Hulu is a lot harder to justify than Netflix for me. I might pick it up for a month when the show is wholly available but that's about all I will watch on it.

Netflix has more steadily produced content which makes the monthly fee much more reasonable compared with one show.


Episode 8 gave me the feels. Season is really good, I am liking Alison more and more as the season goes by. Sam is really great actually and there seems to be some depth to all the characters. Under pressure was a strangly appropriate song for that moment.

I liked handmaiden way more than this overall but its different, and it's depressing and this is more fun to discuss. Really liked this too it's just different.

I wish more Netflix shows did 10 episodes instead of 13, that's a bit too much when Netflix shows constantly hit the 55 minute mark.

Man, it's weird. While watching the show, I liked it, but I didn't necessarily love it that much. Now that I'm done, I just want a Season 2 really badly...

I was worried the show would devolve into interpersonal squabbles within the cast after the Cherry and Melrose shit but they seemed to move on from that pretty quickly. Outside of Debbie and to a lesser extent Ruth who are in it for themselves, the women are in it together. The party for Sheila was kinda corny but it was still great to have them all come together like that. Even Bash subverts expectations of a rich idiot who only cares about himself to a dork who just really loves wrestling.

The only thing I'm not really a fan of is the way the show wants to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to the racial stereotyping stuff. It's unavoidable, it's a show about wrestling in the 80s but it's kinda annoying how they meekly acknowledge that yea it's fucked without doing much beyond that. I hope they are seeding some of that for season 2 with what happened to Arthie but even Cherry's problems were just glossed over this season pretty quickly.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this show, but after the opening credits of episode 1 and I was already all-in.

That neon-style animation with Scandal's The Warrior playing? Yeah, this show is gonna be alright.

Agreed. And with episodes sometimes hitting 35 minutes, they aren't much shorter than network hour longs minus commercials (usually 42 minutes).

I just finished it, and the series and episodes were the perfect length. Nothing was dragged out or lasted too long, and the show never overstayed its welcome.

Just absolutely wonderful and entertaining. It was both hilarious and touching throughout, and the whole build up to the finale was handled so well. It was a great love letter to all things great and terrible about wrestling, and also great to find a show with no real villain or antagonist trying to keep the characters down. It all felt real and organic, and that was wonderful.

I want more, but would also be happy with it ending where it has.

How is the wrestling in this show? I know in the grand scheme of things, it shouldn't matter, but on an authenticity level, how genuine is the work rate for the time that it's depicted?

The arc of the show is a bunch of amateurs learning to wrestle to be a part of the show, so it's what you'd expect given that.

it's done really well. i think they really have the actual act of wrestling the proper respect. it's shown to be a super difficult thing to do just the basics and they show how hard it is to be good

Well, how much exposing of the business tropes are present in this show? Does WWF and Georgia Championship Wrestling exist in this show? Didn't GLOW become a thing a few years into the WWF's expansion period? Do the ladies do that cheesy rap montage? And if so, are they done as comically bad in the show as they were in the version it's based on?

WWF exists in the show, yes. The rap montage
exists. And it might be even cheesier. A TV shot of Ric Flair is shown as well.

GLOW in real life never took itself seriously. Does this GLOW operate the same way, or do they try to function as a respectable indie promotion? And is there a Jackie Stallone in this show? Hell, is there a Big Bad Mama in this show as well? I'd love to see a re-enactment of the Married...With Children Las Vegas episode. They have to do that, or a fictionalized analog of that show. Which television actor do you think would be a dead ringer for a young Ed O'Neil?

I'd say there is a distinct transition. Minor spoils
They start off with the director wanting to make it a legit complex story-driven production but there is a point where events have him make the characters simpler and lean more on the camp.

It's a comedy show about making the show rather than the show itself. Don't go in with too many expectations. I'm starting to think you won't like it because you're already taking it way too seriously. It's not a documentary or a serious play on real events.

No. Not expecting a lot. Just curious. I saw a documentary on GLOW a few years ago and I loved it. Very heartbreaking story involving one of the samoan performers.

I know Jenji Kohan produces this show, so I know what to expect. I was just wondering how in-depth they would be with how a wrestling promotion works. A show about a wrestling promotion would be the best vehicle to do this, I feel.

I really like Marc Maron and have been a fan of his since his Morning Sedition days. so that's one of the draws for me. But still, I'd love to see them do a re-enactment of the behind-the-scenes making of the Married...With Children episode. GLOW was based in Vegas, am I correct? Thinking about it now, I wonder if they cast and crew of Married...With Children filmed that episode in Las Vegas in order to make that happen.

