chvrches

lmao i can't

call me when chvrches doesn't release the same shit with a different album cover and shows as much progression as Grimes did with this album. Visions and Art Angels are worlds apart, The Bones of What You Believe and Every Open Eye are the same piles of shit.

Reality -> World Princess pt. II is absolutely amazing, not feeling the first half of the album as much as the second, everything from Easily onwards is great.

This album is pretty meh to me compared to Visions 😩. I only liked 4 songs.

I fucking love Kill V. Maim though, but only because I heard it live at Beach Goth.

I remember people were mentioning that it sounded like Chvrches, I'm very glad to find that it's way way more interesting than anything by them. But yeah, I guess she's closer to a Chvrches sound this time than she has been. If they sounded like this I'd definitely care about em, that's for sure.

This album doesn't sound anything like Chvrches. Not even in the same genre. Grimes does her own thing and her sound on this album is much more retro than anything Chvrches has ever put out. I love Chvrches (well, the new album not so much) but Lauren has nothing on Claire.

Art Angels is PURE Grimes through and through. It's quirky and irresistibly charming.

Finally got an hour to just sit and give this a first listen. I agree with TheKaeptain's post above, it's a fun album. Worth the wait, for me. :)

finally came around to Artangles. The opening guitar riff in that song is almost too cheesy but luckily it is short lived. Right now the only song that isn't doing it for me is Easily, it just seems totally out of place on the album and really kills the momentum.

realiti to world princess part ii to venus fly: so good.

Very mixed on this so far. Realiti through Life in the Vivid Dream are great, with Venus Fly being the clear standout, but a lot of the songs sound like high quality demos for other artists. Grimes definitely has a wider range of sounds and styles compared to Visions, so I'm still getting used to that. Really reminds me of Reflektor - hated it at first because it wasn't the Arcade Fire sound that I was used to, but it really grew on me.

This dilemma is happening with a lot of her fans right now. At least you seem pretty open to giving the new style a shot, some of them are being super dismissive >_>

Butterfly is my jam but Life in the Vivid Dream doesn't do much for me. Luckily it is just like a short interlude before a great finale.

I love it, it really goes somewhere in the end then the song is over :(
Wish it was full length.

I got into Grimes during the Visions era, but from listening to her pre and post Visions music, she's gradually become both more confident and less moody in her music. I enjoyed Visions because it was happy sounding melancholy/dark music (like MGMT), but Art Angels goes in a more broad, positive, and confident direction, like if MGMT suddenly turned into Passion Pit.

pls stop while you're behind

People who want bands to change for the sake of change need to take a seat. Chvrches have a wonderful sound. I wanted more, and they gave me more instead of fucking with their formula just to appease people who demand novelty. If they don't evolve at all now that they've released Every Open Eye, AKA the album of the year, then you might have a point with this "same shit" business. But guess what, it would still be good shit. Catchy, timeless, top-of-the-stack shit.

I didn't really love Visions outside of Genesis and Oblivion.

This is a damn good pop album. Grime's craft really has evolved so that her weirdness accommodates well crafted and produced pop songs rather than it compensating for weaker aspects.

It's not that people want bands to change for the sake of change, it's that there's always part of the fan base that want the same damn album over and over again. I would have been happy with Visions 2. I liked Visions, but I'm not upset that Visions 2 didn't come out and welcome the evolution of her sound with Art Angels.

This is my AOTY so far btw. Vulnicura is probabl number 2, but I haven't actually listened to much new music so it's a short list.

Tried listening to it on speakers for the first time. No matter what, KvM is the only song between laughing and not feeling normal and Realiti that leaves an impression on me. At this point, I just hope Venus Fly is the next single and gets a video.

I hadn't heard Grimes before, someone sent me a youtube link to "Realiti" version and I liked it a lot. That is a way, way, better version than the one in the album, though, that's a pity. Is it available anywhere (digitally)?

Gonna listen to some of the older stuff now.

Very successful album imo.

I really liked this! I was always a fan of Grimes and I feel like this was a peak. Its a very cute, pop-y, glitter, unicorn and princess album that had such a good formula. It kind of does remind me of k-pop in a way.

However, definitely a top contender for best album of the year tbh.

Favs

  1. Flesh without Blood
  2. Belly of the Beat
  3. Kill V. Maim
  4. Easily
  5. Realiti
  6. World Princess part II
  7. Venus Fly
  8. Butterfly

On the 2nd spin, I warmed up to a few songs, but a lot of them still makes me cringe. Still disappointed tbh.

The Needle Drop review hipped me to this musician. Today at work I listened to the album "Visions". Might have to actually buy it. I like that the lyrics are just unintelligible enough that I can listen to this while working. The lyrics basically just turn into another layer of the music.

If that's something you enjoy, that's even more true of her first two albums.

I love that I now have two Realiti-versions that are equally awesome, but still distinctly different.

I don't get what's so good about Kill V Maim. I want to, but... :(

I also agree that the album is growing on me. Every song opens up on multiple listens.

By the rules of criticism, handed down by the god Criticulous, it is objectively a better album than Visions.

After a couple of days playing this almost non-stop... top 5 of the year easily. The album really grows on you after each listen. SCREAM, Kill V. Main, Realiti, World Princess part II and Venus Fly are top tracks, especially the first one which is getting a lot of hate in this thread and i can't understand how is this possible.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
By the rules of criticism, handed down by the god Criticulous, it is objectively a better album than Visions.
Only Criticulous himself would be so bold.

I broke down and bought the album without being near a wifi source. Well worth the data usage. This album is amazing. Easily in my top five this year. My favorites so far are Venus Fly (Monae!!!), Realiti, and Kill V Maim.
