The DC version is by far the best version of the game ever made. You get an arcade-perfect port with zero loading time, arranged soundtrack, and an option to edit the counter gem pattern, so you can make all the characters "balanced" and make horrible characters awesome.

I thought Fever mode was incredibly well done, balanced extremely well. I've lost dozens of hours in multiplayer Fever, though it's understandable why you don't like it if you're referring to the part where the first player to reach Fever tends to win...but that's only when you're first learning the ropes.
