Good camera for the amateur photographer?

My N95 camera isn't cutting it anymore, and I think it's about time I bought a real camera. I love taking pictures, and I have always wanted to pursue it as a hobby. Lately, I have been eyeing the Sony Alpha series (dSLR 200, 300, 350 specifically). I got the chance to play around with them in Best Buy and I really liked them. They were small and definitely more compact than the other cameras in its class. The menus were pretty easy to understand and seemed pretty intuitive.

So far, I am thinking choosing between the 300 and 350, only differences being is that the 350 has a 14.2 MP sensor and digital zoom, while the 300 has 10 MP. 14.2 MP is pretty much overkill for me and wouldn't digital zoom be useless for these kinds of cameras? I am leaning towards the 300 to be honest.

Comments? Suggestions? :D

Get the A300, much better at High ISO.

Check out the used Minolta lenses on the market, pretty cheap and often very high quality. :)

What lens will you be getting with it? Might I suggest the (SAL-16105) Sony 16-105mm f3.5-5.6, its a great lens to get started with. Gives you everything from wideangle to telephoto.

I am thinking of picking up those exact lens with it. :D

I usually recommend the Nikon D40 in these threads because it's so good for so cheap. You could find them on Amazon for $400 or less. I just looked now, however, and the price listed by Amazon is $500, which is stupid.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, you may wish to try a refurbished Canon Rebel XTi from Adorama for $300. Then get a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens for about $100.

I have never bought anything from Adorama before, new or refurbished, so I can't personally vouch for the quality, FYI.
