It's one thing to say that the Bible has been incredibly influential to the development of various aspects of Western culture over the past two thousand years...

Aliens that shoot fireballs are far more realistic than most stuff in the Bible.

Everything in the Buu saga and afterwards aside, Goku is actually not a bad role model. He doesn't take anything for granted, doesn't fret over the little stuff, looks at everything from the most normal grain of rice to a distant mysterious planet with wonder, and is always there for his family and friends (except when he's dead or lost in outer space) It's also important to consider that Goku was loosely based off of the Monkey King, a fictional character meant to represent Buddhism.

And then there's the whole parallel about his Son saving the world.

I'm not trying to make out Dragonball to be deeper than it is, but there are way worse "good guy" characters written out there. Goku does it while still managing to be cool.

EDIT: And I'm including the original Dragonball too. He can even use the flying nimbus only because he's pure of heart.
