Green Day - American Idiot

So who's heard the whole album? It has leaked and you can also listen to it at MTV.com.

Green Day are still one of my favorite bands, so I'm holding out until next week to listen to it (comes out 9/21).

I think if you like Green Day, you'll be more than happy. I really haven't paid attention to them in years, but I have heard this and it surprised me. It's quite good.

Green Day rocks. After Nimrod, I sort of lost interest (I was a little disappointed with their last album) so I'll definitely check this album out.

Dookie was fantastic
insomnic was ok
Nimrod. was really good
I missed anything that came out between that and Warning:
Warning: was very enjoyable, even if it was a departure from the normal Green Day sound

I'm very excited for American Idiot. I mean, a 21 track Punk Rock Opera! How could you not be excited?

Eh, as a long time Green Day fan (since 1994) I am rather disappointed by this album. Has nothing to do with any political nonsense, since there is hardly any on the album anyway. Rather, it just feels very lacking, musically. I like "St. Jimmy" "Letterbomb" and some parts of both of the 9 minute songs. That's about it. The rest of the songs seem like filler. Those two "epic" songs, "Jesus Of Suburbia" and "Homecoming" should have been broken up into numerous shorter songs. The individual parts should have been fleshed out a little more.

P.S. Insomniac is still their best album. :)

I absolutely love the song American Idiot and i'll be getting the album when it comes out here on Monday, can't wait! :D

Oh yeah, one thing I noticed is that the US release and the Australian release have different tracklistings?? I don't want to get it from here if i'm missing out on any songs..

This album rocks, the lyrics are brilliant. Props to Green Day for staying Green Day and not becoming some watered down version of there former self.

Just listening to about 30 seconds of each song i wasn't in the slightest bit interested. I think they could have done alot better but oh well.

Well there is your first mistake. That's like reading the first page of every chapter in a book then saying the book could have been better.

I download the album on iTunes this morning. Only cost me $1.99 after my $10 gift card.

It's really quite good. It's got a great mix of songs with varried sounds, which keeps the "Green Day" format from getting too old. I REALLY dig the rock opera thing it's got going for it too. I haven't finished listening to it yet (I'm on Wake me up when September Ends right now), and I really like it a lot.

It's 21 tracks? Not the last time I checked...?

I like the "Jesus of Serbubia" song a lot everything else wasn't too memorable but I didn't give it much of a listen.

I picked up AI last night and it's officially hot shit. I really like where they take it, and the very small touches of "Best Days of our Lives/Summer of '69" and "Ring of Fire" in "Jesus of Suburbia" really flesh the whole track out.

Very tight package, very pleased, and all for $10 at Best Buy.

Yea, I think "Jesus of Suburbia" could possibly be the best song the band has ever wrote.

I absolutely love the album. Couldn't be happier. If you actually follow along with the lyrics and follow the story, it's such a fun listen.

I'm not a fan of Green Day or the song "American Idiot". That said, I heard "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" on the radio the other day and was blown away. Awesome song.

So now, my question is: is the album as a whole more like "American Idiot: (i.e., standard Green Day trash), or "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" (i.e., a really cool song that is nothing like most of their other stuff)?

Human, if you like "Boulevard," you have to hear the song "Holiday." They pretty much flow together, and IMO, "Holiday" is just about the best song on the album.

The song "American Idiot" sounds almost out of place on the album. If you like "Boulevard," I can almost guarantee you'll like the rest.

I went to thier free show last night in NYC, I liked the songs they played off the album. I alos didn't know they covered the Clash's "I fought the Law" for that pepsi commercial....well thats what my GF said is why they played it at the concert.

Yeah, it's on iTunes, I grabbed it with a Pepsi code.

Thanks for the information -- that may have just put me over the edge of buying it.

listened to this 2x yesterday. Great album, really like most of the songs. None stand out yet, but I don't know which song is which yet either. :) it'll take a few more listens to get a little closer with the album.

It's almost as if the firs opera, "Jesus of Suburbia" signals a change in the entire tone of the album after American Idiot itself...and then right into "Holiday" my personal favourite song on the album, defiinitely. And Boulevard...it's a slower Holiday, in many ways. I just really like the flow of the beginning of the album. Finding the end a little slower...but still solid shit.

Not a big Green Day fan, heard the singles, figures I'd give this a listen. Impressed, thus far.

I used to be a big Green Day fan, then after Nimrod not so much. I still like 'em though. I picked up American Idiot, but I need to finish listening to all of it. Jesus of Surburbia and Holiday sound great though, so it's so good so far.(I haven't made it past the first 3 or 4 tracks yet.)

