Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Kinda unfair to compare only the area where plague has an advantage.

Maybe they are just not as good woth character rendering and especially faces?

Look at space marine 2, great looking locations, early ps4 human models and faces, and they are clearly aiming for realistic graphic on that game.
PT Requiem was not attempting to have the most realistic / accurate characters....

This look like an attempt of realism if you ask me, just one that fell short...

If we use this excuse then all the ubisoft games like shadows or outlaws can use the same excuse, they were only trying to have hyper realistic locations with stylized characters alright...

I criticize what i see dude and characters in ds2 are straight up much better, i don't really care for the reasons, spiderman 2 probably use a stylized style for its characters aswell and we still dogpiled that game in here because the rest of the graphic try to be realistic so there is a whiplash.

Wouldn't have fooled me for even a microsecond.
Well like i said, if the rest of your graphic is realistic, having stylized character is kinda of a whiplash to me and i don't like it.

If you open a public poll, many people are not gonna care what the devs intention are, they are gonna make you notice that ds2 models destroy requiem models, you can't open a graphic contest and only judge one aspect of graphic, it's not how it work.
You judge all the graphic, intentions or not.

Open a poll with a first post where you say that requiem look much better than ds2.

5 post in and you are gonna have people posting characters comparisons, don't be mad at me, be mad at how graphic contests work.
???

I'm not mad at you at all.
This isn't some competition and I don't care about stupid polls lol

Its not just Tim Sweeney. We get checks from Ubisoft massive, Ubisoft Quebec, remedy, rockstar, Respawn, cd project, and several other studios who didn't use ue5 and still managed to produce next gen graphics.
Probably because they also focus development on pc. None games of these studios looks mindblowing on base ps5 (on pro for a moment some even worse ;d) and definitely not better than apparently disappointing graphically Forbidden West, Ratchet, Demon Souls or DS2. If sony studios dont bring up technologoy in their engines in ps6 era then I would agree criticism is justified as then hardware will be up there but for now Cyberpunk, Alan wake 2, SIlent Hill 2, Outlaws or other apparently nextgen games doesnt look anything special on ps5 or xsx.

I mean, look at the quotes i posted, do you see people saying "best console graphic", no they say best graphic of all time, so the comparison with pc is fair game if you ask me.

You wanna have the title of best graphic ever when the game is not out yet on pc, you get the pc comparison.

And let's not forget the amount of console fanboys that shit on pc saying 3000 dollars pc to barely see any difference, so i guess the difference is actually visible depend on the narrative you are supporting uh...

(Not talking specifically about you, just a generic rant)

I didnt suggest not to include pc in this topic ;d But imo its normal that sony with their games target their base console not some future hypothetical pc conversion on beast machine.

They should target harder then, past gens sony games were always compared to pc games because they were head to head in many occasion, many people still think that tlou2 look better than cyberpunk ffs, what changed in this gen?

How can tsushima 2 look sensibly less impressive than a 3 years old drossgen on the same machine? How can people even think to compare the damn plague tale 2 with a sony AAA made by kojima, AA devs at their first game doing better than sony...

This shit should not exist, this is why we are flabbergasted, dude read this topic at the beginning of the gen, we were all sure that sony was about to dislocate jaws, but things changed.

It means engines technology move up and its easier to do very good graphcis but also Asobo Studio is 300 people team, not that small + yes graphicaly is great but you see budget cuts with poor animations and gameplay mechanics roughness. Do you play these games or only watch screens ?

Let's just say that you really picked the wrong dude to sing praises about death stranding gameplay or animations, and let's leave at that :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

You guys are way off. Requiem was made in 3 years on a tiny budget compared to DS2 that was made in 6 years on a huge budget. The fact that it's even an argument which looks better is embarrassing. Imo Requiem wins for consistency in fidelity, while DS2 wins in cutscenes and set pieces. It's even more embarrassing that a new Plague game is about to release in a year and that game is way ahead of anything DS2 can master, maybe besides cutscenes of course.

Most of DS2's budget was wasted on high profile actors/actresses really

Been playing DS2 for 2+ hours on a QD oled + PS5 pro, so it can hardly look better. While I'll stand by what I said about the fact that it was among the most beautiful PS5 games to date, it's not as impressive as I originally thought it would be.
Mid/long distance detail is STILL a problem.

Yeah it's just inconsistent sadly. Some areas got more attention than others, like the opening mountain scene.

I was harsh on Plague's tale requiem back when it first came out because the lighting looked more UE4 than UE5, but it definitely has some next gen moments. Very high level of detail in almost every area and the lighting is leagues ahead of what im seeing in DS2 during gameplay.

Now character models and cutscenes, yes, DS2 is leagues ahead. I dont know what kind of black magic is letting them push this level of fidelity. but its very extraordinary.

I havent played many third party games on my ps5 this gen. only the exclusives like ff16, ff7 rebirth, and sony first party games. But i recently bought robocop which looked fairly similar to the pc version. at least in quality mode. Callisto looked virtually identical to the PC version. at least in quality mode.

i think people on PS5 are playing these games at 60 fps and since they either drop RT support in performance modes, or drop to 864p (if not 720p) in performance modes with RT or lumen, people get confused when they see these high res PS5 first party games that typically land in the 1440p 60 fps range. Returnal and Spiderman 2 being the exception of course.

