And yes, having SShock1 too would be nice. But as many have said, it's not necessary to get into SShock2 and it was pretty experimental for its time. I recommend watching or reading a plot summary.

The UI is a mess by modern standards, only play it to see what they tried to do back in the day, it is quite an achievement.

SShock2 still holds up quite well! And if they are talking about premium price/features, could they have gotten the HighRes Texture/models guys in on it and revamp the game visually too?

Does anyone know how these things work with IP rights etc? Last I heard, the IP was owned by Meadowbrook Insurance Group, but the name was still owned by EA. Maybe there's a small chance it's out of limbo (which I never thought would happen)?

ss2 is a game i bought around release but never finished because id end up putting all of my free time into quake. i went back to install it years ago only to find the disc had somehow managed to crack and wouldnt install. anyway id be on board for buying this where ever it drops.

anyone ever play through this coop?(i think they patched that in eventually)is it worth it or does it take away from the experience?

Oh man... this weekend i spend time in the Killzone 4 thread and got all hyped up about KZ2 again, so i reloaded it and played for a few hours... NOW i've got this thread reminding me of the single greatest game ever made... might need to get SS2 up and running again. It's been a few years since my last playthrough.

"Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine? "

"What is a drop of rain, compared to the storm? What is a thought, compared to the mind? Our unity is full of wonder which your tiny individualism cannot even conceive. "

Sooooo GOOD

I played the first System Shock a few years back (with the mouselook mod, naturally) and thought it was actually pretty neat. I'd definitely be down for playing 2 if they can get the rights situation sorted.

This is the thing we don't know jack about. But an announcement like this from a new company would suggest these guys founded a company, bought the IP of SShock and will publish the games on their own.

Would make sense since i'm confident they will recoup the costs of buying the license by selling this thing on Steam for 10-20$

Definitely. There is a whole generation of gamers who've never heard of SS2. A release on steam would spread like wildfire.

Next step, Oculus Rift support.

Then bring on the System Shock 3 kickstarter. Ken Levine, Terry & Eric Brosius reprise their roles. PC only.

i feel really bad for saying this but i never (fully) played plansecape torment or fallout 1. With the recent re-release of baldurs gate (and having a lot of fun with that) i want to complete these games, so i got them on GoG.

What do you advice me to start with? Planescape or Fallout?

Planescape is like reading an engrossing book where you are the protagonist. You are completely free to choose how your character will react to and interact with other characters. The story is brilliant for a video game, expertly told and writen and keeps you hooked the whole way through. Fallout is a classic as well, with a similar amount of freedom of choice, but the focus is on gameplay rather than story. I'd say start with PS:T, it was much more enjoyable for me than Fallout (although I certainly liked that game as well).

All that System Shock 2 needs is the fan made 2.4 patch here: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085

The patch is pretty fucking flawless as far as I can tell and it seems to have fixed all the compatibility issues I had in the past. Has GOG updated their installers to have the similar Thief patches or are they still just using the severely out of date DSfix?
What does the steam versions have? They are probably closer to that. I have the theif trilogy on steam so I need to be educated about them.

Thief was the exact same setup on both Steam and GOG last I checked, right down the the DSfix version. Both are vastly improved by the recent community patches. This means that Square Eidos probably provided them with the game that way.

Aren't Steam versions usually just the game sort of thrown out there, compatibility be damned? I know I have a few that don't work in Windows 7 or 8 at all. And I don't think Bloodlines works at all on my PC unless I fan patch it. Although they do sell XCOM as a DOSBox version, so maybe if the publisher gives the Steam version some love, it would compare to the GOG one.
No, the Steam versions of these games are literally the exact same folder that is installed by GOG. The only thing unique about the GOG version of Thief say, is the GOG written installer and the bonus content on the GOG website. Both versions are out of date as far as community fixes go. The Steam version has no DRM either and you can literally copy and paste the folder to another computer and just play from there.

I have more nostalgia toward the first game(have one of the music from the first levels playing in my head right now), but playing SS2 again would be pretty nice.

I've barely played Fallout but Planescspe is one of the best games ever made. Riveting storytelling.

For old games, stick with GOG

Bloodlines, I took it from dotemu, completely patched and Win 7 compatible too.

So, nobody knows if Zafehouse: Diaries is any good? I like the premise but I wonder if it's an actually tactical game or something much more randomized where it basically decides if the choice you make is a good one after you make it based on probabilities if you know what I mean. I don't like such systems even if in practice it shouldn't feel very dissimilar to having the world pre-populated with enemies and hazards, I simply can see through the system and lose any immersion that way.