Picking it up tomorrow (going for the Limited Edition one :)). I'm a huge fan so i doubt I'll be let down. I was reading that they wouldn't be against a film being made about it. I'll have to hear the story before I judge if that's a good or a bad thing ;)

Listened to it for the first time this morning and am both shocked and awed. It's a very good album and a real change in style for Green Day, it's like they were holding back on Warning and American Idiot is the result of them truly letting go. They've been through a lot while making American Idiot but the result is worth it.

The sound of the album is actually quite sombre I feel, this isn't the high speed, brash sound you may be used to from Green Day but it works really well. There's also a lot of stuff that's qiute surprising, touches to songs you may not expect from a band who usually don't need much more than a handful of chords for a song.

American Idiot does sound out of place, but it's the first song and I kind of view it like an opening credits theme. I was thinking of calling it an "overture" but that'd be a complete misuse of the word so I'm stuck with the opening credits analogy. Feel free to improve on that for me :)

I admit, it's only my first listen but that first listen was the best hour of my life for a while, certainly the best listen I've had in ages. I could listen to it again after lunch but tbh, I think I'll wait 'til I get home, I kind of want some time just listening to the album and not dealing with work stuff at the same time.

If you're unsure about whether to take a chance on the album, I'd say do it (even if that means testing the waters beforehand...).

this album has more in line with the Kinks' "Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire" than the Who, but i'm nitpicking. the album is leagues better than the rest of their post-Dookie output purely on a melodic level, and the mood he sets in Surburbia in particular is very nice.

why i love rock operas - you can have all these funny little melodic moments and half-baked song ideas that can be combined into several monster tracks.

oh, and for anyone who cares, one of the first, and IMHO the best concept album ever made is the Kinks album refered to above. much like 'American Idiot' it was a social critique of everything that Ray Davies found upsetting in English life in 1967. the music was straight-up rock, without any of the psychedelic flourishes that every other British band (Beatles, Stones, etc.) used. each song had 3 or 4 different melodies running through them, and the best of all, the album clocked under 50 minutes. highly recommended.

I liked Warning the best of the prior albums...but wow...

Just wow.

This is pretentious.

This is stupifying.

This is completely fucking amazing.

Required listening for anyone who can say they like music.

After a few listens this just reassures me that Green Day is indeed one of the most overrated bands of all times. I outgrew this music back in 9th grade. Teh suck.

I've been listening to the whole album the past couple of days, and this sh*t rocks! Definitely my favorite CD right now. "Jesus of Surburbia", "Holiday", "Boulevard", "Wake Me Up When September Ends"....all great songs. I can't recommend this album enough. From beginning to end, it's great.

It's not about being "cool". Green Day is like the Resident Evil 2(the movie) of music. It's just dumb.

Whenever you make some incredibly nerdy statement like that, you are trying to be cool.

You could have added to the discussion and gave some serious points as to why you didn't like the album, but no, you just made some lame Resident Evil joke.

I don't know how he can say it's dumb, it's pretty fucking clever if you ask me, it works on a number of levels and although I've listened it to at least 2 times a day since I've started listening to it, I still manage to find new things or notice new things about it.

If musically it's not your cup of tea, fine. But to call it dumb is silly. Then again, I suspect this is just down to musical snobbery...

I think my favorite track is Give Me Novacaine. I can actually FEEL the emotion going through Jesus' (that'd be the main character) head. The music goes through changes from hard to soft and I just fucking love it.

The whole album is really awesome though. Highlights include: Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine, Letterbomb, Homecoming, and the title track.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, just hold it right there, spinach chin. Leagues better on a melodic level than Insomniac? No freakin' way. That was the pinnacle of their melodic sound right there. Just one track, "Armatage Shanks", beats the entire album of American Idiot, in terms of melodies. Other tracks that beat the shit out of the new album: "Stuck With Me", "No Pride", "86", "Stuart And The Ave.", and "Walking Contradiction."

American Idiot has some nice melodies, but they aren't Green Day melodies. They're borrowed, influenced, ripped-off of various other bands. There are very few signature "Green Day" melodies, or songs for that matter, on the new album.

I think he means "melodic" in a different way Error. I think you understamd what he means; I'm guessing he prefers the AI melodies and considers them more melodic; the riffs, the bits on piano etc etc. Insomniac is pretty much all guitar and as good as the songs are, I'd consider AI more melodic (melodic doesn't necessarily mean better). It *may* be a misuse of the word but I tend to agree even though I love Insomniac (maybe more than AI, haven't made my mind up yet. I'm a GD whore though so I love all their stuff :))
