GOP set to adopt official abortion platform without exceptions for rape and incest

It is pretty hilarious how IvF isn't tackled by many when depending on the success rate it can come at the cost of several embryos as well as the frozen ones.

If prolifers had any integrity, they would have opposed invitrofertilization from the start, seeing as how for every successful implantation/birth, an average of a dozen embryos are destroyed in the process. Also, the irony as it related to their ad nauseum warning meme of "playing god" totally eludes them as well, since they seem happy to disregard "god's will" by undergoing external means of reproduction.

There are, 20% of polled "Nonreligious"-people in a recent Gallup poll said that they were pro-life.

That's not entirely shocking. I'm non-religious, but I still struggle with the issue. At the end of the day, I'm never going to get a woman pregnant so it doesn't really matter what I think.

Well in her segment about it, Rachel did cite a study or poll or something that showed Americans have been getting more conservative in their views over time. I don't have any evidence of my own so I can't really defend the idea but it would seem like the only real reason for them pushing such extreme views.

As much as we all hate on them and laugh at them, they probably aren't as stupid as we like to think (dear god I hope the actually are) so they have to know that their views are not winning ones. Maybe they are just blindly following the bible, completely unaware that society and reality have progressed miles and miles ahead of them but I doubt it. There has to be some calculation or strategy they are making where they end up benefiting from all this at some point in the future.

I hope not though. Hopefully this is their last flame before America has a great epiphany and puts the GOP right next to the Nazis on the list of "Groups no one should ever be a part of ever again for the good of the universe."
That won't happen without people pushing to the other side.

is there anyone out there aside from religious people that are against abortions?

The reality of abortion in America is that "pro-life" and "pro-choice" don't cover it any more. Regardless of how people identify, a significant majority of Americans support abortion in some cases and oppose it in others. It's become nuanced, which is probably a good thing.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/1576/abortion.aspx

Notably, over three-quarters of Americans think that rape, incest, or danger to the mother are acceptable reasons for abortions.

Abortion is one of those things that many people seem to like to look down upon . . . until they, their daughter, sister, etc. needs one. Then it is an exception that is OK.

And it has been around for so long that it would be hard to ever eliminate.

It's sad that not everyone would approve of an abortion that would save the mother's life.

There's no way this is true. I would say "unfortunately," but contrary to what public opinion polls suggest, most people aren't really against abortion. They say they are, but when one slips past the goalie in their own life... yup.

But I guess it serves to get GAF's blood boiling.

Republicans approved platform language on Tuesday calling for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no explicit exceptions for cases of rape or incest.

Another article on it. . . .

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A GOP committee outlined a party platform Tuesday with positions on key social and entitlement issues far more strict than the presidential candidate they plan to nominate next week.

The platform panel of the Republican National Committee voted to propose a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion without specific exceptions for rape or incest, a position at odds with presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.

The decisions in Tampa, as delegates began making their way to Florida for next week's Republican National Convention, are a reminder that, despite months of effort by Romney to project party unity, he is out of step with his party's most committed activists.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, chairman of the RNC's Committee on Resolutions, said the platform "reflects the views of the grassroots leaders of the Republican Party."
Romney's opponents during the nominating campaign complained that the former Massachusetts was not sufficiently conservative.

grassroots leaders? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Really an amazing read. I highly recommend it for everyone.
Very interesting. I've seen similar articles before.

Yeah . . . I suspect that if divorce were something that could be done privately and without other people knowing, they would oppose divorce strongly in the GOP. But since it is a very public affair (quite literally for people like Newt), they have enough shame not to oppose it.

The problem with abortion is that compromise is almost impossible to attain.

The pro-choice people are like "It's my body, I shouldn't have to compromise."
While the anti-choice people believe "It's a life! You can't end it!"

That some are unwilling to compromise about their own bodies is nothing to lament.

Maddow has a good point.

She made a good point tonight . . .

Akin has his crazy pseudo-science theory where he believes raped women can't really get pregnant. Therefore, if he were to ban all abortions, you would not be forcing rape victims to bear the child because they would not get pregnant (in his world).

The presidential campaign said Paul Ryan disagrees with that psuedo-science view of rape victims not getting pregnant. But his position has always been ban all abortion with no exception for rape.

So which one of those two is really the bigger asshole?
The guy who wants to force rape victims to bear the rapists child obviously.

So, the GOP is supposedly about small government and "teh freedomz!" right?

So, logically speaking, shouldn't they be FIRST IN LINE at trying to get a gay marriage legislation? You know freedom from tyrannical government interfering with my life! The First in line to abolish the Patriot Act? The First in line to give women equal opportunity? To promote and celebrate religious freedom?

