Santorum would have been ripped to shreds and I wouldn't be worrying now.
I won't even contemplate voting for Romney, but I would at least have an internal debate about voting for Santorum.

is there anyone out there aside from religious people that are against abortions?
It is pretty hilarious how IvF isn't tackled by many when depending on the success rate it can come at the cost of several embryos as well as the frozen ones.
There are, 20% of polled "Nonreligious"-people in a recent Gallup poll said that they were pro-life.
Are you guys really shocked by this?
Really?
That won't happen without people pushing to the other side.Well in her segment about it, Rachel did cite a study or poll or something that showed Americans have been getting more conservative in their views over time. I don't have any evidence of my own so I can't really defend the idea but it would seem like the only real reason for them pushing such extreme views.
As much as we all hate on them and laugh at them, they probably aren't as stupid as we like to think (dear god I hope the actually are) so they have to know that their views are not winning ones. Maybe they are just blindly following the bible, completely unaware that society and reality have progressed miles and miles ahead of them but I doubt it. There has to be some calculation or strategy they are making where they end up benefiting from all this at some point in the future.
I hope not though. Hopefully this is their last flame before America has a great epiphany and puts the GOP right next to the Nazis on the list of "Groups no one should ever be a part of ever again for the good of the universe."

What?
The reality of abortion in America is that "pro-life" and "pro-choice" don't cover it any more. Regardless of how people identify, a significant majority of Americans support abortion in some cases and oppose it in others. It's become nuanced, which is probably a good thing.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/1576/abortion.aspx
Notably, over three-quarters of Americans think that rape, incest, or danger to the mother are acceptable reasons for abortions.
Which is what I think about most Republican positions.Abortion is one of those things that many people seem to like to look down upon . . . until they, their daughter, sister, etc. needs one. Then it is an exception that is OK.

It's sad that not everyone would approve of an abortion that would save the mother's life.

Well he did use Mary as a broodmareIf your whole ideology is god's will then god's will be done.
Abortion is one of those things that many people seem to like to look down upon . . . until they, their daughter, sister, etc. needs one. Then it is an exception that is OK.
And it has been around for so long that it would be hard to ever eliminate.
There's no way this is true. I would say "unfortunately," but contrary to what public opinion polls suggest, most people aren't really against abortion. They say they are, but when one slips past the goalie in their own life... yup.
But I guess it serves to get GAF's blood boiling.
Republicans approved platform language on Tuesday calling for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no explicit exceptions for cases of rape or incest.
http://news.yahoo.com/gop-platform-draft-odds-romney-abortion-015921311.htmlTAMPA, Fla. (AP) A GOP committee outlined a party platform Tuesday with positions on key social and entitlement issues far more strict than the presidential candidate they plan to nominate next week.
The platform panel of the Republican National Committee voted to propose a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion without specific exceptions for rape or incest, a position at odds with presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.
The decisions in Tampa, as delegates began making their way to Florida for next week's Republican National Convention, are a reminder that, despite months of effort by Romney to project party unity, he is out of step with his party's most committed activists.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, chairman of the RNC's Committee on Resolutions, said the platform "reflects the views of the grassroots leaders of the Republican Party."
Romney's opponents during the nominating campaign complained that the former Massachusetts was not sufficiently conservative.

