GT4 review at 1up

No mention of 1080i support whatsoever. *scratches head* Very lame that none of the reviews bother to comment on it at all. I'm sure it still made it into the US version but you never know. Otherwise okay reviews I guess.

Edit: When I made this thread, there was absolutely no mention whatsoever of 1080i support in the review. They inserted a comment about it after the fact.

Um.....

the U.S. release of the game (like the Japanese version) has 1080i support for those of you with expensive HD sets. Notable as much for its very existence as for the nice (sometimes a little glitchy) tidying-up it does to the game's graphics, this is by no means the most significant of GT4's many features, but it's nice to know it's there.

go back to school.

The review is good. i dont think any review is going to make me change my mind, Im definately going to buy it.

These guys must not have big screen HDTV's because if they did they would know just how important 1080i is for a PS2 game. The jaggies in PS2 games are so bad I don't even play them on my HDTV anymore. At least with 1080i I can justify having component cables.

If it were real 1080i maybe it would be worthy of mention. Too bad the only games on Xbox in 1080i have been worth missing. Soul Calibu 2 was good at 720 but ofcourse we had those nasty black side bars.

I for one, can't wait until we get real HD games.

Awesome review - I couldn't be any more hyped for this game right now. Got it fully prepaid so I can pick it up on Tuesday and go nuts for the 3 days I have off afterwards. The only thing that sucks is that I don't really have a good setup to use my wheel but I'm going to make a good attempt - does anyone know a good table/desk you can get from ikea or something along those lines that works well with the new GT4 wheel?

What score should it be and why?

8.9

Huge list of cars and tracks, great graphics, great steering wheel option.

No damage, no online, same generic sounds, lack of porsche, ferrari, lack of any decent AI.

GT has had Porsches ever since GT2. AI is as good as you want it to be - think about it. What good is damage if there will be no adverse effects and all cars will have the same damage model? Online, meh...I haven't gone online with either PS2 or Xbox in way over a year now.

Oh and, same generic sounds? How about no? Every engine's sound was recorded in idle, partial, and full throttle. The tire squeals (despite popular, and very mis-informed beliefs) are pretty damn realistic, as well. Leave the trolling up to someone who knows what they're talking about. At least mention aspects of GT4 that are actually fucked up, like the quirky physics errors when a 2000lb car pushing 300hp is barely cracking into the 13s on the 1/4 (among other problems).

No he was right,

Edge's review is still the most accurate IMO, even if the score is a bit harsh, it is true that if you're in to GT games then GT4 is definitely for you and if you're not into cars, GT4 won't give you that much as a game.

Oh come on.

Anyway, Kaz, IIRC, said that there will be an additional version released with online play. I think I'm going to wait for that. It had just better be GT4 + online and not a stripped down GT4 w/ online

Theres no porsches in the game, there are ruffs which are the same thing but they dont carry the name. Dont cop out on the damage thing, its lame. There should be damage when much smaller time games have it in there fine.

Online is a huge part of gaming now, also it was promised by PD that it would be there with DLC. The fact you dont go online just shows everyone which console you spend your time on the most.

How about yes !. They are weak pissy sounds, nothing like the real thing. They have been mastered to hell for that japanese clean sound. The tyre squeeks are shocking and so repetitive, i dont know any cars that loop tyre sounds.

I am being objective mr 99% PSX ETREME EDITOR !!! I didnt even mention physics because its always been naf, but its better than 90% of the other games. Your type make me sick, you are willing to lick PD's asshole and blindly pass over and faults the game has, yet if its to do with a game like Forza - you are the first to throw mud.

If you cant see my list as being objective then please dont talk to me, as i dont want to have a ride in the la la land that the sony hype machine has got you so fixated in.

By rights you should have stopped breathing by now, therefore incapacitating you and rendering you unable to type anything.

But i like you, so please keep breathing.

um, he's a huge Sony-bot that bashes Nintendo...

"Sure, the GameCube is only $99, but they could give it away with boxes of Apple Jacks and it wouldn't help"

but then again Nintendo-hating isn't as looked down upon as Nintendo-respecting.

what's that supposed to mean? Online is a huge thing for many racing fans. Just because you don't care for it doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of people who care. By "AI is as good as you want it to be?" , if you mean the AI is shit and feels like it 's from 1995, then I agree (just speaking from various reports, feel free to prove me wrong). There have been games where damage HAS adverse effects (Toca 2). I agree that it is useless if it doesn't have any adverse defects, but Toca 2's did and Forza also is going to have damage that makes a difference. Same damage model or not, it's better than having NO damage model.

There are people who look for more than a hotlapping simulator, even then an online scoreboard would increase the value of that quite a bit. As important as graphics are, they do not make a whole game.

Right back at you.....

No ferrari or porsche, no cigar.

If you're really serious about taking off for that, I can't wait to see what you take off for Forza, because it should be a loaded list.

So lets get this straight, theres over 500 cars and no ferrari or porsche, and thats somehow OK for the "driving simulator" ? Oh thats right, real people dont want to drive these cars right.....

As for forza, it should have been canned and moved to xenon. But nice attempt to dedend your PS2 breathen.

The reason you don't take off for those cars is because there's always going to be cars that people want in games and you can't take off everytime for that stuff. It's something that should never have an affect on the actual score.

Its like having a sandwich without bread. Ferrari and Porsche are the mother and father of exotic cars. Everyone knows who they are and there is no excuse to not have them in the game.

Big fat :lol

Will the constant GT bashing from Xbox freaks EVER end?
I mean give it a rest, you don't like it, you won't buy it, FINE.
5 million other people will and enjoy the hell out of it.

I don't agree at all with this argument. It's like saying that DMC3 sucked because it didn't have Levi Strauss licensed clothes, that all the first WE sucked because the lack of FIFA license and real names, that Wave Race Bluestorm sucked because it no longer had the Kawasaki license...
We are judging several aspects of videogames when doing a review but no licensing stuff. If it was a car magazine I would understand but it's a videogame magazine.

A pitty ? Sure...But I don't see it is so dramatic to lower an score and I am not so sure all the GT fans are wanting those cars by all means (sure it would be nice to have them there). Actually GT userbase is very prolific to asian brands, in fact GT has helped those brands to grow overseas.

Dunno, if anyone's noticed (or has it been mentioned elsewhere or in another thread?), but on the same page is a link to EGM's review.

scores: 9.0 / 9.5 / 9.0

If by better you mean quickly degenerated into tired anti-GT4, pro-GT4 arguments, then yeah I agree.

Heh. J00 g0t 0wn3d... the 1080i comment was in there from the start. (I edited/posted the review last night).

Alcibiades: Just because Davison was the EIC of OPM doesn't mean he's a PS2-bot. He often comes into my office drooling over the latest and greatest on Xbox... and c'mon, Nintendo bashing? So anybody who criticizes Nintendo's business strategies is somehow an N-hater? Let's put it this way: Everybody I work with wants Nintendo to succeed -- but they keep doing shit that defies logic -- end of story.

ourumov: IAWYP.

And yes, 20 fps is the new 180 fps. Long live Flopza, etc.

I absolutely, honestly did not see a thing about 1080i in the review when I made this thread. I wouldn't have any reason to lie about it either.

Actually, the 1080i comment is on page 2 of the review. I was kind of head-scratching on the 1080i comment too (since others in the thread said it was there) then realized I was looking at page 1 of 2. My eyes had skipped right past the "1 | 2 | Next" navigation and gone to the user reviews.

Note to 1up site designers: set off the navigation a bit more, and don't put the user reviews on the first page of the review (that's really what made me think the review was just the first page).
