Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Yes, TAA works better as an AA solution than SMAA. But it's side effects are much worse.
And because SMAA doesn't ruin image quality, especially in motion, it's the better option of the 2.

DLSS4 and FSR4, though having the same basis as TAA, have results that are so much better, than they could almost be considered different technologies.

Between SMAA and TAA, TAA is the clear winner. We can debate whether certain TAA implementations are better or worse, but for anyone bothered by aliasing, especially specular aliasing, SMAA is essentially useless. It doesn't do shit

I'll take some blurring over jaggies any day of the week.

In the end it's about what bothers you more: shit ton of aliasing (shader aliasing is the worst) or blurred image with potential for ghosting artifacts. For me it's the first thing.

But DLSS4 (FSR4 as well) fixes most of the TAA issues and present image with great sharpness (but not oversharpened), reduced (or zero) ghosting and good anti aliasing.

no one tell him a Ubisoft studio was the first to do motion matching.

I really like the mocapped animations in AC Shadows as well. Yes, they are all canned but there are so so many of them.

Logging in to see what they've done here. The Behind the Scenes preview footage showed them adding a lot of different animations promising to rework the whole game from scratch. So its a bit odd to see the floaty animations.
And how many games have they used motion matching in? Is it still just the single one after almost an entire decade? And are the results significantly worse than the other studio that has used motion matching?

Shame that the game is so fucking boring
I got to the second area, the savannah, and realized that the gameplay was just more of the exact same stuff. And it would continue in that way when I opened the other areas so I gave up. The first area was somewhat fun if repetetive. The NPCs were as interesting as dried paint though. One of the most gorgeous games on PS5.

You people must have sharpness set to 3000, i haven't used AA in years...all my past 3-4 tv with sharp at 0 had basically no jaggies in most games.

Last 2 with jaggies were probably wukong and horizon 2 at launch that were razor edge sharpened to a fault...

But when i used it, smaa was my way to go.
You don't use dlss?

Some third person gifs of Avatar. It's pretty cool to see just how much more you can actually see in every frame thanks to the third person view. yes, its not intimate or immersive or whatever you want to call the first person view, but i feel like im much more grounded in the world now thanks to having my character be an actual part of the scenery.

Oh and i ran into a random rock with some great detail and textures. Reminded of that ridiculous DF screenshot of blurry rocks thats posted here as proof that avatar has poor rocks. yeah, right.

Standard TAA is still soft and blurry in motion even at 4k. DLSS is way better
the thing with TAA is that i honestly havent used it much since 2016 when checkerboarding came out on the ps4 pro.

Then i got an rtx card in early 2019 and dlss made TAA extinct. The only games ive played with TAA on were RDR2 and Shadow of Tomb Raider on the X1X which were native 4k and looked absolutely fucking pristine. Even Callisto on the PS5 which i think uses TAAU to upscale from 1440-1512p is pretty damn crisp.

I tried playing RDR2 at native 4k without any AA and it looked worse than DriveClub and Batman AK look on 4k screens. Just an extreme eyesore. If console gamers dont have DLSS or FSR or TSR to fall back on, i say TAA is the best solution. Batman AK at native 4k on PC looks perfectly fine and Im guessing it uses TAA.

So yes, Nintendo should be using TAA. That shimmering is way worse than any soft look the game might have which is unlikely anyway since the internal resolutions on these switch 1 games is so high.

Some more screenshots from Dying Light: The Beast in 4K Ultrawide (5160*2160 with DLDSR), Raytracing, DLSS 4 and Reshade on PC, this game is absolutely beautiful and full of details, almost photorealisitc in some scenes.
The Raytracing update for PC recently changed the visuals dramatically.

I'm more talking about pure AA methods, taa, fxaa, smaa, etc.

I consider dlss an upscaling method to improve resolution more than an AA tool to get rid of jaggies.

I don't use AA even when i play native 4k in the few games without dlss except for very rare cases.

Nintendo really shot themselves in the foot having MP4 as some kind of showcase for the power of Switch 2. I know it's actually a Switch 1 game, but the general audiences don't. They should really have stopped Retro from inserting the desert hub area. I would have vastly preferred a spaceship cutscene
I cannot understand how metroid looks so bad (i understand those desert shots are not representative but still), when Tear of a kingdom, another switch 1 game that was ported to switch 2, looks good (and even great in comparison). Is it only the art that makes it look so much better ?

God Bless China for pushing this industry forward. This looks fantastic. Finally a war game with more than 5 characters on screen. The visuals are fantastic despite the high NPC counts. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from a big war game with lots of explosions and smoke effects. It is basically anti COD and BF. Western studios have forgotten how to do war games despite all the fancy new GPUs and CPUs at their disposal. Thank god for China.

Here is another Chinese studio doing things a western studio would never even dream of doing. Yes, it doesnt have fancy graphics, but look at the interactivity, the sheer originality in gameplay mechanics, and those setpieces that we expected Sony studios to do this gen. Just incredible stuff from China.

Looks like Tomb Raider is getting revealed at the TGA. Really excited to see what an AAA studio besides CD Project can do with UE5. So far its mostly been smaller studios.

It's also open world. So lets hope they are using UE5.6.

The animation looks janky and the gameplay looks very on-rails. Need to see more, but yeah China seems to actually be putting in effort in stark contrast to western devs who are just making more ps4 era games.