The problem with abortion is that compromise is almost impossible to attain.
The pro-choice people are like "It's my body, I shouldn't have to compromise."
While the anti-choice people believe "It's a life! You can't end it!"
Maddow has a good point.
So, the GOP is supposedly about small government and "teh freedomz!" right?
So, logically speaking, shouldn't they be FIRST IN LINE at trying to get a gay marriage legislation? You know freedom from tyrannical government interfering with my life! The First in line to abolish the Patriot Act? The First in line to give women equal opportunity? To promote and celebrate religious freedom?
Right-wingers dislike government because they feel it's inefficient and only causes issues when it tries to accomplish anything. It's a burden, not a help.
They feel the reason government is so inefficient are the politicians who aren't in it to serve the American people but their own self interest.
Politicians often serve their own self interest because those interest are bought by lobbyist, wealthy campaign contributions or big business that promises them all kinds of benefits or perks....so the politician does their bidding, not that of the American people.
So they believe we need to take government out of our lives and let the free market reign supreme.
Now, what are these lobbyist, wealthy campaign contributions and big business benefits trying to buy from a politician when they give all these things? Power and influence over legislation as to benefit themselves.
What does the G-O-P favor? Less regulation over basically every thing (except religion they favor giant regulation over the American people when it comes to their version of Christianity).
In other words: Government is inefficient... doing the bidding of the lobbyist, wealthy campaign contributors and big business due to the millions upon millions funneled into the political process...
And their solution to make our country stronger...is by simply eliminating the need for these businesses to bribe our government officials by handing this nation directly over to them, unregulated, giving them exactly what they want.
So the REASON that our government is so inefficient is their solution to make our country more efficient and prosperous.
Because that makes PERFECT sense...if you're insane.
GOP doesn't want Obama telling them what to do with their healthcare.
GOP tells women what to do with their healthcare.

Hmmm...
I cannot think of a good argument for IvF, as it is right now, from anti-abortion people. If you are anti-abortion you should logically be anti-IvF. Although I'd love to hear an argument why this isn't true.
Thousands of embryos that cannot be used for fertility treatment are discarded as medical waste each year by IVF clinics. Embryos are discarded for a variety of reasons. Some do not develop normally, while others are found to carry genetic defects that cause serious disease. Some parents simply choose to discard leftover embryos when they are done with fertility treatment. With the parents consent, embryos slated for disposal can be used by researchers to derive embryonic stem cells.
Can leftover embryos be donated to other couples?
Yes. Parents can elect to donate unused embryos to others seeking fertility treatment, a practice sometimes called embryo adoption. But few parents choose to do so. For every embryo that is donated to others, more than 100 embryos are discarded. Currently, more than 400,000 embryos are frozen in fertility clinics, and most will eventually be discarded.
At the same time, fewer than 200 children have been born through the Snowflakes Embryo Adoption Program since it was founded in 1997. There is no conflict between embryo adoption and stem cell research, as it is up to parents to decide whether to donate their unused embryos to others, to discard the embryos, or to donate them for medical research.

Yeah . . . I suspect that if divorce were something that could be done privately and without other people knowing, they would oppose divorce strongly in the GOP. But since it is a very public affair (quite literally for people like Newt), they have enough shame not to oppose it.

These guys are god damned idiots. My last comment for this thread.
That picture of the female reproductive system above is probably very accurate.
This is all bull shit. It all based on a crazy comment made by a senate candidate that the republican party has dismissed. They want this idiot to drop out.
Again the Republican party may be crazy, but they are not stupid. They are pro life because there is a very large portion of the population that just votes on that one topic. They will not pursue it to any end. They get that 10 percent of the vote just by sticking to the line. The same with the democrats and welfare and such. It is sadly a grab with no intent of an actual result.
Our current political system is based on finding the one thing that stupid people of various groups are passionate about beyond every other issue. And then they become a president and they do nothing about it because they ran on that topic just to get that 10% who found the most silly thing to be the most important voting issue.
I understand what you are trying to say. But then why have an official platform on abortion that provides no exceptions?
You know if they're going to be all up in my business, can I get some names of anti-abortion leaning politicians who have used IvF? Just so I know how hypocritical these fuckheads are?
So far I got Romney, who else.
That is not the Republican platform.
That is not the Republican platform. As I stated earlier this will not be something that is stressed at the Republican convention. This whole crazy witch hunt comes from one guy who is a complete idiot, that the Republican party has pretty much disavowed, (Hannity, Limbaugh, and Coulter all think he should drop out.) Even the crazy right wingers are disavowing this concept and It is not policy. Romney will not try and make it policy.
CNN said:The Republican Party is once again set to enshrine into its official platform support for "a human life amendment" to the Constitution that would outlaw abortion without making explicit exemptions for rape or incest, according to draft language of the platform obtained exclusively by CNN late Monday.

That's about as official as you can get. Then again, they've always had this in their platform, so it's not exactly breaking news.
I doubt Romney will claim to back that kind of amendment in the run-up to election, though.
