GOG | June 2014 - Creating a DRM-free utopia since 2008

LOL yea I think that's a typo.

However, I would not be surprised if GOG were somehow combining their Linux support launch with a client launch. Maybe not a GOGos, but something similar.

Nextstep. Hmm, that's a rather obscure reference to throw in, assuming it was intentional.
Wonder if they're planning to expand to platforms beyond DOS/Windows now.

"In the 1990s the pioneering games Doom (with its level or WAD editor), Doom II and Quake (with its respective level editor) were developed by id Software on NeXT machines. Other games based on the Doom engine such as Heretic and its sequel Hexen by Raven Software as well as Strife by Rogue Entertainment were also developed on NeXT hardware using id's tools."

Behind Iron Gate, Gloom, Fears, Breathless and Alien Breed 3D next?

Good news, but I remember picking up the DRM-free iD mega-pack bundle for around $20 of like 20 of their games ~6 years ago off Steam :p

Screw it - I'm going to say that today's announcement will also reveal the forthcoming addition of LucasArts titles to the catalog!

A person can dream...

With the picture of a nebula and a comment about "to infinity and beyond", I'm thinking something with spacy relevance. I *guess* cloud storage might just about fit the theming of the hints (if they are indeed intended as hints).

Then again, "To infinity and beyond" is, well, Disney. But GoG have a bit of a habit of giving clues that obviously hint at one thing but actually hint at something a little more subtle.

If we completely disregard them as hints, the unified client makes a lot of sense, but I don't think it fits at all with the teasers.

My crazy suggestion: GoG Virtual Machine. One unified client which not only handles downloading and integration but also acts as an interface - and emulator, in so far as that may be required - for non-native content.

Also available on Wii U. Just for the hell of it.

I still think the announcement is primarily for a client, but that image of the cosmos and tease about a "galaxy of possibilities" have me thinking, "What if...?"

Plus, there hasn't been a release today (yet), which usually would have been announced 5 hours ago. Sometimes releases coincide with Steam's schedule if it's for new/indie games, though.

But I will irrationally get my hopes up that the announcement might include a game-related one, possibly kicking off with a release later today.

I don't think that's irrational in the slightest. I'm absolutely certain we will have at least one release, and presumably one that's high-profile enough to fit with this event. Probably an indie or recent title, since they did a classic on Tuesday.

There's some speculation since Divinity Original Sin hasn't shown up at GOG for pre-order yet, they may talk about it during the non-Witcher 3 part of the conference, and showcase that (which in a way would be weird, since Steam's version will be better having achievements, social aspects, the workshop for mods, and also be DRM-free, while GOG's will not have much aside from the DRM-free aspect that is also present with the Steam copy. Unless....) I do think we'll see whatever GOG releases for purchase/pre-order on their site at the end of the conference, as we're overdue for something in this week else now.

I also am starting to think whatever it is will probably be underwhelming, but that's just me being pessimistic.

It's worth bearing in mind that this is for The Witcher 3 primarily; and, for that matter, it's been pitched as being GoG unveiling their upcoming new project, so I suspect they won't be going live with whatever they're working on straight away; in other words, I agree, and it's probably best to moderate your anticipation for now.

I guess the irrational part is hoping it's LucasArts related.

I don't think they've teased LA, but those hints about the announcement (cosmos, 'galaxy') could be (mis)interpreted by some as relating to Star Wars or LA. Then again, GOG probably knows that teasing LucasArts without anything rock solid would drive people mad, but again I don't think they've teased it.

The ideal outcome would be that the teases were multifaceted - for a client and a new publisher.

I really like the GOG VM idea, though, and had thought of something similar before. It's kind of like a Wine wrapper for GOG games. And since we know Linux is coming, maybe this client will launch on Linux. Not quite a GOG OS, but a GOG VM. I think that would be fantastic. Plus, it's my understanding that Wine can run Win 3.1 / 95 / 98 games, so that would resolve the compatibility issues of various older titles. Instead of tinkering with them to run on modern systems, we run them in a virtual native environment.

When I consider the above, Linux does seem like a great endeavor for GOG. Unified client/VM, ability to run older games, etc.

Now I'm definitely hyped! :p

Galaxy for star wars, lucasarts, and infinity and beyond for Disney, who owns LucasArts.

Another option for a game-related tie-in with the teases is Homeworld. That was recently confirmed for some kind of digital release months ago, right?

I'm trying to keep expectations low in case its underwhelming, but not having a release yet today has me thinking this is going to lead to some kind of debut from a publisher on GOG.

I don't need the usual id games on GOG, but Hexen II and, to an extent, Quake deserve better releases than the ones Bethesda's put out on Steam. Shit, even the GameFly sale going on right now has Quake II mission packs on discount, but not the Quake mission packs I'd buy!

"Nextstep" is either a long-shot license with Bethesda or a typo, lol.

They're really hammering in that this is an optional client. But I'll definitely use it. The main reason I would want to buy a game on Steam instead of GOG is the easy updating and multiplayer. Sounds great.

Guess GOG didn't drop Fair Pricing totally:

Is the event over? I'm still holding out hope for a new publisher arriving or (be still my heart) support of retro platforms via emulators (that'll never happen). Love what I've seen of the event so far, though, excited about Galaxy.

When they sign one of their white-whale big publishers they won't wait to tell everyone, they'll do a big announcement off-cycle. I still think LucasArts is going to happen (eventually, anyway) but I didn't expect it to happen all convenient-like for E3.
