Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Which is funny because the entire point of using Lumen or any other realtime GI solution is so the game's lighting and shadows dont break as soon as a table or a box or any other prop is moved.

I remember how last gen we all blamed the jaguar CPUs for the lack of physics and destruction in PS4 gen games. Then Zelda ToTK came out with better physics and we assumed it was because of baked lighting solutions that might break shadows and lighting.

Nope, it was just the devs. Good old fashioned lazy devs.
It was always a bullshit excuse, nothing more

DICE awards were held yesterday. These are awards voted on almost entire by Developers and industry people. So it's curious to see just what the industry thinks its best games are.

Best game went to Astro Bot.
Best Technical Achievement also went to Astro Bot.
Best Game Design also went to Astro Bot.

Silent Hill 2, Black Myth and several other high end games were not even nominated for the Technical Achievement award and Astrobot beat out Hellblade 2.

Outstanding Technical Achievement

  • Astro Bot by Team ASOBI (Winner)
  • Batman: Arkham Shadow by Camouflaj
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle by MachineGames
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II by Ninja Theory
  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 by Saber Interactive

I think this is a microcosm of why the industry seems to have stagnated this gen, and why game design and graphics are in a state of arrested development. The developer's priorities are all fucked up. I dont mind platformers winning game design if they are doing something completely new and original. Astrobot is as basic as it gets. As for best technical achivement, im guessing it won because of the physics implementation but having played well over half the game now, the physics are literally just for show. They dont add anything to the gameplay. They are salad dressing at best. It wouldve been amazing to finally get a physics driven platformer but this isnt it.

And we want next gen graphics from these people? A big fucking LOL.
What a fucking joke, Astro Bot really won this? Ridiculous, the people making our games ladies and gentlemen.

bit offtopic but remember infamous john's tweet about hogwarts and how it sucks and he wont cover it coz its open world, avoved seems pretty open world to me too, yet its fine to cover it somehow ;D

Oh yes, that was Always bullshit. He covered open world games like Horizon, ghost of tsushima, death stranding, days gone, Horizon fw, gow ragnorak. And gave HFW, Death Stranding and Avatar his graphics GOTY in 2019, 2022 and 2023.

Playing Avowed and it is probably one of the ugliest ue5 game i ever played.

Once again, cherry picked pics looks nothing like the real game on a tv.
Yeah, played the intro last night. It's shockingly mid for a UE5 game. Yes, the indoor areas without direct sunlight are properly shaded, yes, the bricks look super detailed and properly tessellated but the third person animations are dogshit and i dont think the lighting is all that great. the area looks virtually identical to the beach area in Dragon Age and that looked better. will try to finish the prologue today, im guessing the open world will look better.

Bioware gets a lot of shit and rightfully so, but their animations and combat are in a league of their own compared to these other WRPGs which are utter trash in that department. Bethesda, obsidian, Warhorse, even CD Project doesnt even come close to matching the animation work and combat mechanics of Bioware games.

P.S The character creator is super lame too. I was like am i defaulted to low settings or something? Dragon Age, Demon Souls, Dragons Dogma all had way better character models in the character creator.

Went back to Kingdom Come 2 because FF7 forced me to play as a cat pushing around boxes for two hours.

Very pretty vistas. I just dont like when you actually get into the forest but the fields are majestic. They remind me of HFW but with a more realistic art style. RDR2 as well, but RDR2 didnt have grass this tall and trees that looked this good from afar.

OK, got to the first open world in Avowed and wow, art style aside, this is an excellent showcase for UE5's nanite implementation. The city has some great asset quality for pretty much every single asset. there is a great draw distance and no pop-in. oddly enough, i did see some pop-in once you leave the city but its a big brush here and there, there is no cascading pop-in for grass or bricks or other world items like in Horizon, Cyberpunk and other open world games last gen. It's all so seamless I love it. My brain cant process not seeing cascading shadow or detail pop-in. It's beautiful.

