Graph-Age: GAF membership growth since 2002

when was the actual split between gaming age and gaf? was there a real moment or just a drift?

I just realised why this forum is awsome:

1) Mods ban fanboys left, right and center. I seriously got tired of the fanboy invasion that was taking over in most gaming forums. gamespot being the worst.

2) All members need to have some sort of nasty, sarcastic sense of humour. if you're stuck up and boring...you suck at life

I would've joined a lot earlier but at the time i neglected to read the TOS about banning email addresses from certain providers.

I know you guys must dislike most newbies, but all this new traffic IS great news. Its good to see that there are so many people interested in posting here.

I dont remember when I joined(Like 1 1/2 years ago)but I lurked at GAF for years. I never joined, and when I did try, I could never get "in", so I gave up for years. I then tried again, on a whim knowing that there was no way in hell I would get a response.

I did. I almost shat my pants. It's one of those things that you dont remember, and you do it almost for a laugh, and when it actually works, your like, "holy shit man"

I loved this place just reading it over the years, and I felt like I got to know many of the posters just by reading what they had to say.

It was wierd. Tis place was like a news site that you read every day for years , but never bother to join.

I wish I had joined way back in the day now. Oh well.

I agree gamespot is the worst. Do not step into systemwars because LOGIC doesn' t exist there.

I'm a big newbie myself. I just joined within the last month.

I remembering checking out the old Gaf forums like back in 2000 and 2001 like a handful of times. Back then life was *very* different for me. Anyway, since I was always hearing about Gaf from some of the 1up guys and I kept reading news that originated from here I decided to join. And the fact that there are some very cool people here is a big plus. I lurked for like a week and then I signed up.

Looked through the Goodcow archive, and found the earliest post he has of mine was from 9/27/2000. I posted a lot more back then (3000 posts in a year? damn). It says I registered in June 1999 as "Duane" but I know I registered with a couple of different usernames before that. Maybe my memory is bad, but I remember the forum always having some sort of server/database problem all the way until NeoGAF. I think that's got a lot to do with the somewhat exclusive membership we had here in the past. And to be honest with you, this place was already unbearable at times back then. The stupidity has literally multiplied over the years. :(

Anyway, here's the earliest post I can remember. I thought my posting style changed a lot more than this:

Ah...the ill-conceived, ill-fated spinned.com. Sorry guys, I was the worst tech writer since...since...Panajev. :P Actually, he did fine. I was just lazy.

And for the haters, note that I've been using PEACE. on here since at least '99, and god knows I've been using it on usenet since like '94. I will never change. :D

Wait are you "Pimpin Dwayne" from the old Enix Forums?? and posts on the slimeknights and Woodus Forums?? if you are?? I thought I recognized you, as that username posted on almost every message board.

As for me, I migrated from IGN to here, as I could give a rat's ass now for the IGN boards, and I wasn't mesmerized by Jess Chobot's behind, that every IGN user worships her now. I remember visiting the Gaming-Age Forums back in 2003, but didn't bother to join, cuz of the shitty board layout and spyware, and nowadays I think being part of neogaf is an honour to most newbies as word gets around that it's the coolest gaming board to hang around, next to the LUE.

bizarre thread gravedigging...

damn he fixed it. makes sense now

edit: Grats Gaf! Gonna be over 300k before I become a member tho :\

I got a laugh out of OP being banned. I looked at his recent posts before he was banned and didn't see anything banworthy.

Anyways, yeah, this forum has gotten huge compared to what it once was.

Whenever I see an old post from a user who is banned, I assume they got banned for that specific comment.

How do you become a member? Is it after you have been a junior member for awhile? Or is it after you post however many times or something?

You have to PM a mod and ask to become a member. Bishoptl usually responds the fastest.

Here's an update, eight years later! Look at us!

If anyone has any more significant "callout" moments in GAF history let me now, I'll add it to this chart.

I think I signed up around the time it was still a private forum using my isp email (freemail sites were banned, are they still banned?) but had to change to a freemail when I moved and cancelled my interwebs. Can't believe how long it took for my submission to be accepted.

All the people in this thread from 2007 are 8 years older woooah

When I registered in early 2013 a "payed" mail account was still required. Or alternatively you could use a university mail account.

Rough head maths but with a total of over 150,000 members we will be losing several members a day. Unfortunately due to the age range involved and high male make up typically one gaffer a day will be committing suicide.

i wonder who bought the farm tonight?

When did we stop getting NPD numbers entirely?

I assume it was just something that happened in 2007 before they eventually gave up and just accepted some people were in fact going to leak NPD numbers.

Unless someone from the good ole days wants to report back. Maybe people were leaking the actual entire analyst reports, lord forbid.
