Who do you believe are the greatest humans ever? Who has changed the course of our existence for the better? Who has made us understand more about our lives?

It can be explorers, scientists, philosophers, politicians, authors, artists... anyone so long as you give a reason.

When thinking about this I avoided people like Neil Armstrong because what they have done would've happened without them but its up to you if you take that approach.

My vote goes to Sir Isaac Newton because of the discorveries he made were so original and unique. He is considered the greatest mathematician of all time. So much of science and maths today is down to him. I can't imagine the mind that discovered gravity.

Now, your suggestions?

newton did provide many of the fundamental things we use today. calculus would not exist if it werent him as well as much of todays technology. but i would imagine that jesus would be considered teh greatest human to ever live

I don't think he invented calculus? I know he taught himself calculus. Probably, his successor Einstein should be on the list also.

Probably... Socrates... Nikola Tesla... I donno, Shakespeare.

"Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal's death on a cross." Philippians 2:5-8

Greatest Human Being Ever? Jesus the Christ!

Actually... I just thought of this but I can't remember the name. I saw a documentary on an italian family that protected many of the other great thinkers of the rena. from the church's wrath. All about how it would probably never have happened without them.

Well I think there have been many great people in history, but I don't think there's any sort of criteria that can be used for the "greatest." However, I don't think a silly carpenter should fit. But I think people such as Sir Isaac Newton and Terry Fox are certainly great people ... but I'm sure there are many unknown great people that have contributed to the world in ways that we don't know of.

newton was one of the founders of modern calculus as we know it

edit* i thought about einstein too, but his theories wouldnt have been possible without newton, then again newton wouldnt have been able to do much without earlier greek and egyptian math, so i guess jesus is the winner

my vote would be me!

But really, MLK Jr. has to be up there. For getting so much done without being voilent even though he had much reason to be...

Well, he's the obvious choice for any Christian. :p

But outside of religion, the very question seems absolutely absurd to me. How can you possibly single out a single human being as being "Greater" than every single other human being in existence? Anyone you pick will be a flawed and narrow choice.

That was written by a non-muslim (I was shocked) who studied all the explorers, scientists, philosophers, politicians, authors, artists and so on and came out and said Muhammad is the best out of all of them.

His argument was one of influence just in case anyone here is defining greatness differently. Fun book to page through, btw.

Isaac Newton #2
and Jesus #3

Thanks! I was just about to post this very thing. I remember when this was released a few years back and thought it was interesting where different people fell. Of course it's all kind of subjective.

Yes, but this should say something that his (peace be upon him) life needs to be studied and explored. Like you said he (pbuh) is the #1 most influence person in the world out of all the explorers, scientists, philosophers, politicians, authors, artists and so on.

My answer is the correct one :p

I don't remember where this quote is from, but it always kind of stuck with me...

"Man has always feared the darkness, so he scrapes away at its edges with fire."

What? We're being serious? Well, Buddha, Karl Marx and Ralph Nader are all very respectible people in my eyes.

Nerevar

they call me "Man Gravy".
Easy, it's

Alexander the Great.

Seriously though, without him western culture would not have diffused throughout asia minor and the middle east / persia and the basis for all future European / central Asian cultural history would not have taken place (and I doubt Jesus would've been more than a blip on the map)

Well, influential =/= great. I mean, you could make a rather compelling argument that Hitler was the most influential person of the modern era, but I wouldn't consider him a "great person". And no, I'm not comparing Hitler to Mohammed, so don't flip out.

This remind me some poll in '99 on a&e about the personality of the millenium , and they choosed Guttember, you know with his invetion the information about the world started to begin avaible to the masses.

Well it would all depend on what that person did to influential the people. If someone did something bad to influential people that would make him a bad person and if they did something good that would make them a good person in this case a great person.

Well to me Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the greatest person of all time and #1 influential person of all time.

What that book did was it put both good and bad influential of people of history, also hitler is in that book too I forgot but I think his around 30 something or 40, 50 I forgot.
Also note that good over comes evil (bad).

Yes, sorry I can't edit my post and the english is not my 1st language. it seems a good choice IMHO because that started the global spreading of the ideas, knowledge, findings, education.

Didn't they independently discover/invent calculus concurrently, though? At least that's what I recall reading...
Yeah, but the terminology and much of the notation we use today was from Leibniz.

Leibniz published it first , his proofs were much more elegant(especially about integration) and like hito said his notation is used today. It is said that Newton actually "discovered" or formulated calculus before Leibniz. But to be honest, i dont put too much faith in 500 year old copyright claims. What is certain though is that Leibniz DID publish it first and was much more eloquent.

Honestly though the recorded historical facts about mathematics are questionable during that era. For example, L'hospital rule which is commonly thought as originating from Guillaume de L' Hospital was actually formulated by Blaise Pascale. L'Hospital payed Pascale to solve this given question, he got the copyrights.

I say davinci, simply because he owned at so many things.

"Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an Italian Renaissance architect, musician, anatomist, inventor, engineer, sculptor, geometer, and painter. He has been described as the archetype of the "Renaissance man" and as a universal genius. Leonardo is famous for his masterly paintings, such as The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. He is also known for designing many inventions that anticipated modern technology but were rarely constructed in his lifetime. In addition, he helped advance the study of anatomy, astronomy, and civil engineering."

Who else knew so much about so many completely unrelated fields?

If time travel were possible, I'd devote the rest of my life to learning old italian so I could talk to him..
