GT4 import review from 1up

1UP is dead to me.

What the new Ziff Davis rebranding isn't your thing? Actually I'm being sacrastic because I hate it too. Still people want to friend me there...

If you read some of my comments in their news stories you might find them entertaining.

Despite great discussion of artificial intelligence for the drivers things are the same as they ever were. Computer controlled cars drive their lines regardless of where you may be. Wind up in that line and you will be ruthlessly knocked away like an 8-ball that's just been struck by the cue. And like those prior races, the field is again limited to 6 racers total on the track. Where other racers have upped the ante to full racing fields it remains just you and 5 opponents.
I wouldn't really mind too much if online was still in, but this is a little disappointing.

I'll still play it for hours on end.

I'm finding it really, really hard to like this game. 8 years, same crummy AI. It's just like an EA Sports update, only it's not EA Sports. Totally devoid of innovation... but at least it runs at 60fps. 7.

I'm kinda shocked that they didn't upgrade that aspect of the game. It's always been painfully noticeable. This has really just become a showroom model driving game...which isn't bad. Just a little dissapointing (yea, I'm buying it on day one still).

Out on the track a few things are immediately apparent. First and foremost is the sense of speed. A knock against previous versions, it is now one of the game's greatest strengths. Every sense gets into the act. Yes, the landscape whizzing by and tightening of the controls play a big part in that, but what really sells it is something always overlooked before: the sound of the air rushing past the car. It's amazing how convincing it makes the experience, and in Dolby Pro Logic II Surround the blast coming from the center channel and then dispersing over the satellites brings it to life. The sofa and TV melt away, and you are in the driver's seat, barreling down the road. At 350 kph in a full-on race car it's down right scary.
Sweet!

Then the realization that this is Gran Turismo comes crashing home. Despite great discussion of artificial intelligence for the drivers things are the same as they ever were. Computer controlled cars drive their lines regardless of where you may be. Wind up in that line and you will be ruthlessly knocked away like an 8-ball that's just been struck by the cue.
Fuck!

I'm almost certainly not buying this unless they include online play in North America (doubtful).

So it's just another graphical upgrade with better speeds and vibrating controls. Gotta compete with Burnout and NFS:U :lol

What difference is the online play going to make if the multiplayer is so shit? Its pointless. Its a single player orientated game. Its just adding an extra feature to a list rather than something meaningful.

I don't follow...

The AI is shit. But racing against other people would be much, much better. Unless I've missed something.

This is a clear case of graphics over gameplay, if you ask me. Every other racing game I've played this past year - TOCA 2, Project Gotham 2, Burnout 3, Richard Burns Rally, builds of Forza Motorsport et al - are light years ahead of Gran Turismo 4 in design and gameplay.

GT4 has invisible track barriers, zero damage modeling, shit AI (part of me believes the theory that the AI cars stick so steadfastly to the proper racing lines so that the camera angles on all the replays look as excellent as they do), limited number of cars on the track... yeah, it has bloody incredible visuals, but it plays like an absolute dinosaur!

Just think, Capcom probably didn't need to repackage Street Fighter Anniversary as a retro title - people would've happily gone back to having no supers, counters or air moves!

Ugh.

@.@

The fact that it comes down to is that if you sit down with the Logitech FF wheel and grab a car and pick a track, what you will get is the best and most realistic driving experience that you've had outside of real-life. Driving on icy roads sliding around in a Imprezza feels just like my daily experience sliding around on the icy roads in real life.

If you get GT to outrun other cars you're gonna be disappointed. Most of the people enjoying GT4 probably wouldn't care if there were no other cars on the track. It's all about being able to drive through a large number of tracks with a huge list of cars(Something that you can't do in real-life) and have it feel as real as possible.

Some people really enjoy this, some don't. GT is not for everyone and that's all there is to it.

This is SO on-point.

I sorta figured the a.i. was going to remain the same. When playing GT3's arcade mode I jack up the difficulty to hard and its enough of a good race after that. I'll do the same with GT4 I suppose.

Could be worse though. Atleast the drivers don't spin you out from behind or delibertaely slam their brakes while infront of you while youre making progress on the lead car,heh..bastards. PGR2 has been known to do that.

