i personally want to see how this is gonna ruin Apple, it seems so unlikely they'll go down though, They're friggin rich! but i hope this will keep the competition healthy for all smartphones.

There is only one organization this may ruin, and it certainly isn't Apple.

Competition is already healthy so I don't get what you are saying

There is already plenty of competition. The iPhone has changed the face of the smart phone market and the result has been lots of fantastic competition. I'm not convinced we'd be where we are today without the iPhone.

I don't understand why you'd want to see that destroyed.

WHY AM I POSTING GAWKER? CAUSE STEVE JOB IS A BAD ASS MOFO

techcrunch said:
Tate:

If Dylan was 20 today, how would he feel about your company?

Would he think the iPad had the faintest thing to do with “revolution?”

Revolutions are about freedom.

Jobs:

Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom. The times they are a changin’, and some traditional PC folks feel like their world is slipping away. It is.

Here’s a later back-and-forth (note the jab Jobs takes at Tate at the end):

Tate:

Was it a “technical issue” when Microsoft was trying to make everyone write to the Win32 API? Were you happy when Adobe went along with that?

You have the chance to set the tone for a new platform. For the new phone and tablet platform. The platform of the future! I am disappointed to see it’s the same old revenge power bullshit.
…
PS And yes I may sound bitter. Because I don’t think it’s a technical issue at all — it’s you imposing your morality; about porn, about ‘trade secrets’, about technical purity in the most bizarre sense. Apple itself has used translation layers and intermediate APIs. Objective C and iTunes for Windows are testament to this. Anyone who has spent any time coding knows the power and importance of intermediate APIs.

And I don’t like Apple’s pet police force literally kicking in my co-workers’ doors. But I suppose the courts will have the last say on that, I can’t say I’m worried.”

Jobs:

You are so misinformed. No one kicked in any doors. You’re believing a lot of erroneous blogger reports.

Microsoft had (has) every right to enforce whatever rules for their platform they want. If people don’t like it, they can write for another platform, which some did. Or they can buy another platform, which some did.

As for us, we’re just doing what we can to try and make (and preserve) the user experience we envision. You can disagree with us, but our motives are pure.

By the way, what have you done that’s so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?

You do know the whole "you can't comment until you do something" argument is what idiots result to when they feel like they are losing in a debate. There is a reason you will never see that argument in an actual debate among intelligent people.

the gawker dude went on a whole tirade on why ipad doesn't allow this and that, and steve's like if they don't want to adhere to apple's policy don't develop on the system.

Other than the Jeff Bell line at the end, he was on point. The blogger comes off like a drunken cry-baby. What I don't understand is why Jobs responds. :lol He must have been bored.

While the entire exchange was rather necessary, I really do believe that Jobs is slipping.

Yes, I know what happened, I am not commenting about their argument. Just thought it was funny anyone thought that "line" by Jobs was good. It's what idiots say when they can't win in a debate.

They both looked like douche's in that exchange honestly.

Here's my stance on Jobs: Personality wise, he comes off as a bit of a twit. But it doesn't change the fact that he knows what the hell he's doing.

Would you rather have a CEO who's a congenial, grinning idiot? Or a CEO that's an antisocial genius?

I love how those are the only options.

I'd rather have one that aided me in masturbating on the toilet.

So which apple PR rep gets to knock on steve jobs's office door and kindly ask him not to email strangers and talk about porn anymore?

How much time does jobs spend just running through his inbox at night? Is he an insomniac? Dude must be way less busy now that the ipad shipped.

Jobs doesn't need to send ANY MORE E-MAILS. period. he's not helping the company responding to honest concerns and questions with snide, snarky, pissy replies (which naturally get published online for the world to see).

Jobs clearly needs an assistant.

I don't support this "world free from porn", but I'm actually on Steve's side here.

Absolutely irresponsible position to take. It's not as if the device was released into the market and competition ensued. Both the seller of the phone and Gizmodo knew what they were doing was wrong. Do you think that Gizmodo would blow $5000+ on the device if they didn't really think it was genuine? The seller of the phone knew the owner of it and knew how to reach him through Facebook, LinkedIn or just sending it back to Apple. No sympathy for either group as both just thought they could make a quick buck, even if it was wrong.

