Google Play Music All Access

Hi guys.

Spent the last few days doing a little chrome extension which works as a remote for Google Music.

It's not yet published since I've been trying to fix all bugs and weirdness here and there. I would very much appreciate if anyone installed it and gave me feedback since this is the final RC before I fully publish it.

Chrome Web Store link

Trying it right now, very cool concept! However, the tutorial was a bit janky, I had to refresh both tabs (Play Music + tutorial page) for it to get anywhere, and long pressing the button does nothing. Even on a page. When I try to long press the thumbs up/down buttons disappear and that's it.
Running Chrome Version 35.0.1916.99 beta-m on Windows 8.1

Hmmm.. I want to be able to share this across devices.
Though I only want 1 device to have access to my personal google stuff, like email, hangouts, etc...

Is that possible without too much trouble?
Also want it to be secure, not something that can easily be changed via a setting.

Was thinking of creating a separate account just for music...

Posted that in the Canadian GPAA thread,
but maybe I can get some help here. :P

The Music app (at least on Android) allows you to select which account it's connected to, so technically you should be able to do what you want with an additional account. Just add both Google accounts to the devices, then leave gmail/hangouts/etc on the default account and set the Music app to use the secondary account. This is all possible on desktop by signing in to multiple accounts as well. You will note that when you are logged in with multiple accounts Google pages will have the url to a format similar to the one below:
https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0

the u=0 part refers to the the user number (as signed in on your machine) so going to https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=1 would take you to the secondary accounts' Google Music page. Bookmark that and you're set.

Setting up Google Music is free so you should be able to try this out with multiple accounts with no risk. Then opt for the AA service if you want it.

Yeah, I think secondary account is the way to go for the service.
I want to leave a tablet in the living room that anyone can use that's attached to a receiver.

Don't have to worry about personal information being accessed by anyone. :P

Zeppu, your extension looks fantastic but I'm not so hot on it being an injection script. Why not make it a Chrome app? There's an alwaysOnTop property you can use to simulate the behavior without actually messing with every single tab page.

Although, I guess then it'd basically just be the official Mini Player haha.

I experimented around with that and I'll definitely convert as soon as the transparent background create window option drops the 'requires experimental API permission' requirement.

And yeah, the mini player is pretty terrible. It has a massive footprint for a 'mini' player (that you can't realistically keep it always on top) and I really dislike the forced icon on the taskbar because I already have Google Music run an app in its own window and pinned to the taskbar.

Is there any sort of quality control going on? I mean I assume there must be, but I'm finding here and there albums without tracks, song titles mixed up, heck an album were the first few tracks on the album were only 20-30 seconds.. etc etc.

Bought music from Google Music. It had incomplete metadata (artist field was missing another artists name who collaborated). Bought the same track on iTunes and it had complete and accurate metadata. This plus Google's selection for Trance music is piss poor compared to iTunes and Amazon MP3. Going to use iTunes for desktop and buying music while using Google Music for syncing libraries to my android phone.

Something's not right. I'm trying to find the album for Anastasia but it's not coming up. I looked on the Google Play Store and it's there. This has never happened before.

Hey, has anyone experienced any artists being removed? I have noticed my artist count drop (so evidently someone has been removed from All Access) but frustratingly, I don't know who and Google doesn't inform you either.

Not necessarily with AA yet, but I remember this happening to me with Spotify back when I was using that and I was never notified then either. I would assume the same happens with AA too, probably due to licensing issues. It's super annoying.

Is there a reason a particular song on an album would be available on my computer (along with the rest of the album), but missing on my mobile app? I think this has happened to me with more than one song, but right now the song Super Rich Kids doesn't show up on the mobile app in the Frank Ocean album Channel Orange. I was just playing it on my computer earlier today.

Do you maybe have the downloaded only switch on? I think I've done that before. I was looking for a song I hadn't even synced to my device yet.

Sway fm no longer needed to use media keys to control google play music even if chrome is not the foreground app !

After installing the Google play music EXTENSION (not the app in the web store) ( bottom right corner of playback screen)

Then in the extension pane of Chrome settings, on the bottom right (again) there is a menu with keyboard shortcuts.

In there, if you have the extension installed, you can set shortcuts for
  • Play/Pause
  • Next track
  • Previous Track
  • Stop Playback
You can use the keys you want to (for example if your keyboard doesn't have media keys)!

You can also select if these shortcuts are only enabled when Chrome is in the foreground, or all of the time

Tested on Mac and Windows.

And HTML5 audio works too.

Wait... Wait... Wait...

If you download an artist's Single album via subscription, once their full album releases their Single album gets entirely removed from your Library and your Playlists?

Many Singles albums look like they're gone for good once a full album comes along. I've noticed my recent playlist go from a clean 100 to 97 songs. I managed to re-add one song and noticed the artist had finally released their first full-length album. But it's infuriating because their new album wasn't under New Releases, and now I have two other songs now I don't remember I lost. And since it was just their Single album I put in my library, they are entirely erased from My Library --> Artist.

What is this bullshit? There's no "Albums/Artists Removed from your Library" notification I'm missing, right? Even under Settings --> Downloads, there's no trace of the removed artist/albums.

I havent ever encountered this. I definitely buy a lot of singles from the Play Store too. Very rarely albums. I have seen in the past singles/instrumentals no longer be available for purchase after the album drops, but its never been removed from my library, whether I bought the single or just added it to my playlists via subscription.

It shouldn't be removed if you bought the single. Might depend on the artist.

Just through All-Access subscription and not through buying, I noticed more popular artists like Taylor Swift's singles from two years ago are still available and still in my library alongside her full album. But it's the fifth time and fifth band I've come across where their singles are removed and their album is added in place. It wouldn't bother me so greatly if they could just notify you when they're removing shit from your playlists and library.

Stupid question, how do I import my existing library onto Google All Access?

My existing library is on my Nexus tablet.

Two ways:

1) Upload the songs by opening your Google Music All Access page. Near the top, there should be a bright orange banner that says upload. Click on it and drag your whole music folder into the browser window.

2) Download the Google Play Music app and set it to auto-upload all of your files by selecting the folder they reside in.

[edit] Woops, missed the part where it was on your Nexus Tablet. In what format? You should just be able to drag them out by connecting it to your PC, moving the folders there, and then using any of the above methods.

Well my hard drive crashed with all of my music on it, so I would pretty much have to rip all my CD's again onto my new hard drive to accomplish this?

If they're on the tablet, you can just click and drag them onto your computer. No need to re-rip anything.

Been meaning to ask this since I've been sticking with Google Play and mostly prefer it over Spotify, is there really no notifications or emails or anything to say "Hey, this artist you follow/have music in your library/whatever, has a new album available! Check it out!

I have over 300 artists, loads of whom have released new albums and singles and the only emails I have ever gotten from Google about the service have been my monthly payment receipts.

I've received Google Now notifications for new albums on artists I've searched for.

Late reply, but thanks for the heads up. So very annoying to not have any specific news updates to when something is uploaded. Just had another example where I had no idea a new album was on there.

i never really notice notifications other than albums popping up in "listen now" . works pretty well for me though IMO. I usually hit that up when im using the service

Well yeah, there's that, and I always comb that over, but it's not like there's even a "specific new albums" for you!

edit: Wish it would keep auto scrolling as well in all sections :( Keep loading stuff as I scroll down!

Came in here to post that the google play music bubble extension has literally improved my life 100%. This is dope as fuck
