The video discusses "Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain," highlighting its mix of engaging gameplay, character developments, and the narrative's complexity. The review reflects on the game mechanics, world-building, and storytelling elements, comparing it to previous titles in the series. It ultimately praises the open-world mechanics and depth but critiques the narrative cohesion and mission structure, indicating that it doesn't always feel like a true Metal Gear Solid game.

Legacy of Metal Gear Solid

The video opens by acknowledging the long-standing impact of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, particularly 'Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.' After its 2015 release, the reviewer hadn't revisited the game until preparing for upcoming new releases in the franchise.

Game Mechanics and Gameplay

Gameplay in MGS5 is praised for its sandbox-style freedom, offering various strategies for mission completion that build upon mechanics from previous entries. The review highlights daytime versus nighttime missions and the versatility of equipment, including Snake's prosthetic arm.

Narrative Structure

The video discusses the narrative approach of MGS5, emphasizing the fragmented storytelling and lack of traditional cutscenes that define prior installments. This has led to a perception that MGS5 sometimes feels more like an open-world military sim than a true narrative adventure.

Visuals and Aesthetics

The graphics of MGS5 are noted as being average for 2015, falling short compared to contemporaries and earlier entries in the series. However, the environments are described as expansive with a decent draw distance.

Character Development and Relationships

The reviewer examines character arcs, particularly focusing on Quiet and the transformation of Snake into a legend. Themes of moral ambiguity are highlighted, especially as players navigate choices impacting the game world.

Mission Design and Repetitiveness

While some missions provide emotional weight and intensity, the review points out a concerning use of filler content in Chapter 2, where many missions feel like repeats with added conditions, diluting the overall experience.

Conclusion about the Series

Ultimately, the reviewer appreciates the evolution of the Metal Gear Solid series but suggests MGS5 may not reach the narrative heights of previous entries. Despite its flaws, it acknowledges the game's ability to offer an immersive experience and reflects on its standing in gaming history.

It definitely is....at least for me. But i am a bit biased here. I am huge open world fan and l like mil sims and I never played any of the other MGS titles before or afterwards. So yep, this game was made for me. MGSV offered so many cool, little unique details for an open world game....it was mind blowing. Every Ubisoft open world game is a complete joke against this game....till today. If it hadnt been the Witcher3 year, it would have been my GOTY in 2015.

One of my favorites. It's a shame the story wasn't fully fleshed out as it's pretty clear they cut a few missions / story beats from the final game and never released a DLC to address things.

Regarding the story: MGSV walked so TLOU2 could run. MGSV was the first big AAA game to have a tragedy for a story and be shunned by its fanbase for not delivering the feel good ending everyone wanted.

Games can have tragedies for stories. Despite players not being mature enough to appreciate them.

I agree with some of his opinion, but GTFO with "parasites are more believable" than Cyborg Raiden in MGS4. Kojima made him as badass as it gets in that game.
Also i'm a little tired of MGS4's cutscenes bashing. Yes, some like with Johnny/Meryl or in the Nomad are tedious to watch but others are the best in the whole saga. That Middle East sequence alone is epic.

MGSV gameplay wise is indeed a masterpiece, the fluidity achieved was incredible. Grinding aspects not so much. Graphics and presentation were great.

As for the story is a train wreck. Forgettable bosses, characters like Skull Face trashly used. Cut content.
Retcons like Volgin and obviously Venom. First i disagree that playing with Raiden or Big Boss is the same thing as playing with a doppelganger, a nobody like Venom.
And second it makes some of the sequels plot things like Les Enfants Terribles project completely meaningless.

I felt nothing killing those Motherbase soldiers. The only aspect i like about the story is that explores the enormous psychological pain and destruction War provokes.

Best open world stealth game i played, but action part was just ok and it was terrible as a mgs game.

KId liquid can make me forget all the other bullshits.

The game should have been all like the demo prologue.

Metal Gear Solid V is a masterpiece and literally a perfect videogame AS IS.

It is also the best narrative in the series since Metal Gear Solid 2.

And the true Game of the Year 2015, sorry Bloodborne sisters and fuck you Witcher 3.

MGS4 has the best stealth gameplay in the series. If MGSV had that depth, proper boss battles without health regen, and the ending intact, it would be in the running for the best video game of all time for me. TBH It would have been better as a collection of Ground Zeroes style levels.

But yes, IMO it's still a masterpiece. Even if it's not perfect.

The game was a blast to play. Big boss MGS games always get more points due to no Otacon, however MGS5 loses points due to Huey Emmerich.

