Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

i was always a big proponent of 14 tflops because i knew from experience that RT was really fucking heavy. I was running control at 864p internal upscaled to 1440p just to hit 60 fps on a 2080. Which is what the PS5 ended up being. i have no idea why cerny and sony decided that they needed to sell a $399 console in late 2020. its not 1994. Shouldve been $599 and it wouldve still sold out.

Now we have the Pro which is effectively a 14.5 tflops console and runs most games relatively well with RT at 60 fps, but PSSR is trash right now and even though its upscaling from 1080p, it doesnt really look like what we see on PC with DLSS.

Just one fuck up after another by Cerny.
Him and Sony were put in an impossible situation. Going from 1080p to 4k, moving forward with performance mode being standardized, then also the rise of RT/PT, and making it cost around 500-600 all at the same time?

There was just no way man.

I know most people here will buy Ghosts. (I am going to skip it, i cant sanction this buffoonery.)

can someone please gif or screenshot the temples or houses, i want to compare them against the amazing asset quality of AC Shadow's temples.

The more i see of Yotei the more i lean towards it being a significant upgrade. Like others have said, the marketing was utterly shit. AC Shadows demolishes Yotei with geometry, but, Yotei bests AC Shadows in open landscape areas with much more dense and overall convincing landscape. It's breathtaking really and the lighting upgrade really shows in these areas. I downloaded the 4k HDR upload from DF and watched it on the Oled and its beautiful. Oh and the cutscenes seem to be incredible as well.

Tech-wise I would give the edge to Shadows easily but when the art and tech gel together in these open landscapes I would say Yotei can be the best looking 1st party game from Sony this gen. I know that's not saying much for most people. All I'm saying is it's definitely not clear cut in all areas between Shadows and Yotei.

Also, why is it that this offscreen capture is doing sooo many favors for the visuals? It looks very current gen here.

I don't understand the infatuation with ACS. They lose a massive amount of points with their balanced mode (only 40fps) and PSSR implementation for how terrible distant foliage looks and overall flickering when looking at anything on the horizon. If GOY can achieve a stable image at 60 fps with solid PSSR performance and RT then it's a win. I'm forced to play ACS in quality mode which does look amazing most of time but it's inconsistent especially during the winter season with all the snow. Looking forward to seeing GOY on an OLED next week.

Exactly! I am actually shocked by the people's gameplay material so far, it looks way better or at least gives way better impression than the trailer ever did or could! The opening sequence here looks breathtaking!

We've upgraded from 240p GIFs to off screen recordings. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Off-screen capture is basically free downsampling and it boosts contrast, while hiding any imperfection.

Same with small gifs.

I hate the lighting in this gif. Ds2 has better lighting.

If this is what Japan looks like in real life I'm never going there. We have better grass fields in Ohio and Ohio is literally the anus of America.

I think something is lost in ac shadows with pssr. This is something ive noticed in a few games actually.. god of war ragnarok is one. This image has less "depth" or something ...it's subtle and can't put my finger on it exactly....i felt this with alan wake and baulders gate as well

Because the PC version exists

if plainsong village was in any japanese\beloved game people would praise the shit out of it, but it's horizon so it's ugly and stinky by default

Like cmon...
Horizon II is still the best looking game of the gen imo considering the scale of the open world. Even the NPC's shit on the animation quality of most games main characters.

My issue with Horizon is its whole universe is boring and bland with a done to death story to the poor writing to the lore with a horrendously annoying main character as a cherry on top.

Of all the franchises Sony could chose to throw their multimedia hat into it should not have been Horizon lol. It's Sci-Fi channel level movie of the night nonsense. And it doesn't sell well either. Most of the originals sales were at bargain bin prices and the sequel stopped selling at full price after the same few million copies the original did which in the current industry isn't a third of what is needed.

It's a nice leap over Tsushima but still falls behind the best looking games of today.

It's not bad. Again, I'll be interested to see how good it looks on PC as it could really shine there.
lol this looks like dlc. nice leap? spiderman 2 was a nice leap. HFW was a nice leap. this is literally the same game.