Right-wingers dislike government because they feel it's inefficient and only causes issues when it tries to accomplish anything. It's a burden, not a help.

They feel the reason government is so inefficient are the politicians who aren't in it to serve the American people but their own self interest.

Politicians often serve their own self interest because those interest are bought by lobbyist, wealthy campaign contributions or big business that promises them all kinds of benefits or perks....so the politician does their bidding, not that of the American people.

So they believe we need to take government out of our lives and let the free market reign supreme.

Now, what are these lobbyist, wealthy campaign contributions and big business benefits trying to buy from a politician when they give all these things? Power and influence over legislation as to benefit themselves.

What does the G-O-P favor? Less regulation over basically every thing (except religion they favor giant regulation over the American people when it comes to their version of Christianity).

In other words: Government is inefficient... doing the bidding of the lobbyist, wealthy campaign contributors and big business due to the millions upon millions funneled into the political process...

And their solution to make our country stronger...is by simply eliminating the need for these businesses to bribe our government officials by handing this nation directly over to them, unregulated, giving them exactly what they want.

So the REASON that our government is so inefficient is their solution to make our country more efficient and prosperous.

Because that makes PERFECT sense...if you're insane.

GOP doesn't want Obama telling them what to do with their healthcare.

GOP tells women what to do with their healthcare.

Hmmm...

I cannot think of a good argument for IvF, as it is right now, from anti-abortion people. If you are anti-abortion you should logically be anti-IvF. Although I'd love to hear an argument why this isn't true.

It's hard as hell to find numbers on how many embryos are discarded in the process of IvF in the US but I came across this in UofMichigan stem cell research page:

Thousands of embryos that cannot be used for fertility treatment are discarded as medical waste each year by IVF clinics. Embryos are discarded for a variety of reasons. Some do not develop normally, while others are found to carry genetic defects that cause serious disease. Some parents simply choose to discard leftover embryos when they are done with fertility treatment. With the parents’ consent, embryos slated for disposal can be used by researchers to derive embryonic stem cells.

Can leftover embryos be donated to other couples?

Yes. Parents can elect to donate unused embryos to others seeking fertility treatment, a practice sometimes called embryo adoption. But few parents choose to do so. For every embryo that is donated to others, more than 100 embryos are discarded. Currently, more than 400,000 embryos are frozen in fertility clinics, and most will eventually be discarded.

At the same time, fewer than 200 children have been born through the Snowflakes Embryo Adoption Program since it was founded in 1997. There is no conflict between embryo adoption and stem cell research, as it is up to parents to decide whether to donate their unused embryos to others, to discard the embryos, or to donate them for medical research.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/21/13398838-romney-akin-should-exit-the-senate-race?lite

Was this posted yet?

Might be new thread worthy..

"As I said yesterday, Todd Akin's comments were offensive and wrong and he should very seriously consider what course would be in the best interest of our country," Romney said in a statement. "Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race." -Mitt.

So looks like both sides can stand down.. no need to defend Akin anymore.

You know if they're going to be all up in my business, can I get some names of anti-abortion leaning politicians who have used IvF? Just so I know how hypocritical these fuckheads are?

So far I got Romney, who else.

Kodos: It's true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about it? It's a two-party system; you have to vote for one of us.
[murmurs]
Man1: He's right, this is a two-party system.
Man2: Well, I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.
[Kang and Kodos laugh out loud]
[Ross Perot smashes his "Perot 96" hat]

I do not think this is true. Just like the Republicans forcing the draft again from a couple of elections ago. If it was true, it would destroy any chance they had of defeating Obama. Just looking at that recent senatorial candidate where even the likes of Limbaugh and Coulter want to see the guy drop out, this is fringe beyond the fringe. Similar to Bush and his marriage amendment which was just a play for a specific vote, but in the end he did not really attempt to try and pass it. This just sounds like fear mongering, and the Republican convention will not even touch the topic.

Oh, they'll start ramping up the anti-divorce rhetoric soon enough. They're already starting to espouse "those of us still married to our first and only wife".

These guys are god damned idiots. My last comment for this thread.

That picture of the female reproductive system above is probably very accurate.

Beat me to it! As soon as I saw what you quoted I was going to pull this up. What I love about this are its parallels to prohibition. I remember watching a documentary on the groups pushing for prohibition and a common theme among them was "Yes, well of course liquor is fine for us since we're sensible people, but it has to be kept out of the hands of the poor and the dishonest because they turn into monsters with the drink."

