Hey GAF -

Since you guys are so great at providing useful info when any of these travel threads pop up, I thought I'd ask for some help regarding my trip in two and a half weeks to LA.

Taking the wife, we're both 30, and this will be our first time in LA.

We're there from March 10-15, and will be staying in West Hollywood.

Things we like: Food, Sports, Entertainment, Anything that requires us to be active
What I have planned so far: Not much, I just booked yesterday. We're going to the Clippers-Grizzlies game that week for sure, other than that there are no concrete plans.

Was looking at possibly doing a hike up near the Hollywood sign, visit some museums, do some shopping, and lots of beach action.

Looking forward to reading your responses, GAF. Thx

In n Out

Kogi food truck

they made me happy to make that trip for a week

edit: also take a real star tour. It allows to see a lot and bring quarters

Go to the Grove on Fairfax, its a nice outdoor mall. Close to West Hollywood.
Maybe Century City Mall too. Visit Beverly Hills. Have dinner in and around West Hollywood.

Enjoy the Sun, the friendly people, the beautiful smiles.

You guys should go to the Getty Center:

Go hiking in Topanga Canyon or Malibu.

LA Natural History Museum has a great dinosaur exhibit right now. Across from that is the space shuttle Endeavor at the Science Center.

Visit a giant fucking mall and get annoyed at Hollywood/Highland if you want to see the stars on the sidewalk.

Walk the Santa Monica Pier for a great ocean breeze.

Stare at hipsters in Silverlake.

WTF? Are you a tour guide for a living?

Good suggestions. The Silverlake one made me laugh.

I just went back in November for the first time.

Really liked Santa Monica. Griffith Observatory is worth visiting too.

I thought Hollywood Blvd was pretty boring and a huge waste of time. I would not pay for more than 1 hour of parking there.

You're staying in Hollywood? LOL don't expect much. You'll like it for half an hour.

LA is pretty cool, it just takes forever to get anywhere.

Go to Moonshadows in Malibu on a Friday night to have drinks, and be whisked away by the tide rolling in underneath the restaurant. Its such an intimate spot.

Have dinner there if you can.

Be wary of long smiles and beautiful city scenery.

Go to Kate Mantilini Restaurant in Beverly Hills. They filmed Heat there. The scene between Pacino and Deniro.

They're staying in West Hollywood which is different than Hollywood.

WeHo = gay people and some good bars
Hollywood = tourists and crime rates

Cool thread, I'll be in LA March 20-25 for the first time ever. Definitely going to the Griffith Observatory, don't have much else planned yet.

Go for some of these hikes:

Malibu Canyon State Park
Escondido Falls Hike
Runyon Canyon Hike (more of a hot spot of trendy exercise)
Hollywood Sign Hike
Griffith Observatory Hike

Sports? Lakers / Clippers / Kings should all have home games if you want to see Staples.

Fun areas to hang:

Venice / Santa Monica / Third Street Promenade / Pier
West Hollywood/Hollywood
Walk of Fame

Places to see:
Getty Center
Griffith Observatory
LACMA
La Brea Tar Pits etc.

Beaches:
Malibu is great. Head out to Zuma or whatever there. That said, be warned we have a marine layer in the morning that sometimes makes the beach dreary and cold until it burns off.
Balboa Island down in OC can be fun, you can rent peddle boats and get a frozen banana etc

Honestly man go to Starbucks in Brentwood on Montana Ave. I have seen more stars there than anywhere else.

Try My fathers Office while you are there. Or try Umami burger in Fred Seagals in Santa Monica.

Ye old Kings Head. Love that place.

Well, what are you into?

Art, culture, music... Non-mainstream stuff. Girlfriend really wants to go back to the museum of Jurassic Technology so I guess I'll put that on the list.

I also like good food/Michelin stars.

Right next to LACMA and the Tar Pits is the Petersen Auto Museum, which has just started doing tours of its previously closed-to-the-public vault. You have to book in advance on their website, but there is amazing stuff in there if you like old/classic/exotic cars.

Go to Hurry Curry of Tokyo on Sawtelle Blvd. north of Olympic Blvd. for the best goddamn Japanese curry you ever will have on this side of the planet.

Is West Hollywood not ideal to stay? I figured it was pretty central to everything.

Alternative was to stay in Santa Monica.

WeHo is fine as long as you're not a homophobe. There are some cool bars and live music venues around that way.

Santa Monica is the beach.

Just don't stay in Hollywood itself (different from WeHo). Hollywood is annoying.

Why would no one recommend any theme parks? Or did I miss this. Universal Studios or Disneyalnd. Who cares if you got no kids, enjoy the rides!

Gotcha. I have been through there and it seems like a nicer area. As an outsider, I'd probably rather stay at Santa Monica or one of the other beach towns.

While the beach cities are nice, you're adding 30-40 minutes to every single trip to almost any destination by staying that far out.

The Museum of Death is a nice, morbid one hour stop in Hollywood.

Is it actually good? Some Japanese dudes I know told me it sucks.
