Good Question

Why is HAL churning out endless Kirby games instead of a new Smash Bros. which would undoubtedly sell better, thus making Nintendo more money?

... ?

Matt responds: I think the answer is clear. Kirby Air Ride sold a gargantuan 330,000 copies and Super Smash Bros. Melee only sold 2.5 million units. So of course it makes sense that Nintendo wants to capitalize on the success of Kir-- uh, wait...

I don't understand.
And is HAL even working directly on Jump Super Stars?

Hopefully there will be a smash ready for revolution launch.

Why doesn't Nintendo make a pokemon RPG for it's home consoles?
Why doesn't Nintendo go online?

These are just the unanswered questions of the universe.

Perhaps they want to release a sequel for the next console, considering this one is just about done.

Think about it. The new Zelda will be released next year. Revolution could release with a new Mario game and a good 6-9 months in, a sequel to Smash Bros. could be released.

Then why waste time on a new Kirby game that will sell < 200k instead of starting dev on Smash 3 now?
The mind reels... I want the next Smash to be the most polished title ever.

Seeing how many sequels have bombed this generation, maybe Nintendo knows what they're doing. SSBM is a very complete package, how much more could be achieved with a Gamecube sequel?

Keeping fans hungry for a next generation sequel gaurantees its success.

You don't know whether they are working on a new Smash title or not. It's all conjecture at this time.

A Kirby game is a safe and relatively easy investment from a development (and sales) perspective and keeps the stream of game releases coming for Nintendo. I doubt they are using all their resources considering the scope of a Kirby game.

Didn't the president of HAL Laboratory, Masahiro Sakurai, leave his position a while ago? If I remember correctly, he is the creator of the Smash Bros series. Maybe this is the reason we have not had a new one. Wasn't there some shakeup at HAL after this happened? Hmmmm...

Saturating the market with smash bros. games would work against Nintendo in the long run... though it's strange that they haven't adopted this approach for all their other franchises :|

If they made a new SSB too often it'd get old and people would stop caring, and it's popularity would go down to Kirby levels. Get it?

I'm quite happy with one Smash Bros. per generation. New Smash Bros. should be released during the Revolution launch window.

Sakurai being gone can't help...but then, look back at the N64. Mario 64, huge (best?) seller, cirtical favorite, no sequel.

Nintendo usually answers they are waiting for the right idea for a follow-up, but it seems like some franchises aren't held to that rule.

P.S.-We asked Reggie about this very thing (why no Smash Bros. sequel) in an interview for the next EGM, and got a very interesting answer.... :D

Nintendo seem to treat Smash Bros like Mario Kart. And given the sales of both franchises, maybe they're right.

Plus I think they just think they've gone as far as they can on the GC with a Smash Bros title.

Can't wait to hear that answer in EGM.

I think we're not getting more than one Smash Bros. game per platform for the same reason we don't get more than one Mario Kart, Mario Golf, or Mario Tennis per platform... there is little reason to make a sequel on the same system. Most other Nintendo titles can be given sequels by changing much of the game structure while keeping the game system much the same, but the aforementioned titles wouldn't do very well if you merely changed the game structure.

Mario Party relies on the game structure and levels MUCH more than the system -- the basic design behind the Mario Party titles remains the same, but the changes are present in the minigames. Each MP title is filled with different minigames, and that is where the appeal lies.
