Graph-Age: GAF membership growth since 2002

AstroLad said:
Man, this thread is such a setup for all those "GAF used to be so amazing" posts.

Same as it ever was.

I think this graph is a cry for mods to rate their ban rate to a level commensurate with the forum size. Banning now as often as back in 2004 merely allows 13 times as many trolls to exist.

Can PS2 Handle Sonic Adventure 2? Or even the original for that matter. I know it'd easily be able to push three times as many polygons and I'm not questioning the quality of the game(s), but can the PS2 currently push the rich and luscious textures featured in Sega's premiere mascot franchise.

In terms of platformers, Rayman 2 is the top of the heap for the PS2 and it's not really superior to the Dreamcast counterpart. So I was playing through Sonic Adventure and the demo for SA2, pondering if either were capable of being ported to the PS2 with textures intact.

Assuming the standards and behavior are the same, certainly. As much as people bitch about it, it really has been fairly consistent modding and standards that have kept the forum more or less the same afaic. There used to be some crazy characters back in the day though.

Derailment = ban.

You can't make a single topic without someone being all LOLZ JOKE.

GAF has always had the same amount of garbage except now we have the entire industry paying attention and there's quite a few more people posting these days. Oh and we're NEO.

Remember, it's a growth rate. Most likely, they just cracked down around E3 and didn't let anyone in.

You know, I actually agree. Posters change, trolls stay the same.

Kinda the same here. I joined early this year but even then I lurked like a stalker studying his prey in the wild myst of Afrikakakakakakakak.

Sorry

Because you are new and you don't know all the rules of the forum yet. For example if you knew everything about GAF you wouldn't had to ask that question or you would have PM'd a mod instead of going off topic in a thread.

wt? that isnt a question for a MOD. its a rhetorical question. i was stating a point. whos the newb?

So true :lol

But don't forget that in 2003 and 2004 a bunch of great memebers were dumped, which caused a bunch of great insiders to take a hike.

Now it's fucking LUKE SMITH DUR DUR DUR along with 20,000 other shitty members :lol

y r u beeing a nublet.

Uh, the reason for the spike in membership is because this site needs members in order to ensure it's survival, via ads and what not. Right before the uptick, this forum was always crashing and practically going the way of the dodo and the admins back then were VERY strict about letting new members in. It was basically a twice a year thing. Now I wouldn't be surprised if each day members are admitted. So the "forum must be interesting," and "places are dying" canards should be dismissed entirely. It's purely related to keeping this forum afloat.

Now you're just asking for an ass whipping...

As I do this I ponder the power of the "brotherhood" meme.

Off topic (well I guess this whole thread technically is), but I'm reading that 9/11 thread, wow ... it gives me chills going back and reading that almost 6 years after the fact.

dude, you aren't joking. i had just started reading the GAF because i was linked there from another forum simply because of the good videogame news and tidy gametalk. GAF was one of the sites i was visiting around the time of 9/11 and reading that old thread was crazy errie. i thought GAF was so cool back then. i used to read it all day with no input. IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A SOAP OPERA!!!someone linked to the old stuff a few months ago(?) asking about the DC/PS2 days. i read it like....wowww.

and for the longest i could not get into GAF. not even because i was waiting on 'judgement', but i didn't have a "GAF CERTIFIED VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS" and i was too lazy to set up a usable one. eventually the pull was too great and i had to get in. i still waited a good while to be processed though.

Someone said it earlier, but one thing I think you've seen over time is that as more gaming forums have gone under over time, more and more people take refuge here. That's at least what happened in my case. Seems like forever ago that I first stumbled upon GA's forums. Don't even remember when I switched from lurking to posting (originally under a different name).

Anyway, here's an oldie but a goodie...

January 2004

Nintendo Announces Dual-Screened Portable Game System; ``Mystery'' Product to Launch Page 1 2 3 4 5

It's always interesting to me seeing how far off (a chorus of people declaring it the Virtual Boy 2) and how spot on some people were, all based on almost nothing. I mean have to give soundwave credit (or at least I assumed unicron was soundwave, though I don't keep up with people's name changes over the years) for really putting himself out there on some pretty specific points, and actually getting them right.

He was expecting an N64 quality system with GBA compatibility for around $150, and despite what Nintendo said at the time, there would be no branching off of the handheld line - the DS would be the GBA's successor. You read all that now, and it's like "no shit", but you read the thread, and people could barely grasp the screen alignment being vertical (one of the few details Nintendo actually revealed), let alone going on to speculate about that other stuff.