It only has 2 gog reviews but it's not like I can trust those when only some really hated games like Daikatana don't get praise.

Yeah sadly it seems that when a new game is released on GOG, the people who played and loved it when they were 5-10 years old write a glowing 5/5 review about how much it changed their lives... 20 years ago.

Well, this is a newer game apparently but the same happens with those too. Fans rush to review.

Well that didn't take long, 22 hour countdown on the main site! Next stop, find a way to convince LucasArts to get their back catalog on GOG.

Edit: Surprised to see TIE Fighter below X-Wing on the requested games list, I remember enjoying TIE Fighter a lot more. Well, it's not like we'd get one without the other, so it doesn't matter too much.

I suspect it might simply be some selecting "X-Wing" to mean "X-Wing series"

Is it possible there's a split between TIE Fighter and Star Wars TIE Fighter? On phone so can't check

Also, in regards to the earlier speculation about the price of SS2, the above RPS article confirms a normal $9.99 price along with the extras:

RPS: Will there be any extras included with the GOG download? Soundtracks and the like?

Rambourg: Yes, indeed. With the help of Stephen, we’ve pulled out all of the stops to make this a virtual collector’s edition. In addition to the soundtrack, the GOG.com version of the game will have concept art, maps of the Von Braun, a interview with Ken Levine, the first pitch document, and much more.

Kick: It’s going to be a fantastic archive of System Shock 2 assets.

...

System Shock 2 will be available at GOG.com tomorrow from 11:00 AM GMT, for $9.99.

Edit:

Hmm, loaded down to the 3-digit range and only other mentions of "tie" are in Star Wars: X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter (7700) / Star Wars: X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter: Balance Of Power Campaigns (2360). I'll have to go with mclem's guess even though they're clearly distinguished.

Excellent. Looking forward to run through von Braun's corridors while panting and sweating like the pathetic creature of meat and bone that I am.

Wait $10, wow.
OK I don't know jack shit about System Shock 2, but what makes it stand out? How is its gameplay?

Bunch of imbalances, to be expected in an open system. Typical old-school RPG feel where you start as a mook and grow to be a force to be reckoned with, i.e. great sense of power progression.

I can't remember the last time a game made me feel like that...
One image on wikipedia showed the inventroy which reminded me of RE, rather interested in getting it, to also support gog.

You know stuff like System Shock 2, of which I have no past connection with but learned on this board of all the complexities behind ownership of the license, coming to GoG really makes me appreciate companies going to the extra mile(s) to make these games available.

Thank you GoG!!!

Will pick up this weekend and journey down these scary corridors for the first time.

So do we know what mods will or will not work with this release? And what must haves there are? Like that 2.4 listed up above if it will work? I would like to get the game, get the mods and just hit the ground running.

The interview said they're keeping it compatible with existing mods. We don't know more than that.

Well, I'll be double dipping on this one, even if the cd version isnt too much a pain to get running. Mainly for the extras, but hearing Shodan again will be worth it.
Hopefully SS1 will come along eventually too when this explodes.

Based off the interview this was dropped into GOG's lap.

Yeah, they got lucky, but at least GOG does make it a point to go after and promote such games (they frequently comment on matters in meetings/etc).

I much prefer the requested games list at GOG over what we got with Greenlight. I think GOG definitely deserves credit for pursuing interest in classic PC games that might not be a good fit on other services, where as Steam kinda just has the reputation of being that service that everyone has and prefers, so if it's big enough then it should be there by default, especially if GOG or someone else goes through the trouble of updating the game for better compatibility.

Edit: I don't know how loosely this is to be taken (probably very), but:

He had heard of GOG and our popular community wish list–which allows our users to request games and site features they want to see on GOG–and the fact that over 34,000 users had voted that they wanted to see SS2 released on GOG made Stephen wanna join forces with us to make the release happen.

It does make it sound a little like it wouldn't have necessarily happened without having a service like GOG to organize its member's voices in to such a format of requested games.

I think the most wanted game I want from GOG now is Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. That's one of my favorite NFS games, and since EA has a presence on GOG, and since the 20th anniversary of the Need for Speed franchise is next year, what better time than now to get the classics up there?

I believe I have all these games already.
...Might need to check my Steam account for Runaway 3 tho.
Will grab System Shock 2 when I get back home later tonight.
