Vijay Singh finally surpassed Tiger in the rankings after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship. Tiger held the top spot for 264 weeks. I for one, am elated by this news. I've been waiting for it to happen for a while actually. I never liked Tiger. He always struck me as kind of arrogant and his behavior on the green was really childish (basically throwing temper tantrums every time something didn't go his way). Singh is just a really great player. A consumate professional. I had a brief encounter with him years ago at the Kemper Open and he was just such a great guy... at least that's how he came off to me. Hopefully he will now receive the recognition he deserves. I don't expect him to reach Tiger's level of fame because Tiger is more marketable but it would be nice.

Want to know why he said that? People are playing in these tours to make a living. When she plays in a mens tour that basically means that she bumps a guy out. Why is that a problem? Because there are men's tours and women's tours. Why should she get to double dip and compete in both? Not only that, but she didn't even earn the right to compete. She got a sponser's exemption. If she wanted to play she should have qualified like everyone else.

Uh, Annika played from the same tees as the men.
Annika will play from the same tees as the male players and will likely have about a 20- to 30-yard disadvantage on the non-par-3 holes.

I agree with you on everything except for one. She got a sponsor's exemption as you mentioned. She didn't take anyone's job that week, of course if she made the cut it's theoretically possible that she could have. One person almost never can have an affect on the cut line however, only if there is say one person at 1 over and he gets in/gets bounced. I don't know that the cut line has ever rested on one person though, it's hard to explain.

What's easy though is that with the sponser's exemption she didn't take a spot from anyone. Sponsers want to make money, anything that can draw attention to a tournament allows for more money for everyone, so potentially she gave more exposure to players in that tourney.

That said, she should keep her ass on the LPGA at least until she can play from the men's tees. Michelle Wie anyone? :D

Vijay Singh is a dick, fuck him. Tiger is cocky and arrogant on the field at times, but he's earned that right.

Personally, I'd love to see the ghost of Stuart Payne crash a ghost plane into both of them.

Did you even read that paragraph?

I did; he edited it, and then I edited mine to include the quote from hookedongolf, thus quoting the new edited not-wrong (well, factually at least) version. Nice try, though, Mr. Super-Perceptive. Please Play Again.

On a related note, is there anything funnier on GA than someone coming in with a cute little one-liner and being totally fucking wrong?

:lol :lol :lol Ah, can't wait till Bish hits this thread...

I like Tiger and Vijay myself. I was hoping Tiger could stay on top for another year or two, but Vijay's been without question the best player the last couple years and deserves the #1 ranking. Either way, it's just another coloured man for the rest of the whitewashed tour to chase. :lol

I'm glad Vijay got the #1 ranking. It's obvious Tiger hasn't been the best golfer on tour for at least the past two years. I wonder how far back they keep the statistics that apply to the rankings for Tiger to have stayed number one during his long 'drought'. I can't remember the last time Tiger won a tournament, let alone a major.

Vijay is a machine. It was like a kidney punch on 17 when Tiger's second shot was closer to the pin than Vijays, but Vijay instead of just playing for par drilled the long birdie put and Tiger missed his. Tiger had a shot to be down only one stroke going into 18 but Vijay put the screws to his ass, and Tiger couldn't put under pressure (he had admittedly been a smidge left or right on the greens all day).

To Woods' credit, he went down like a man, and was completely gracious. He was not the least bit ashamed; in fact he was (rightfully) proud of his accomplishment and the great run he had. It's also great for the Americans that he's playing so well coming into the Ryder Cup..

Stats for the ranking go back 2 years based off wins and strength of the field... or something like that.

Woods' has won once this year, he had 5 or 6 wins last year.

You know, I was about to write this 2 page dissertation on the PGA Tour and the whole sponsors' exemption nonsense, but then my pizza arrived.

Pizza > golf.

Agreed...of course we must both be wrong since he's all cocky and arrogant and stuff.

Really, what's funny about that? Annoying? Maybe. Frustrating? Probably. Funny? Not really; at least not nearly as funny as the hypothetical situation I described.

What's wrong with a sponsor's exemption? Without sponsors, there's no golf. Without sponsors, there's no sports (see hockey ;) )

Not really, but maybe that's because it's 1:30 am here and I'm on seemingly my thousandth page of Corporations reading tonight. There is a kind of risk-reward that goes into being a smartass though, and I really do find it pretty amusing when the risk side wins out. :p