…And I always have to be careful watching any Eggmanlives video. They are absolutely not spoiler free.

had to log in to drop this mf knawledge.

if a mf say this aint no masterpiece, boy has no clue. this is the goat MGS game and I only learned about this after diving deep into the lore. Game is full, absolutely full of indirect storytelling and full of theories to interpret the messages.

Its similar to MGS2 in a sense. Replaying this right now. Amazing game, needed a 4k60fps patch though. It's currently at 1440p 60 on PS5

I thought the gameplay and ability to just roam around the world was a lot of fun. I did prefer the Afghanistan area to Africa. But overall the game was a great experience.

Couldn't make it past the first mission. Tried 3 times over 3 separate attempts. Controls were and always will be ass backwards.

Read the story synopsis online.

Enjoyed The Quiet online, many times. I've probably watched The Quiet content more than anyone here, much more. Maybe 100 hours of it and I can't get enough.

I don't feel I missed anything.

That said, I'm also the dude that fucking HATED MGS2 for not having snake and TLOU2 for not having Ellie finish off Abby at the end, so sniff a fresh fart, grab your favorite boxed wine and bring your pitchforks, artlovers.

I hope you don't mean the hospital part. That is completely different from rest of the game. MGSV has the easiest controls of any MGS. They are almost too simple.

Great gameplay story was horrible

Agreed on the first part, the story wasn't horrible but it was delivered poorly. Leaving most of the narrative to be distilled via optional radio tapes is such a non-Kojima thing. You can tell he was forced onto decisions like that, hence he doubled down on absurd cut-scene lengths for his next game.

Great game that I unfortunately didn't finish.

I'm wanting to get back to it at some point. Is there a go to list of mods to get rid of all the silly time requirements to upgrade aspects of your Army and base? That was the one thing in the game that kinda killed it for me. Well, that and how silencers degraded far too quickly. I found a good mod to get rid of the time shit years and years ago, but I'm certain that the games been updated since and that there's probably a more up to date mod for the purpose now anyway. In about a year, I'm gonna have a lot more time opening up to me, so I think I'll wanna give it another go, but only with the mods. I think the games design is fundamentally flawed due to the time requirements, but considering that's my only real beef with the design that's not too bad.

I guess I see MGS5 the same way I see resident evil 4 , final fantasy XVI and so on ... games that borrowed the famous names and marketing rights, and set out to do something entirely different. Well, and I hate them all ... they might be good ? Even great games on their own ? Sure we can debate this ... but they are not what they were supposed to be IMHO.

Isn't this the guy who said Starfield was a phenomenal achievement, and then turned the comments off said video once it became apparent in the days after launch that it in fact wasn't?
LMAO yes it is.

He also had an episode on Twitter where he took issue with people killing people in GTA games. A user shared a clip of the GTA IV hospital location and GMan replied to it stating "dude should be on a fucking watch list".

If Phantom Pain had:

  • Ground Zeroes incorporated into MGS5 like the Tanker chapter in MGS2
  • The original songs that were cut composed by Harry Gregson-Williams
  • Memorable Boss fights
  • Eli (young Liquid) and young Psycho Mantis being more relevant to the story
  • Lore wasn't all on cassette tapes
  • Philosophical themes of Child Soldiers in a war (probably toned down for being too controversial)
  • Act 3
  • Operation Intrude N313 ending scene as the final epilogue being a playable game like Ground Zeroes (remake of Metal Gear MSX)
We would be calling it a genuine Masterpiece instead of Medic Gear Solid.

Yeah, no, not even remotely close. MGS1, MSG2, and MGS3 are masterpieces. MGSV is fine, but it's riddled with issues with AI bugs and unpolished gameplay and cutscenes. Not to mention the story is a complete disaster. The game design is fantastic though, which I will admit is some of the best stealth gameplay you can get. But, masterpiece? No. Not on your life.

Its my favorite MGS game by far when it comes to gameplay, but probably the worse when it comes to story. Overall is still my favorite MGS game, spent 500h on the game and platinumed it.

Nowhere NEAR being the pinnacle of the franchise, you get all the freedom you want at the price of a tight narrative/engaging world to dive into, if we were to look at it from an action adventure perspective even Uncharted was more engrossing..Also consider that certain key members of what made Metal Gear 1-4 all great weren't present in the making of 5 tells you how the quality dropped.....even Peacewalker is better than MGS5

Gameplay wise the very best in the series by a country mile, and it's not even close. Solid game.

The drawbacks are the storytelling being lackluster and unfinished, and the open-world being fairly barren with content repeating the same areas. I think the world could've been smaller, and better for it.
