Good movies that aren't out on DVD

Thought it would be interesting to see a list of good movies that aren't available outside of VHS.... or possibly to point people to the DVD versions of movies they'd like to get/see....

Why? I can't believe Delicatessen isn't on DVD (at least in N. America). What else isn't out there that should be...?

A little deeper googling suggested that Delicatessen may be coming to DVD this year courtesy of Miramax... we'll see :)

I find it almost surprising now when I realize something's not available on this format... unless it's really old or maybe done by George Lucas. I'm sure Leonard will be out once the whole Cosby grope scandal blows over....

I'll believe it when I see it. Its only had about 50 or 60 release dates in the last 5 years. Its like Working Designs is producing the DVD. But the fact that there is an actual cover now seems promising.

A friend of mine is shooting a low budget WW2 horror film, and I recommended he watch Sam Fuller's Steel Helmet for inspiration. No DVD, and the VHS is next to impossible to find.

GODZILLA

Seriously, why is there no Region 1 release of the original Godzilla? It's appalling.

I think he's referring to the original (uncut) Japanese version, the absence of which on DVD is a little odd, seeing as it got a US theatrical release last year... I'd guess it's coming sooner or later, though.
I'm certainly not referring to the Americanized version with Raymond Burr thrown in. But yeah, I'd really, really like that original uncut one on DVD.

That and King Kong are really the two big movies that I desperately want on Region 1 DVD.

Oh, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights. I don't understand why that hasn't appeared.

Other than Raymond Burr, what's the big diff?
19 minutes of cut footage. And if you're seriously insinuating I shouldn't mind Raymond Burr's presence...

Your in luck. There's a special edition being put together. There was a story on AICN on about it I think...they recently found a ton of deleted footage that's going to be on the DVD in full-uncut glory.

Grand Prix would be an absolutely mindblowing DVD if it was done right, a movie that was shot in Super Panavision 70 (2.21:1). No movie comes close to showing racing action like this movie did, and 40 years later it's still one of the best shot movies I've ever seen.

And on the cheesey side, I want Animalympics on DVD damnit!

Damn, that's great news. Thanks for the info.

I want a Godzilla box set here. Not the crappy 3-5 movie sets. I want the 30-something disc complete box set like was released in Japan.

I know its already on DVD, but why is Seven Samurai like 30 bucks everywhere I go? Even my discount at best buy didn't do shit for it

The footage includes the complete brain sucking sequence in which Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) sucks out Dr. Bloch's (my wife Carolyn Purdy Gordon) eyeball and spits it out. The eyeball lands on the floor looking up at the camera (it took forever to get that shot). And then we push in on his mouth as he sucks out her brain through her eye socket. I can still remember the lady from the MPAA scolding me about this shot like I was a bad kid sent to the principal's office. "How could you have ever thought we would give you an R rating when instead of cutting away you continue to push in closer and closer AND CLOSER?!"

There is also some extended brain munching, nudity and violence. The only scene that is still missing is one I cut out myself. It occurs early in the film when Crawford goes to tell Dr. Pretorious that the Resonator is working. As Pretorious leaves his bedroom Crawford hears moaning inside and looks in. He sees a beautiful naked young woman trussed up S&M style. In her mouth is a large three-penny nail that has been pounded through her tongue. Crawford frees her and pulls out the nail. She throws a coat over her shoulders and runs out. I cut this scene because I thought the MPAA would never allow such perversion, and now every other kid has a pierced tongue. The lesson I learned is to never censor myself. The good folks at MGM are still looking for this scene.

Result!

My own personal post VHS era release would be school shlock shocker Class of 1984.

Thanks for going out of your way to post that stuff Cockles. That has made my day. Now all I need is a box set of all the Christopher Lee Dracula movies and my horror colection will be complete.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Police Squad (The TV series that the Naked Gun movies were based off of. It was only 6 or 8 episodes, but I still want it.)
