This excites me the most. The jump from VC to SA was amazing and according to Rockstar, that was their "test" for SA.

Apparently they didn't even have the city picked in 09.
So I'd say probably around 3 years dev time.
Just because they don't have the city picked, it doesn't mean they can't start the project. Even if they didn't pick up the city by '09, they have probably been working on many things before then. Character models, vehicles, vehicle performance, improving the engine, etc..

God, this thread has got me thinking of all the Rockstar developer or Rockstar influenced titles I've played and loved this generation.

Bully (played it on the Xbox 360)
Grand Theft Auto IV
Lost and The Damned
Ballad of Gay Tony
Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Red Dead Redemption
LA Noire

And now they have a great-looking Max Payne game on the way...

Rockstar truly are the rockstars of this industry.

They may not always do things the right way, they may piss people off as much as they entertain them, but fuck it, they'll make the games they want, how they want, and they'll tackle whatever thematic challenges and sacred cows they feel like.

Why? Because they can. And better than anybody else making games today.

Random mobs, people walking on the streets, policemen. They are all pretty standard. Same for the cars, if they already decided when (not where) is it going to happen, you got all that stuff already covered.

I think the most exciting thing about GTA V for me is that:

1) They know the current gen tech now, they've mastered it and aren't limited by lack of knowledge/know how

But IMO they are kind of limited by the current console hardware now.

While they might, that doesn't mean we won't be getting something that could potentially be/look much better than GTAIV. Just because the hardware is the same, it doesn't mean they can't develop better tools to get the best out of that same hardware (they are doing so, indeed).

Definitely looking forward to the announcement trailer in just a couple days...

GTA III had loading
GTA Vice City had bigger island, much more details and interaction, and only two loadings between big islands
GTA San Andreas didn't had any loading lol

People should cherish the fact that some developers take the time and the effort to really learn the hardware architecture of certain consoles.

Sure, it's quite tempting to jump the development to the next generation, but there is something inherently adorable in people who say 'no, we can squeeze more out of this box'.

This is how we get the San Andreas games, this is how we get Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. If Rockstar says they are going with the current generation, but the game has more features at the cost of visuals, I say yes.

If some players care only about the graphics and horsepower, get a PC. Plenty of half-baked crap on there.

You are absolutely correct. I loved all of the games except L.A. Noire, also I played Bully last gen. Great game though.

Can't wait for this.

October 2012 although I could see them delaying to Spring again.

Production began in 2009 according to Houser, although it was probably a little sooner.

Yep, that trailer was incredible. Unfortunately the game didn't turn out as sweet as that trailer (also funny how they removed tons of features from that trailer).
Out of curiosity, what did they end up removing?

I know I definitey can. Saints Row has me covered in the over the top department. I want GTA and Rockstar to focus on a serious story with satire of course. RDR and GTAIV were amazing.

People always talk about IV being serious but the least outrageous character was Niko. All the supporting characters were pretty crazy, especially Brucie. I found it very hard to take the game as a serious story when the other characters were so over the top. And Niko's actions being so far from his own words made me think they couldn't be very serious with his storyline either. He would start talking about doing the right thing and then the body count would start piling up. It never came off as Rockstar's intention to make it more serious. Seemed like they were poking fun at these kind of stories. Maybe the more realistic approach to the world and graphics made everyone take the game more serious than they should have.

There will be no visual downgrade, as RDR looks better than 99% of linear games on the market, and its last year game. Anyway, we all know R* are going to sacrifice a bit of performance for better visuals, thats because visual/style is one of major components of GTA games. You need to feel like you are in real, breathing world packed with details.

RDR has the advantage of being a much more barren landscape than a game set in a city.
Actually, being barren has its drawbacks too. Making landscape look authentic and good can be very taxing on system, especially if you have alot of grass which is heavy on bandwidth. When modeling city alot of stuff can be culled out of the way since you can't see it, so yea, people should expect better visuals, especially since they dropped MSAA.

screw visuals, saints row 2/3 looks decent enough for me and doesn't have these gigantic frame drops each time stuff explodes. I know this is because of euphoria, which for me is the biggest game changer I've seen in my life. I love it so much but impact on performance with the consoles is just to big to keep enjoying the game.

When keepin it real goes wrong. Very, very wrong.

I agree with this being 1000 percent.

Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games of all time.

