So far we plan to see Alcatraz, a giant's game, go to the redwood forest, rent some scooters and drive along the coast. My friend bought me the ticket to go there, so I just have to worry about money for fun. I figure 1000 bucks for a 5 day week should be adequate ?!

Restaurant suggestions and other such things would be cool

Go see the seals at the waters edge. Ride the old style street cars. Drive down that steep twisty road you've seen in all the movies.

San Francisco? Well, once you are there, you could try to awaken your pansexual identity and then go take selfies with a homeless guy at one of the endless homeless tent cities they have. :p

off the top of my head:

go up Twin Peaks for a view of the city

walk the Golden Gate Bridge, maybe all the way to the observation area across the Bay to look back to the city

visit Alcatraz

visit the Painted Ladies houses

not sure if they still allow tours right now, but if they do, visit the US Mint

Cable Car Museum

ride the Cable Car all the way from the Market Street turntable to the end of Fisherman's Wharf

walk up Lombard Street to see the famous hairpin turns (one of the Cable Car lines actually has a stop on the top of Lombard, so you can get off there instead and then walk down instead of climb up, making it easier)

Palace of Fine Art

Cliff House/Sutro Baths

Coit Tower

check out Saint Mary's Cathedral. when they allow entry, the inside is great for photo

take a boat tour of the bay. Blue and Gold on Pier 39 or Red and White on Pier 43 are both good

if you're at Pier 39, check out the sea lions that's sun bathing just off the pier

and if you're into that sorta things, go check out the SF City Hall. not sure if they allow visits inside at the moment but it's very beautiful and perfect for photos, seeing it's the most expensive city hall in the US

the Dragon's Gate at one end of China Town

food wise, there's also a lot of choices

Swan Oyster Depot

Tony's Pizza Napoletana

Hot Sauce and Panko To Go

Li Po Cocktail Lounge

Yee's Restaurant

Panchita's Restaurant

Boudin Cafe over at Fisherman's Wharf (pretty sure they have stores at both Pier 39 and 43

outside of these, your friend probably knows a lot more good eats.

This is a good list but I would add Golden Gate park. Also, be careful on the scooters as people in the Bay drive like Mr. Fucking Magoo. They dont see you if you are in a car, let alone a tiny scooter.

I live in the bay area, so maybe i have built a tolerance for all the touristy things, but I'd just say explore, eat, check out the water and the restaurants.

Maybe that's just how I vacation though. The idea or chasing down all the tourist-traps is sort of exhausting to me. I like to try and just get lost in the atmosphere. But I could see that sounding uneventful to others.

for real, I'm from LA and I can say with confidence that SF drivers are worse. and to make things even more troublesome, the pedestrians are just as bad. running out on the road and crossing streets like cars are nothing.

Remember than even in summer, San Francisco and especially Alcatraz can be chilly.

this too. bring a jacket just in case.

I agree that for vacation one should just relaxed and all, but thing is, OP is visiting a friend in a place he/she had not been before. it's not really a vacation and more of a sightseeing trip from the sound of it.

I was born and raised in SoCal and lived in the bay for about 5 years.

There is no contest that Socal drivers are better. They drive like maniacs, but they all drive pretty fast and generally see you. In the bay, you have people driving 90mph and others driving 40 on the freeway...and neither of those two extremes see anything. Not other cars. not pedestrians. not motorcycles. nothing. If its beyond the first 5 feet past the hood directly out of the front windshield, they simply do not see shit.

I would check out sausalito if the weather is clear. Would also check out the Van Gogh immersive experience if you can get tickets. Academy of science is worth checking out if you can fit it in your budget.