They dont need help. They are just getting paid by Nintendo to praise the game. Digital Foundry is not a reliable source of objective information anymore

Simple as that.

Well the question is was it ever? Nowadays, whenever Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft is releasing a first party game, John gets ready with his deep dive into the visuals of the game. It's almost like clock work.

Then once a small 3rd party or a company that's popular to hate on releases a game, they pummel them down in the visuals department. Usually, that's the formula except for games they like for example, Penny's Big Breakaway.

That first year university looking game project that John was glazing.

Another terrible DF review was a couple weeks ago with Stalker 2 on the "Pro". They praised the port and visuals and gave it their stamp of approval, now the internet thinks yet another shitty console port is ij good shape, when that can't be further from the truth. Even in Performance mode the game is a blurry mess in movement. Whatever upscaler they use combined with whatever motion blur they're using creates this smearing and awful blurring on all background objects. There is also lots of visual artifacts, terrible lod management, messed up gamma, etc

I don't know if it's just the Pro that has this smearing issue but when I played it on Gamepass a year ago on SX i don't remember it having that issue. DF is rrsponsible for quite a few games having great reputations that are completely undeserved. In terms of MP4 ....im more inclined to agree that they did good work, even if the graphics are ultimately underwhelming for a MP game on Switch 2 because it's very smooth and polished at 60 and even 120 fps in handheld mode.

in other news Skyrim just got a 30 fps Switch 2 version! Seriously I hate these devs with a passion. Publishers more so but the incompetence of devs knows no bounds. Been saying it for so long now but console gamers in particular are treated like absolute shit whereas PC they know they can't get away with it.

That looked epic as fuck, if a bit shoddy.

I didnt realize how much they were glazing until the start of this gen. I thought the glazing of PS4 games was warranted last gen because they were genuinely the best looking games out there. But then the cross gen Sony era started and they didnt stop the glazing. Forza Horizon 5 was the same. Literally showed two screenshots, one with tire marks and the other without and called it the next gen difference. Insane.

I attribute it to fandom and toxic positivity. They dont want to burn bridges with the biggest studios, especially now that they get devs to show up for interviews after the reviews. Just look at the Sucker Punch interview. Like dude, why even have those guys on? They didnt even try. But lots of glazing was done in the review which got them a free follow up. Suck enough dick and you will get access to devs as well.

Lets not forget all those videos of MIRACLE Switch ports last gen by these buffoons. The games looked like dogshit. Ran at 360p. Were missing all the features that made them look PS4 gen and they still praised them like they were miracles, literally.

And when games do come along that are pushing next gen features, all they can talk about is image quality in the performance modes. Barely giving credit to the outstanding visuals in quality modes where games are meant to be played. Garbage analysis from a bunch of fanboys who dont have any balls to call out these famous studios for releasing last gen and in Nitnendo's case 2 gen old titles.

I mean for a 60 FPS Switch 1 game it looks good, but still dated af with the corridor levels and super low poly count.

man ray tracing really saves this game. i saw reviews of this game back when it came out and it looked like the ugliest game ive seen in years. but now with the ray tracing patch, it doesnt look too bad. simply because it looks more accurate. i still dont like the art style outdoors.

Man March is looking insane.
RE9 (Technically February. 27th)
Saros
Crimson Desert
James Bond
And I guess Half Life 3 if all these leakers are correct.

My guess is James Bond comes out on top, but Crimson Desert and RE9 PC ports impress more due to more advanced ray tracing features like path tracing in RE9.

If Half Life 3 is indeed real, im not expecting too much from it from the graphics front. My guess is that they will push physics a lot more than pure visuals.

UC4 only had two house location in this quality, rest of the game has shit ton of issues with lighting (still looks good overall).

And if you don't use tiny screenshots and look closer at UE4, you see some poor textures, simple objects and low res cube maps:

Their previous analysis of Stalker 2 on PS5 and XSX was also sub par.
I was suprised to find out that the performance mode, apart of lower res andfoliage LOD, also suffered from massively downgraded atmospherics and lighting/color grading. At times it looks like a different game between 30 and 60fps modes.

Are we seriously comparing baked scenes with something that's using RT? Might as well throw in the Valve VR environment demos then.

I dont even know why people post those U4 prologue screenshots. the real game does not look anything like that. there are plenty of interiors in that game that dont look anything like the prologue. hell, the house Drake and Elena live in at the start of the game doesnt even come close to these beach houses which look straight up pre-rendered.

Dying Light the Beast has the same exact problems as TLOU2's interiors. Just fugly lighting that make textures and materials look even worse. Then the game got an RT pass and those same interiors all of a sudden came alive with proper AO grounding each object, and proper reflections giving each material a much more realistic look. ND had the chance to add RTGI to their game with this new PS5 sku and blew it.

I too am impressed by a lot of new games i play. I was looking at some of my ps3 era screenshots on Steam just last night and most games this gen are a massive leap over it. That said, there is positivity and there is toxic positivity. There is absolutely no reason to vax lyrical about everything. Sometimes just say it looks ok and move on. I championed Mafia Old Country here for like a year but then the game's visuals just didnt do it for me, I didnt feel compelled to rave about its lumen and nanite features just because they used them. John needs to understand that not everyone deserves praise for doing the bare minimum.
