Got my Gamecube component cable. What's next?

tedtropy

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
After seeing that Nintendo's store is backordered on the cable until at least next year, I took the plunge and just plopped down $50 for one on eBay. Well, it came in today (Japanese box for +2 Geekgility) and so far I've tried Metroid Prime, Prime 2, and RE4 with progressive scan enabled and it's a hell of an improvement for the first two titles. As others have mentioned, RE4 looks kinda...shit in 480p. What other cheap titles can I grab that'll look good in 480p? When I hold down the 'B' button to enable progressive scan, do I have to do it every time I play the game? Why, oh why, couldn't Nintendo have implemented this switch in the damn system menu? Ah well, I guess I should consider myself lucking for even having a Gamecube with the HD-out. Thanks.

Yep. RE4 looks a bit crappy in 480p. Not sure why.

No, once you set progressive scan once, each game that has the mode will ask you automatically when you boot up your cube. Just press A.

Almost all first party games support progressive scan. Many third parties do as well. Once you enable it on a game, the menu will always come up, so pressing B at startup isn't necessary after that.

As for games, F-Zero GX, and SCII look fantastic in 480p.

Oh yeah. You might want to pick Ikaruga... IF YOU CAN FIND IT!!! MWHAHAHAHA!!!!! :lol :lol :lol :lol AM I RITE?! :lol

Listen to no one, F-Zero GX is one of the best, fast paced, and most beautiful racers you can purchase. Every time I hit the highspeeds it makes you feel like your on a roller coaster, an incredible feeling for a video game.

MGS: Twin Snakes, Pikmin 2, Alien Hominid, Mario titles also look beautiful.

Your emoticons both frighten and confuse me. I think Ikaruga looks great, it's just not really my genre, and seems hard as hell.

Thanks to everyone on the feedback thus far. Looks like I'll be raiding my local Gamestop for F-Zero X.

Ikaruga isn't all THAT hard, actually. I'm not much of a shmup player, but I've played the game all the way through. It's actually got a different feel from any other shooter I've played due to the black/white mechanic. It really almost feels more like a puzzle game than a shooter at times, as you've got to assess a situation, and figure out when is the best time to switch colors while still attacking the other enemies.

Wind Waker looks great - crisp and sweet, but some effects end up with weird cross-hatch interpolation instead of a translucent alpha channel.

PS. My component cable was $14.99

Yeah, Wind Waker and F-Zero look fantastic. Definitely get those.

Wow, where'd you buy your cable at?

So you have to "switch progressive on"? I thought it just autodetected. Or at least, I think I just hooked up my Cube via the cables and didn't do anything else. I think...

Whaaa? I'd like to know also.

How did you get one for that price?

It'll work with the component cable by default, but you have to manually enable progressive scan. Go-go Nintendo modern TV support!

I'm assuming this is in the GC settings menu, right?

It's been said already, but F-Zero is a must for 480p + 16:9. The game is razor sharp and extremely clean.

I bought my component cable from Nintendo's website just last month. If they are really sold out until next year, I guess it's a good thing I snagged one. I think I saw a universal one on eb's website that had cube support.

Hmm, I highly doubt that there is a universal component cable with Cube support. Unlike the other systems, the Cube cable actually contains a DSP chip. That's one of the reasons I believe that 3rd parties have not created any GC component cables...

Or go the import route--NCS, Lik-Sang, the usual suspects. That's how I got mine after seeing the U.S. version perpetually on back-order.

Yeah. I was wrong, look here.

There's some kind of snafu going on. It shows support for GCN but people in the reviews are saying the actual product is something else. =/

I was actually wondering about this recently. What do you think of these '3 platform' component cables on eBay which, unlike the EB version, actually do have a gamecube input:

Any idea whether these would permit progressive scan, or is there reason to expect that they wouldn't include the necessary chip?

I'm willing to bet they won't work. It may output 480i, but as others have said the actual GC component cable has a DSP in it. Also, I wouldn't recommend using those 3-in-1 cables regardless, they add noticeable interference to the video and sound quality. I made the mistake of using a 3-in-1 S-video one before, and if I can see the effects on interlaced video you can imagine how much it craps on progressive stuff. Just give your consoles the discrete connections they deserve.

Considering they are only using the analog a/v out connection, they definitely won't work.

Well, since they're not that cheap anyway, I'm not willing to bet that they would work. Glad I asked! Unless someone has tried one and can verify otherwise...

Hah, yeah, thanks for pointing that out. That cable's just going to give you interlaced over component for the GC, which will basically look the same as an S-video connection.

Hah, eBay auctions are hillarious...

Retail $129.99?. You could buy this cable at your already-overpriced local Gamestop for like $20. I also like how they sneak 'Monster Gold' into the auction title, despite the fact that this is obviously just a cheap Pelican cable. The fact that they advertise it as an HD cable, despite the fact that it won't do 480p on the 'cube is nice.