It's an interesting, but utterly misguided, selfish, hypocritical and delusional, train of thought these people have.

This is all bull shit. It all based on a crazy comment made by a senate candidate that the republican party has dismissed. They want this idiot to drop out.

Again the Republican party may be crazy, but they are not stupid. They are pro life because there is a very large portion of the population that just votes on that one topic. They will not pursue it to any end. They get that 10 percent of the vote just by sticking to the line. The same with the democrats and welfare and such. It is sadly a grab with no intent of an actual result.

Our current political system is based on finding the one thing that stupid people of various groups are passionate about beyond every other issue. And then they become a president and they do nothing about it because they ran on that topic just to get that 10% who found the most silly thing to be the most important voting issue.

I understand what you are trying to say. But then why have an official platform on abortion that provides no exceptions?

That is not the Republican platform. As I stated earlier this will not be something that is stressed at the Republican convention. This whole crazy witch hunt comes from one guy who is a complete idiot, that the Republican party has pretty much disavowed, (Hannity, Limbaugh, and Coulter all think he should drop out.) Even the crazy right wingers are disavowing this concept and It is not policy. Romney will not try and make it policy.

CNN said:
The Republican Party is once again set to enshrine into its official platform support for "a human life amendment" to the Constitution that would outlaw abortion without making explicit exemptions for rape or incest, according to draft language of the platform obtained exclusively by CNN late Monday.

That's about as official as you can get. Then again, they've always had this in their platform, so it's not exactly breaking news.

I doubt Romney will claim to back that kind of amendment in the run-up to election, though.

.

Not to mention that every Republican Representative voted to make that into actual law.

Reminds me of that focus group that flat out REFUSED to believe that Romney's plan would give the rich tax cuts and reduce Medicare benefits.

A CNN story is as official as you can get? We will know very soon if this story is true or not. And if it is, I will not defend that position. I am simply stating that I think the story is bull shit. The fact that the party including Romney is attacking those statements by dimb ass senator displays to me that this is not an issue that the party wants to run on.

I'll be a registered Democrat by year's end. I realized that I'm socially liberal to the fullest extent and that America's economic and military policies will not change according to the President's party. At this point, we might as well work on reinforcing human rights and social equality the Democratic way, they seem to get the most done.

Still can't believe the abortion topic in this country. Men with penises shouldn't even be at the discussion table. End of story.

That is not the Republican platform. As I stated earlier this will not be something that is stressed at the Republican convention.

It's been the official Republican platform for at least the last couple elections. The Republican Congress has pushed bills trying to do it, including one co-sponsored by Paul Ryan, which funnily enough also tried to redefine rape into Forcible Rape. "Forcible Rape" is a term that was popularized by the same guy who popularized the "Women who are raped rarely get pregnant" theory. That same man endorsed Romney in 2007, and Romney himself touted that endorsement.

This is not one lone man. You can't weasel out of this shit.

This whole crazy witch hunt comes from one guy who is a complete idiot, that the Republican party has pretty much disavowed, (Hannity, Limbaugh, and Coulter all think he should drop out.) Even the crazy right wingers are disavowing this concept and It is not policy.

The party disavowed him because they're in the middle of an election and it looks incredibly bad with independents. Hannity, Limbaugh, and Coulter would all be fiercely defending him if they thought they could get away with it. What's more, they thought they could pressure him into dropping out and thus getting their extreme abortion views out of the spotlight. It has nothing to do with principle.

What's more, you still have people like Dana Losche and the AFA defending this guy.

Romney will not try and make it policy.

To be honest, I can't say either way. Romney's been on both sides of every issue, including abortion. I have no idea how he'll govern, which frightens me. You also have his VP who, up until two weeks ago, supported banning abortion including in cases of rape. Now he says he doesn't support the ban. He's not too dissimilar from Romney. He's a self-touting deficit hawk, yet voted for all of Bush's incredibly massive spending; he's against stimulus, but asked for stimulus money and even voted for a $700 billion Republican stimulus bill. Who knows how these crazy assholes are going to govern?

A CNN story is as official as you can get? We will know very soon if this story is true or not.

No, it was already officially approved today (er, yesterday). These aren't anonymous sources or something. Here, it takes all of five seconds to google this:

The New York Times, from today yesterday

5:35 p.m. | Updated
Even as the Republican establishment continued to call for Representative Todd Akin of Missouri to drop out of his Senate race because of his comments on rape and abortion, Republicans approved platform language on Tuesday calling for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no explicit exceptions for cases of rape or incest