As for Apple being "rich", they go that way by making the right moves in the market, engineering products people wanted, etc. All of the other mobile companies could build what they wanted, have huge engineering resources, etc. but Apple out maneuvered them. Competition happens when there are worthy competitors and, so far, no one has produced a product that has gained the traction of Apple's smartphones. Oh, wait. RIM has a bigger installed base.

Apple was ripped off, period. Both sides could have, at any time, done the right thing. Let me ask you this. How receptive/appreciative do you think Apple would have been if Gizmodo acquired the phone then immediately turned it over to them? Do you think they would ever have a problem getting another story or information from Apple again?

Shortsightedness and greed. And, Gizmodo outed the name of the Apple engineer who's only fault was an innocent mistake. Awful.

Have to side 100% with Apple on this one.

No, the iPad just broadened his ability to e-mail people anywhere, anytime.

I thought he did just fine and Tate came off as a whiny kid. Not great of Jobs to lob the Jeff Bell Grenade, but there are times when you want to call critics out on to the mat because, well, sometimes they need to be called out.

As for kicking in his co-worker's doors, the police did that because there is reason to believe that a crime was committed. What, Apple should not have protection, same as anyone? If his co-worker was stupid enough to do what he did, he has no one to blame but himself.

What happened in this whole debacle reminds me of that scene from The Dark Knight, when Coleman Reese visits Lucius Fox, and Fox says, "Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. And your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck." No one thought there was going to be any fallout? Huh.

This wonderful comment summarizes it pretty good, imo.

Steve Jobs still seems like a dick.

Steve: "So what if I come off as dickish? What've *you* done to change the world that gives you license to criticize me?"

Following people are allowed to criticize Jobs: Nobody.

Among people you might think would be allowed to criticize Jobs, here's why they can't:

Bill Gates: Windows is useless. The PC is over.
Linus Torvald: Haha. Exactly what's your market share again?
God: Who is this God? Even if he existed, what has he developed for computers? Nothing? Moving on.
Anyone not computer related: YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS ARE BUNK.

Steve Jobs is definitely getting a little bonkers, but I can't say I disagree with his "We're not forcing anyone to do anything" statements.

They walked around CES with universal remotes turning things off.

Gizmodo thought they’d be clever in that old hacker prankster way at CES. They took the TV-B-Gone clicker that will allow you to turn off a TV screen and basically shut down any screen they could find at CES. I think the laughs lasted about 10 seconds before the word got out. Can you imagine the folks responsible for those displays and the folks who supervise them trying to deal with the issue? This was decidedly not a cool thing to do, I don’t care who thought of the idea. Wonder what the Gizmodo folks would say if someone had figured out how to pull the plug on their coverage of the event?

And the CEA banned them.
We have been informed of inappropriate behavior on the show floor by a credentialed media attendee from the Web site Gizmodo, owned by Gawker Media. Specifically, the Gizmodo staffer interfered with the exhibitor booth operations of numerous companies, including disrupting at least one press event. The Gizmodo staffer violated the terms of CES media credentials and caused harm to CES exhibitors. This Gizmodo staffer has been identified and will be barred from attending any future CES events. Additional sanctions against Gizmodo and Gawker Media are under discussion.

First thing I thought about as well when I read that. Time for Tim Cook to slap some sense into Steve.
It doesn't matter. Sales are way up, they're going to ship 25 million 4th gen iPhones this year, the iPad is huge, and no one outside of tech blog circles cares about this stuff. If sales start to suffer, he'll shut himself up.

:lol I'm usually not a grammar nazi, but I found the juxtaposition pretty funny. You mean resort by the way.

And right to do so. Act like a 5 year old and you'll get treated like one. Forget the millions of dollars that companies pay to show at CES and to do what they did to that poor guy from Motorola, I believe it was, was just bullshit. Thinking back to that really makes me side with Apple even more.

Seriously?

What's next for Jobs? Is he going to threaten to confiscate the guy's liver?

Why? Guy acts like a jerk and Steve can't reply in kind?

I’m just commenting on principle, not on sales.

pfft real steve jobs acting like fake steve jobs is fine by me. I think GAF was the only group of people that blew Bell's comments out of proportion. Most of gaf (have/had) a superiority complex, and sandy

I think my original assessment of this situation rings still rings true.

Throw the book at Hogan.

Gizmodo should receive a slap on the wrist for buying stolen property.

Apple shouldn't be so dumb with their prototypes. Force GPS to remain on the phone at all times ffs.