Am hyped.
Sorry to quote you but it's good but not that good. If GTA SA had the same shooting mechanics and physics then it would easily be the best but it gets knocked down due to the aiming and general control of things.

I'm definitely still excited to see which locations and such we will be exploring. If anything, Rockstar has proven they can do open world online free roam. They need story co op though. Saints Row is doing it right at this time.

Damn you and your airtight security, Rockstar! Why can't you just let something leak early for once?

Just kidding (sort of). I would love to be able to see the trailer ASAP, but I think it's really cool that Rockstar has so much control over the marketing of their games. They never let anything slip out until they're damn well ready, and that's rare in this day and age.

The tech used to built a living, breathing city is still unmatched this gen. They could just use what they have and improve animations, driving, shooting, etc.

I'd actually love to see a GTA that exactly mirrors the cover artwork. It'd be like an episode of Archer come to life, except with GTA's trademark style. It seems possible on today's hardware, and might even be less resource-intensive than whatever method they're using now. I'm pulling that out of my ass, of course, but it's where I'd like the series to go from an artistic standpoint.

Multiplayer is in again. There are a couple of new game modes, co-op story, and 32-player game modes for consoles and 64 player for PC. PC also includes dedicated servers.

32-player dogfights over Los-Santos in the Harrier Jump Jet would be glorious.

-The game revolves around money in a big deal. I’d reveal the big idea, but I don’t want to ruin it.

hmmmmmmmm i was gonna say paid DLC and etc to progress the game haha but then i read the spoiler stuff from that 4chan thing and it makes sense for that money stuff, i am taking the insider stuff with a grain of salt.

fuuuuuuuu hurry up Wednesday, what time is it going up?

Hmm, I'm willing to get hyped about this, but I hope it's able to stray from the usual Rockstar open-world formula.

If it's structured exactly the same as GTA4 and RDR I'm going to be dissapointed.
-Make way to icon on map
-"hey [protagonist] how's it going? I want you to do [mission] for me."
-[mission]
-"Thanks for doing [mission] for me!" Maybe I'll help continue the overall story if you do 10 more missions for me.

I know that that's technically the same structure that almost EVERY game follows, but for some reason RDR made it way too obvious for me. Maybe i just want to have the freedom to tackle story event how I want to and in what order I want, kinda like Fallout. At the first part of Red Dead I just wanted to go to that guys stronghold and take it down single handed, but I couldn't because I first had to sell snake oil and shoot random people for some random guy.

I just want a fun, interesting world to explore and do stuff on my own. (driving on sidewalk + Euphoria = fun forever).

What do you think it'll release? I would guess something like November of 2012.

Fall 2012 sounds right to me, barring a delay.

I do wonder about the gameplay though, a very popular GTA IV mod was the First Person mod, and FPS is the most popular genre in this day and age by far. So will they allow you to play the game in First Person mode if you wan to? Of course they won't do away with Third Person perspective, and they shouldn't, but something like how Oblivion did it is what I expect. Also, a lot of new gameplay standards have happened since GTAIV, will be interesting to see how GTA evolves.

Another thing I want to know is how their engine has evolved. I'm sure they've made some tweaks to it, so wanting to see that.

As someone who loved old adventure games like Sam and Max and Monkey Island, I loved LA Noire. It gave me the feeling of new age point and click adventure game, with action on the side. I hope the "Noire" franchise has long legs. I wouldn't mind an "NY Noire".

Also of note:

GTA3 and GTA: SA were both done on the same system.

All the features of San Andreas were done on a console with 32MB of RAM and a 3.2GB/second throughput on that RAM.

The 360 has 512MB of RAM and 20GB/sec throughput.

They'll be just fine.

Based on the logo, my three best guesses are Vegas, the GTA version of Washington DC, or back in Liberty City with an emphasis on the financial district.

Washington DC would be my pic, cause then they could have some stiff commentary about the financial melt-down, over-reaching power of corporations, corrupt politicians and the like.

Occupy Wallstreet, Rockstar Games style.

Rockstar will never, ever set another GTA outside of the USA.

My 2 requests: Use TBOGT as the template, and create the music in-house. I don't mind the radio stuff, but I wouldn't mind having a real soundtrack that plays during missions. RDR has some of the best music ever produced in a video game, so the talent is clearly there.

Yeah, I remember people laughing at rumours of BF3 having 64 players, jets and prone.