Lighting is ok. I really dont care for the art style. Maybe the lack of HDR on PC is hurting it. It's fairly accurate unlike say HFW or FF7 Rebirth, but their art direction is going for slightly cartoony art style and while some people might like it, i prefer more realistic lighting. Still, its competent and better than most last gen games especially when combined with the amazing nanite implementation.

Isn’t it sad than 4 years after; forbidden west, a cross gen game, is the only true PS first party game which keeps being considered next gen looking enough to still talk about it ?

Every times someone posts a gif or screen of this game, that makes me very sad
Death Stranding 2 should change that hopefully. The one game that can properly show off the Decima engine this generation

Scope over graphic but it looks good

It's actually very ambitious graphically. Massive Draw Distance and lots of NPCs. I would be surprised if it hits 1080p on the base PS5 at 30 fps.

Kingdom Come 2 already hits 1440p 30 fps. Those draw distances and grass blades dont come cheap. And this game looks far bigger in scope than KCD2. Cities look way better too.

SlimySnake SlimySnake you would love this.

Absolutely mind boggling.

This is insane lmao.

I would love to know what happened here. Did all the talent just get up and leave the industry? Why did they regress? Shouldn’t they be at least where they were 11 years ago if all the talent did leave?

Twitter is full of mlb the show nuthuggers just praising dumb gameplay features completely ignoring how it looks worse than most ps4 era sports games like nba.

I am fine though. I play a true next Gen looking sports game every day and it still blows me away after 3 months of playtime. Thank you UE5 and Konami.

Some more Kingcom Come Deliverance 2 on PC in 4K Ultrawide with DLDSR, DLSS and Reshade, but this thime with RenoDX HDR Mod instead of RTX HDR which has better results:

I feel like this game could use a photorealistic reshade like ones for Witcher 3. It is going for somewhat realistic art direction but it still like cartoony. Still gorgeous but just kind of off. Lighting itself is fine. I like that the blades of grass dont just aborb sunlight and reflect it back. I like the distant trees and how beautifully shaded they are. By far the most realistic looking thing in the game. Indirect lighting indoors is fine and not last gen like it is in so many cross Gen. open world games. Absolutely remarkable draw distance. Both for shadows and pop in.

And yet i just can’t shake the cross gen feeling with this game. I know i should be more grateful but i feel like the game is almost there. It’s so close.

But the scope is too big to have horizon characters or wukong locations.

Approaching 4.5 years and it’s a damn pathetic state of affairs. No matter how much money these companies make, these are the worst Xbox and PlayStation consoles of all time.

It has to be DEI, what else could it be?

seriously. ff7 rebirth bloat is criminal. They should've just added an option to skip that whole dungeon

Everywhere i look i see white dudes like Herman, Cory, Philbo, Neil Druckmann , Ken Levine, running studios. Besides, dei is still relatively new and at best they hired a bunch of rookies who are in no way in charge of making big decisions like targeting native 4k, removing jersey physics, changing the entire lighting model and skin shading and other stuff that YouTuber pointed out in nba. This is just incompetence at the top.

Japan didn’t do any DEI stuff and their studios can’t create a next Gen game to save their lives. Even Kojima who used to literally set the bar with games like mgs2 and mgs4 at the start of those generations is now making a fairly mediocre looking next Gen only title 5 years into this gen.

SlimySnake

Flashless at the Golden Globes
I don`t think incompetence is the right word. Those executives just deem certain quality standards as "good enough" and if stuff sells while you saved on production costs who`s going to blame you aside from some boarddwellers demanding fotorealistic eye candy?
Yeah, Insomniac's hack had some emails or presentations talking about how increasing graphics fidelity by 2x wont really show up on the screen and wont necessarily increase sales, or something to that effect so im sure there is some of that. it seems Sony studios like Sucker Punch, ND, and Insomniac have all bought into that philosophy. Kojima as well. Though he recently said that he wanted Death Stranding 1 to be 60 fps so maybe he's just focused on 60 fps for DS2, hence the smallish leap.