Sure, but it's a little too convenient. If Gran Turismo games DID have more human-like competition, much of the game would be more enjoyable. You wouldn't be arguing the virtues of everything besides the AI being what the game is were the AI not a problem, IMO.

Having great AI would be nice but the driving model is the most important and GT4 is one of the best. For me its all about tuning to perfection and improving lap times. Racing Evolution had very interesing AI interaction, it was too bad the driving model sucked. I hope more developers can take it and improve it.

It's really sad you need to spend $50 on a game and $150 on a wheel to realistically mimic in a game what you do with your Imprezza in real life. BUT MAYBE THAT'S JUST MY OPINION.

The point of the Imprezza comparison was because I know how it feels in real-life so I can compare it with the game's physics.

The point of spending $250 (the wheel is $200 in Japan >.<) is that besides driving an Imprezza I can also drive 600 other cars which I can't do in real life. Not too mention the tracks allow me to drive through a wide range of scenery and road types that I don't normally get to experience in the local drive to the super market.

...all for only $50 for the game and $150 for the wheel. Bargain of the century.

hmmm...crappy ai

still considering picking this up but it makes the decision a little harder. Especially if the online portion is gone. I understand what you are saying about the driving sim, but I don't have the interest in doing hundreds of laps simply to shave seconds of my time for shits and giggles. I did it in moto gp because I wanted to beat people online and win races in the game. I like competing.

People who downplay the importance of online have never played an online racing game, period. Nothing will give you the rush like racing with other real people.

I really doubt GT4 is the most realistic thing ever, unless you want to ignore the countless sims available on PC that are much more focused on a limited car set and undoubtedly have much more authentic physics than GT4 is going to have with 600 cars.

IIRC, the developers have already said in interviews that the AI is pretty much unchanged, and that is what they will be concentrating on next. They need to now that they want to expand on the b-spec element - you can't do that with dumb AI.

IMO, they have the right focus at the moment - get the cars right. The rest will come. I'm expecting a big improvement on PS3 with the AI. Whether thats GT5 or not depends on how much pressure they are under for a quick graphical overhaul from Sony.

It's really sad you need to spend $50 on a game and $150 on a wheel to realistically mimic in a game what you do with your Imprezza in real life. BUT MAYBE THAT'S JUST MY OPINION.

Soooo true, the electricity to run GT4 is sooo much more than the cost of gasoline, engine and tirewear on a $30K car, oh and speeding tickets...what are those? What is sad is if you are spending more than $110 shipped for a wheel.

Show me your crystal ball.

I can't believe that Polyphony would include a G35 Sedan and not a G35 Coupe. Please, someone tell me that my car was in this game. That's what I was looking forward to the most in GT4. Finally having a real car that I could drive in the game.

Also, could anyone tell me if any other games feature the G35 Coupe? I think that NFSU2 does, but what else?

Its just and overweight 350z anyways.

Correction: It's a much more beautiful, elegant car than the Z that has similar performance with a much nicer interior that has a lot more room to move around in. It's a much better everyday and trip car while only costing a little bit more money (especially when you get it for invoice like I did :) ). The Z is only better if you are going to take it out on a track.

While the Z would make a better racing car, the point is that I want to drive MY car in the game.

G35 Coupe - 3,486 pounds
350Z - 3,239 pounds

Not a HUGE difference.

GT is the least fun racing series I've ever played. You have to be a car spooger to get into these games. But a lot of people are.

I don't know anything about cars in real life. Never read a car magazine, never watched Initial D, have no idea how cars work. Drive a normal car in real life and have never raced with it, nor used it for anything besides getting to places. I love arcade racing games like RSC2 and Daytona. Yet for some reason I have lots and lots of fun playing the GT series. I popped it GT4 at 5pm today and it's now 1:45AM and I'm just finishing my session. Even though I don't know much about cars, being able to drive lots of cool ones around nice tracks and getting a feel for the difference between vehicles and parts is fun. It's the same kinda experience you get from doing one of those VR rides at an amusement park. It lets you experience a reality you otherwise wouldn't be able to and I find that very cool IMO. There is nothing else like it on the market.
