Extended Shadows Distance does some... weird stuff with shadows in the vicinity of the player.
Maxed w/ high res shadows: (look at the palm tree shadow)

Off w/ high res shadows:

Let's see how it looks without high res shadows.
Maxed w/o high res shadows:

Off w/o high res shadows:

So yeah, if I turn it off I get detail back in shadows... but then there's shadow pop-in while going fast. Argh!
It's like it's degrading quality in order to cover a wider area.
Ha, i was about to post this :D
Also made some screens to show the problem...

I noticed this too. Fucking annoying as you are driving or walking around in an area.

Currently experiencing THIS glitch. Completely game breaking. I've tried restarting, going into online, starting the mission as Franklin, starting it as Michael, going off and doing other stuff for a while and then coming back to it. I've tried different graphics settings, resolutions and framerates. I can't see any fixes for this anywhere and the last thing I want to do right now is restart the fucking campaign.

Anyone encountered this or found a fix?

Currently experiencing THIS glitch.

Damn dude, did you install a jet engine to the thing? :P

Friend had that happen too, but afaik he just restarted a few times and it sorted out itself. Game certainly has its issues - I couldn't even load story mode (infinite loading screen) without loading GTA Online first.

Been tweaking for 2 days now, and got it running pretty good. However, I'm getting some highly annoying microstutter in cutscenes that I just can't seem to get rid of consistently.

5820K@4.4Ghz
Titan X (1425/3875)
16GB DDR4 @ 2666Mhz

Tried Nvcpl Vsync, in game Vsync, Adaptive Vsync, no Vsync, frame limit in NInspector and Afterburner. None of them gets rid of it. Driving me nuts. Happens on lower settings as well.

I'm guessing the stuttery cutscenes are similiar in nature to the ones in DA:I in that they are kinda baked in as they were recorded at lower than 60fps. I'm getting 60fps 95% of the time now but cutscene character animation can sometimes look a little choppy.

Yeah I suspect the same thing.

Does anyone else sometimes get some nasty colour banding in the skybox?

I've actually noticed how incredibly smooth the skybox is, never once noticed banding.

I think two things I've learned from this experience and can safely recommend to others for GTAV is:

- Have a page file and have it set to automatic. The game is a memory hog.
- Use full screen, not windowed borderless

So far those two things seem to have contributed to the most stuttering and crashing.

Just set my page file to automatic. Noticed that my RAM usage is 60% when I start the game, but 80% after 50-60 minutes. At that point I start to experience some stuttering.

One of my friends said it might be a VRAM issue (constantly refreshing textures). I thought I might try turning down the texture quality to see if that helps.

At worst, I guess I just have to close the game and restart it every hour or so.

That's vsync kicking in there.

Your game is dropping below 60fps, so vsync takes you to 30fps. You may be standing still, but the game is still going on around you.

I turned off v-sync and while it seemed better at first, the problem is still happening. I'll chalk it up to my processor not meeting the recommended requirements for now.

Seems like people were too quick to call this an amazing port.

Memory leak issues, stuttering, a shitty downloader and launcher, and ridiculous CPU usage.

Not really that good.

I had that problem when I was playing in windowed borderless mode. Going fullscreen got rid of it for me.

Eh, I could eventually access Michaels house after restarting my PC. Twice. With 5min breaks after each shutdown. Could atleast squeeze in another mission before bedtime but it certainly isn't a pleasure to play in a hurry, knowing the dreaded "GTAV stopped working" message could pop up anytime... :/

While it certainly runs well when it does, the crashing/memory leak/whatever is kinda killing it for me right now. Hope R* is at it and pushes a patch or two within the next days.

Ah, also is there a way to permanently save the 60fps framerate lock by Nvidia inspector? Mine always defaults to off after each reboot.

Confirmed bug with the
Jewelry store heist
: Clicking RMB/LB on controller while as Franklin on bike or Michael in hauler will crash the game. I had to do the
heist
4 different times before I googled it and confirmed that was the case.

I got my first crash since launch just now. The only thing that was different was that I loaded 4 songs and used the User Radio option, game started playing my second song as I drove up to the ferris wheel and it crashed. Prior to this I could drive everywhere for a long time and no issues, just strange that my first crash occurs when using the User Radio for the first time.

I'm currently having 44-55 fps in the city, is this acceptable for GTX 970 and i7 2600K? With high and very high settings most options.