DF reviewed both Avatar and AC Shadows on consoles first. They are built for consoles with PS5 being the lead platform.

another last gen 2A game A Plague Tale: Requiem

Yes it looks great even today, played the first game and got the platinum. Hyped for Requiem.
Like i said I didnt played Requiem yet so idk about the gameplay improvements BUT, does nobody ever got the idea that theres so much less gameplay elements and features compared to DS2???
DS2 offers you much more deeper gameplay and have to sacrifice some graphical features. Theres always balance between gameplay and graphics. Only GTA or other really talented and big bugget/more time to develop a game developer are able to achieve both epic standards.

I think people should wait to go deep in Australia before judging the game too much.

First it's technically very sound (ultra sharp IQ - one of the best ever on Pro-, constant 60fps, non existent loading times, very strong HDR implementation)

Second it has the best cutscenes in the business

Third, while world geometry is lacking, some models are super detailed (eg the ship), way beyond what we had on PS4

Fourth in some later sections in Australia under the right lighting conditions it can look like the most beautiful game ever made. Sure it's no RT, but it must have one if not the best day night cycle in any games. When sun rises or sunsets and you are looking at the distance it's drop dead gorgeous

Never played this game, but I would say Horizon has comparable fidelity based on the gifs you posted.

Lighting is definitely better compared to DS1, as is sub surface scattering particularly for Sam. However the face animation doesn't look very good for current gen. TLOU2 and Horizon have much better facial animation. I think it was a mistake for them to go with Metahuman.

Australia looks better even from the start, Mexico is super small and I guess team didn't put much effort. Game has really good HDR and image quality on Pro is really nice, game can look quite amazing in places.

Well, didnt HB2 got the same character models for both cutscenes and gameplay?

In HB2 it would make more sense, close camera angle and game had many transitions from cutscenes to gameplay and vice versa. For game like DS2 it wouldn't make sense to use cutscene model with full LOD for gameplay. Many games switch to cutscenes models when using photo mode.

Didnt bother with asasin after reviews but checked Avatar that apprently looks nextgen comparing to Foribden West on ps5 and after laugh I understand I paid 70$ for game I dont want to play just to check graphics and be disappointed (btw looks defenitly top notch but saying is next gen and forbidden west is dissapointment on ps5 its more than double standards of hypocrisy)

Hfw has issues but when it came out, it was the best looking game out there. The only reason why some might consider it disappointing was because it was cross gen and could've looked way better.

In fact i think ds2 looks worse than hfw in many ways.

I can agree with that but for sure its more photorealistic and has better character models (John in df video sum it good that horizon to forbiden was bigger jump than ds1 to ds2 but also we have to keep in mind that ds1 look much better thar horizon1)

Still should've used hero lighting. Its supported in the engine. It was in horizon fw 3 years ago. they had the rendering budget.

All third person games should have that. it makes a huge difference.

Hero lighting is kind of whack imo. Makes the model look like it doesn't belong in the environment around them. By design I know, but in terms of realism and cohesion, having certain objects be lit by "fake" lights is a slight negative i feel.

Yeah i reached australia and nothing changed graphically wise and the game continue to feel like ds1.1 gameplay wise.

Cutscene are great but they still lose against hb2 characters, those are on an even higher level, just check the teeth on senua and fragile as an example.

Getting deeper into Australia and still not feeling it. This feels very last Gen.

You are broken my friend.
This is probably the best looking / visually most impressive game ever.
You are looking too technically at it. Look at the whole picture.

Who cares if It's using rt. it's even more impressive for not using it. Your forgot what matters in appreciating graphics anymore.
IMO it looks better than any Chinese ue5 slop. These look very impressively at first glance but have heavy ue5 feel.
And it looks better than hellblade 2 for the same reason. Hellblade2 was more uncanny and very small in scope. I got the over detailed ue5 look from it.

I think it looks incredible. Maybe not technically better than acs but I am soooo much beyond caring about any technicality. The end result is what matters. And yes. It looks similar to ds1 because that game looked great :p

Honestly most games look great nowadays. We are comparing art directions…. Kojima just knows how to place lights in cutscenes.

I am looking at the whole picture. I see dated textures, dated lighting, dated draw distance, dated geometry.

I'm glad you are enjoying it, but this is all extremely underwhelming to me. I only bring up the technical stuff to point out flaws that have been fixed by other games this Gen due to those games utilizing rt and mesh shaders. I'm not demanding they use it. I'm simply saying we wouldn't be seeing these dated visuals if they had implemented rt and msg shaders.

Alan wake 2 doesnt use rtgi. It looks stunning. Same goes for ff16, callisto, plagues tale, demon souls, ratchet and to a lesser extent hfw. Those games are simply using a much higher quality baked lighting model. Aw2 specifically uses volumetrics to an amazing effect in its massive outdoor areas. All those games are very heavy despite not using rtgi because the rendering budget was spent improving the visual fidelty. This game simply doesn't push anything. Hence the 1440p 60 fps target.

Eugh, the shadows in your second pic look nasty, especially on those rock faces. I think devs should push for RT shadows in their quality modes at the very least. They make such a big difference in having all the objects in a scene look like they belong there and by extension having an overall more cohesive final image.

DS2 looks good enough, but the image quality and stable framerate is much more important to me, than some RT effects. So i prefer DS2 over any UE5 game on console that runs at 800p with heavy drops. The IQ here is PRISTINE and sadly this is not a common thing this generation