But NBA gutting the jersey physics, downgrading their lighting engine, and completely fucking up the sweat effects in an effort to upgrade skin shaders is simply incompetence. Probably at a high level. Some guy at the top thought upgrading lighting was the way to go but they completely fumbled and ended up removing all the cool lighting effects they had built up last gen. Honestly, it could also be a focus on native 4k which is costly and thats probably why all those fancy physics and atmospheric effects are pretty much gone now. Everyone in the crowd wearing plaid trousers is simply hilarious. I would love to be a fly on the wall where it was decided fans would not wear team jerseys and instead dress up like gay golfers.

At least they were trying to upgrade stuff. MLB The Show devs arent even trying. Their game looks like a ps3 game in comparison to NBA2k14.

Looks decent visually, I wonder what performance and image quality will be like on consoles. Curious about what version of UE5 they're using too.

Another L for UE5. Avowed has the most lifeless world of any AAA RPG this generation. UE5 can't seem to process shit. Non-enemy NPC's are literally glued to the ground and barely move. Enemies have very small designated zones in which they can't leave. And The developers had to delay this average looking game to get it running at 60fps on Series X and it is still stuck on 30fps on Series S

There are so many games in development on UE5. If Epic can't figure this shit out, this industry is screwed for years to come

It looks good for a f2p campaign experience. Still feels like a Chinese copy, though.

Whenever I see this I am always reminded of what an absolute giga nerd Linneman is. He made himself look a complete phony with this, and just a petty little c***.

Hogwarts has some rough edges, but the visual scope of the thing overall is frequently breathtaking. Particularly impressive knowing it's UE4.

I must have missed all these great assets in the city, the game continue to look painfully ok at best.

This is from the docks in the very first post-prologue area in the game. I was really impressed with how detailed the ships look. Water looks great too.

lol i am sure the npcs can move in UE5 games. this is on the developers. The matrix demo had like 35k NPCs or something.

the game is actually very polished for a UE5 game. it has above average visuals. no pop-in. no shitty shadows. great asset quality. the NPCs being trash is on obsidian.

Dude i'm playing the game maxed out and you know i don't trust gifs, everything look flawless in gif format.

If you zoom on all of that the materials\geometry are just fine, nothing miracolous or incredible about them, while i was playing i never thought "wow look at this super realistic wood or metal or rocks", not once.

Do you think that an asset man like doesn't zoom on everything to check the details in every damn game i play? :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

UE5=lifeless beautiful worlds. No UE5 game has proven otherwise. And It's a hard to blame Obsidian, when 5 years ago, they released TOW, which had much more interactivity between NPC's. It wasn't great by any means, but in comparison to Avowed, it is night and day. Now, with Microsoft's backing, Obsidian can't figure out how to get a group of NPCs to walk around a city?

There is very clearly a stability issue that many developers are running into using UE5

Would you say Konami’s Professional Baseball Spirits is the best looking sports game this generation?

Anyone played lost records: bloom and rage? I've got to say, I'm surprisingly very impressed with the visuals. UE5 definitely being used well, asset and material quality is very high and the lighting is nice too. Character rendering is strong, but the lip sync and animation is pretty weak. I'll try and get some screenshots posted, but it genuinely reminds me of a pre-rendered animated movies in some scenes. Image quality is decent for a ps5 ue5 game too.

Ridicolous.

Starfield is a shadow of what skyrim was in term of interactivity and npcs and it is made with an upgraded version of the same engine.
Kingmakers has a shitload of npcs on screen and advanced physics and destruction and it's an ue5 game.

It's a dev thing, not an engine thing.

My point exactly. Creation engine improved upon many things since Skyrim and Fallout 4, mostly in graphics and lighting. There are aspects of Starfield that look legit next-gen, but the game engine seemingly had to sacrifice in other areas(Limited interactivity, no dismemberment ect). UE5 is clearly a massive issue for developers. UE5 games are having problems that UE4 games didn't

And I'm not sure how real a game Kingmakers is. It looks like a massive asset flip. Did some quick Google of the developer and can't find much on them. It is supposed to release Q1 of this year. That was last known info about this game that I could find

Don't pre-order!