This show is weird and fun.

Also even though I can't stand him, Marc Maron is not so bad in this.

How awesome is this show?

Just finished with episode 10 and I really teared up during the epic finale.

The whole cast is awesome, the characters are really likeable, the development is great, the look and feel is great and the soundtrack is fucking dope as hell!
It's so hilariously over the top but at the same time so grounded and heartwarming and personal, that it's just a delight to watch.

This is one of the best, if not the best Netflix shows by far!


Also the 30min per episode runtime was perfect. Seriously hope Netflix picks it up for season 2.

PS: those who thought the season was short, you haven't seen Flaked season 2 :(

Damn Alison's costume on that final match. The final match is so wrassling

The 30 minute time and light hearted-ness really made this a breeze.

Fuck now I need to wait for season 2 😭

I gave up on the show because the premise was too ridiculous. I just couldn't get over women just accepting to being sex slaves and men being all right with it, only after a few years.

Not a fan of wrestling but thought this was great. It doesn't go too deep but Is still very touching. Also very entertaining, from start to finish.

The 30 minute length does wonders for pacing. Scripting is tight, nothing drags at all.

This year has made me realise that the half-hour format with a ten episode season may be my ideal TV format. Before this, my two favourite shows that I discovered this year fit this format.

The CW should use this for all their DC... no, for all their shows. They're just too long and feel like such a drag. 23 episodes at an hour each? Ouch...

I already read The Handmaid's Tale so I don't feel the need to rush out and sign up for Hulu. If I'm going to pay for an additional streaming service for a single show based on a book I already read it will be American Gods.

Great show. Great acting. There are so many levels of acting and acting to act in this show.
It's amazing. Brie is a natural in every way.

The rest of Netflix's slate does not, but most aren't quite used to the concept of this yet. Seems like the GLOW showrunners get it

I only have episode 10, the last one, left to watch now.

It's been a good show. Not a great show. It was funnier at the start. I don't like the Jenji Cohan style of making all the women best friends when it comes down to it. It feels kind of forced - there are moments when the women kind of pull together or even just hang out when they don't have to and I don't buy that some of these women would even like each other a little bit. It feels like it's written from the perspective of one type of woman, and they just kind of assume all women are really like that and they give everyone different aesthetics and ethnicities to cover up how samey the characters really are. The show can actually be pretty cloying - nowhere near as cloying as OITNB can be at times, but it's still there and it annoys me.

I wish the show was a bit more fun than it has been the past couple of episodes. Spoilers for ep 8:
Ruth getting pregnant and having an abortion didn't really do anything for mel. I just thought 'oh, okay we're doing that storyline now.'. I mean, it isn't fun, it isn't really interesting how they do it, just kind of boilerplate. I did at least appreciate that it was brief, she made her mind up quickly and we got a nice bonding scene between her and Sam. But it just felt a bit rote - this is a show about women so we better do an abortion storyline very fast. Also, Debbie's martial drama is boring. I don't give a fuck about her husband, I want to see the show get put together and the relationships between the women and the producers. I don't want long scenes where they try to 'make it work'. I feel like these two storylines came at the expense of the stuff I really liked about the first few episodes.

Those are just some complaints though. Overall I like the show and I like Marc Maron and Alison Brie's performances very much. They're holding it all together - Betty Gilpin is good too, but I feel like her character is stuck in a bit of a rut right now and hasn't been as well defined - maybe in season 2. In season 2, I'd also like a bit more focus on the actual making of the show and the motivations of the other women, most of them still feel like cartoon characters.

That's because the entire show is a lead up to the actual fake show. Now that you're invested in all the set up, you want the payoff that all the characters have been working so hard towards.

But yeah Season 2 can't come quick enough for me either, I don't even like fake wrestling.

some connection between Maron finding out about his daughter and taking Brie to the clinic. I was expecting that pregnancy storyline to carry over into the next season after the scene in the locker room but instead it was brought up in resolved in basically one episode.

The comradery between the girls will surely end in S2 once egos get hurt in the ring as the show grows in popularity.

Loving this show. I watched 7 episodes in the row and saved some for tonight.

Alison's character is adorable. Some bits got me laughed out loud (prank call scene for example).

I find it weird that the comradery thing is even a critique, given some of them clearly don't like each other.
