And while we're on the subject, could someone explain to me what makes Gmail so attractive? i'm talking about something beyond simply having a gig of storage, available pretty much anywhere. Is it being used for P2P? i see it as a big data mining project, cleverly cloaked in the in the guise of a web mail service with a huge storage capacity, all from the company that brought us our favorite search engine. Think advertisers, governments, or media groups (RIAA, MPAA, etc.) might like to know what people are uploading to their accounts? Think Google would like to profit handsomely for such information? i do!

In fact, this page sums up my feelings on it pretty well: http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/.

i'm not trying to hate on Gmail (i've never used it); i'm just trying to understand it's popularity, and warn some of you so quick to use it of it's possible downfalls.

Please point me to the other free mail services that offer excellent spam filtering, ability to create rules and 1GB of storage... I'll say they are great services too.

EDIT:

You know I took a look at the complaints on that page... and they simply don't apply to me:

1. Gmail is nearly immortal: Even deleted mail may stay on their system and a simple warrant would force them produce copies of my email...

Ok so what? I use my email to communicate with family and friends I don't say anything to them via email that I wouldn't say to their face. If it's that private I certainly don't email it to them.

2. Problem 2: Google's policies do not apply
"but nothing in any of Google's policies or public statements applies to those of us who don't have Gmail accounts"

Ok well then this one doesn't even apply to this conversation because we are talking about people who have gmail accounts.

Problem 3: A massive potential for abuse
oogle could grow a database that spits out the email addresses of those who used those keywords. How about words such as "box cutters" in the same email as "airline schedules"?

Yes and I own 2 guns... that means someday I might shoot someone... also see my reply to #1.... ie. paranoia.

Problem 4: Inappropriate ad matching
Yahoo doesn't even get it's ad matching right... so I'm still not seeing the problem here...

Just as a sort of note: if you aren't running Firefox 0.9.3, trying to use this plugin may lock up your browser. I learned it the hard way, with 0.9.0.

cool, even more reason to not use my hotmail account anymore. the switch from hotmail to gmail will be slow going, but one day I hope to never go there again.