No, the Virtual Boy had a lot more potential than this.

This... this... agh, I'm speechless.

Nah, your explanation is totally wrong. The reason GAF was always crashing and pretty stagnant in traffic was because it was being hosted on horribly anemic hardware on a closed system provided by gamesquad (1.4ghz pentium 4 and 512mb ram I think it was), saddled with shitty ads that were loading everyone up with spyware and popups. I had to use a custom hosts file on my PC that blocked out that garbage to even moderate the site without going insane from the spyware.

As for "going the way of the dodo," I have no idea why people are ignoring that there are NO DATA POINTS in that big downward line. That's not a downward trend, that's pre-crash data and post-crash data in sequence. Still, the site was not gaining popularity significantly from what I remember, because of the gamesquad probs.

The frequency of user admissions has zero relationship with keeping the forum afloat in the way you suggest. Admissions are still strictly controlled in order to prevent GAF from becoming a shithole, and there's currently a pretty long waiting period to get in most of the time. You do understand that a whole lot more guests view GAF than members? And that being a member doesn't magically increase ad revenue (in fact, guests are served an additional ad)? Yeah.

Looked through the Goodcow archive, and found the earliest post he has of mine was from 9/27/2000. I posted a lot more back then (3000 posts in a year? damn). It says I registered in June 1999 as "Duane" but I know I registered with a couple of different usernames before that. Maybe my memory is bad, but I remember the forum always having some sort of server/database problem all the way until NeoGAF. I think that's got a lot to do with the somewhat exclusive membership we had here in the past. And to be honest with you, this place was already unbearable at times back then. The stupidity has literally multiplied over the years. :(

Anyway, here's the earliest post I can remember. I thought my posting style changed a lot more than this:

Fück

Ok, now that that's out of my system, I don't think I'll be able to get my hands on a PS2 until January now. Ugh, what a freakin' burn that is. I've been counting on them hitting the 1M mark so I could waltz into a Target early in the morning and grab a system easily. This throws a wrench in the works for me. I HATE having to rush to pick up anything, so I'm not gonna go out at launch. Ugh, this has shades of Tickle Me Elmo all over it.

Where the hell are the units? Are they still pumping systems heavily into Japan? Sales have gotten down to reasonable levels over there now, so there's really no need anymore. What about Europe? If the US is having problems, I don't know what Europe can really expect.

Looks like my trip back to school shouldn't be a problem anymore. I'll just put all my money into kegs and fast women. Who needs video games when you've got fast women, right? PEACE.

And for the haters, note that I've been using PEACE. on here since at least '99, and god knows I've been using it on usenet since like '94. I will never change. :D

You're telling me that increasing membership had nothing to do with the future viability of this site? Come on, now. I remember when this forum was DONE with and had to solicit donations from its members just to come back up. Now, mind you, I don't have any problem with the uptick in membership; I rather like it. But I think it's disingenuous to say that simply because of new hardware you're able to deal with the added bandwith pressure, etc. This forum is kept alive by its ads and the members who view them. And, yea, I realize the guest s outnumber the actual members -- but, then, it's always been that way.

It took me years to get in! Years!! I'm an old man now, and my balls have dropped below the knee-line. Saints preserve me!

Meanwhile, my dipthong of a friend gets in in a week.

Was it me? Or my sub 12k-a-second dial-up?

Well they aren't working well at all. Because this place has been teetering on "shithole" for a long time. And it's not even the increase in the number of members thats the problem. Its the ridiculous amount of spam that people can get away with. And often times moderators encourage it.

If a really avid gamer who could add something to the conversations would discover GAF, he'd think everyone was a bunch of morons with the amount of cat pictures that get posted here. Find a thread you have no interest in? Why ignore it when you can get lots of laughs by derailing it with cat pictures. You'll be popular with everyone -- especially the moderators!

You're absolutely right. I have decided to call the new permabanning trolls strategy the "Neoxavean Doctrine," and guess what: you're the first inductee into an exclusive fan club created in its honor!

freudian slip?

It would be impossible to quantifiy, but I really wonder how much time and energy this place diverts from other obligations (work, school, sleep, whatever) on a regular basis. Like how many companies are paying a GAF tax...

Essentially, our detraction from society is what?
