquire said:The prototype looks lovely. I do wonder if the seams will remain in the final design (just seems very unlike Apple to have them there) but it's not a deal breaker either way. Nice to see the Apple haters are out in full force to decry a product that half of them are going to end up buying anyway.
That's spiteful and hilarious if true.

Zzoram said:It doesn't look much smaller at all. Maybe 3.4" diagonal instead of 3.5"? I personally want a 4.0" iPhone but if this has a 960x640 screen, I might finally buy one.
Then don't. Since it is exactly double the resolution and approximately the same size screen it should scale fine. Just don't be surprised if your app starts to look dated against the competition.Wii said:960x640 display? :/