Can't say I've had many issues apart from occasional minor stuttering when the VRAM goes over the limit.

Anyone have similar specs to me ? Already bought the game twice on 360 and PS4...so not sure if I should bother until it hits the Steam sales and/or I upgrade the rig

Should I expect 60fps ? I normally run games at 1680x1050....so is a sustained 60fps achievevable at a comparable gfx level with the PS4 ?

Specs :

Well, I have to say, it's running mostly like shit for me.

I know I'm running on a laptop here (with a 4GB 680M) but I had no trouble running anything else at 30FPS @1080p. I'm trying to lock it at 30FPS with RivaTuner, and not only is it all stuttery, the framerate jumps down to like the teens and twenties all the time.

I've turned down pretty much everything to except resolution, but kept textures on 'high" figuring my 4 gigs of RAM can handle it. Anyways, not sure what to do now, it's not exactly a smooth experience and I really don't want to drop it down to 900p...

I'm getting crazy stuttering for some reason, it's almost unplayable.

Not really.

Every rig could be different pending HW and also if said HW is not defective.

I had one alt tab to desktop the first night and was able to get back on. Things have been perfect since

Dual core or quad core CPU? And have you tried playing with the density/variety/distance sliders in the regular graphics tab? Your graphics card is close in power to the recommended spec (not great, but good enough), so 1080p/30 really shouldn't that big of a problem on medium settings....unless you're running with a dual-core cpu. Then all bets are off.

I got this weird bug when I was going on a rampage in the subway. All of a sudden stamps with the text "police" started to appear over the ordinary floor textures. It flashed between stamps and ordinary textures without stamps depending on how I directed the camera. I wonder if it was some kind of ai debugging tool to make sure that the police can reach you?

A screenshot:

I was running locked 40fps, borderless windowed mode on my 120hz screen. Settings were 4xmfaa, one step down on grass and reflections, otherwise the highest settings. My specs are 3570k@4.6, 8gb ram, Titan X.

I had the same thing while in that area when I was playing online. I'm not sure what causes it.

I've never really used beta drivers before. Am I likely to see much improvement using them. I've a 2GB AMD 7870 if that matters?

There will always be distorted perception, since 99% of people for whom the game works perfectly never post in these threads. I have 12+ hours played so far and not a single issue, constant 60fps at very high, looks and plays perfectly.

Is anybody else annoyed by the way the sky flickers ever so slightly when driving around with sunny weather? I did see this in the PS4 version too, but it seems much worse with the increased fps.

I investigated this a bit more and the issue gets worse with increased fps.

- Hardly noticeable @ 30fps
- Worse @ 60fps
- Pretty annoying @ 70+fps

As even the console versions have it, this is probably by design. :(

also; lots of people pushing red in VRAM but the game can definetly get there

I played for a long time last night and it froze with the "D3D device was removed" or whatever it is it says

so, yeah, even tho you can take it to the reds and mantain good performance don't expect that in the longrun your card won't crap out if stressed

That is a sign of an ustable GPU overclock.

Given the ridiculous sales of the game, it is logical that people will have issues.
Also the game is demanding in terms of tweaking, so some people will not have the patience to get the most out of it. Others do not have enough RAM or try their luck with pushing too much data into 2GB cards.

CPU usage is great, the game is taking advantage of multiple threads and you will not be bottlenecked like in GTA4 if you have a strong CPU.

it can be, but it only really happened twice before in very intensive games, so I don't worry as much about my card as I know the game is pushing its limits

also; it only seems to happen in Big Picture mode, and if you google around you'll see im not alone. odd.

edit: my OC is pretty mild btw, no reason not to do it. +135 on core clock and +225 on mem

You have to consider just how shit a lot of PC ports are these days though. This game is nothing like those.

All the issues you listed can definitely be patched and tweaked by Rockstar.

It is a very impressive port overall tbh.

IIRC you are on a 680? Had that card before my 970 and wasn't able to push it that high. So, just in case it turns into a problem, you can always scale back a bit. :)

Unplayable without it for me. Went from dropping to 40fps in traffic to getting 60fps consistently. Also think that it solved an issue with the game stuttering when listening to the custom radio station

I've had a perfect experience from day one. My lowest graphic setting is shadows and texture quality(Normal), everything else is on high and I have nothing enabled under advanced settings. I get 60fps so far. I can't speak for the wilderness sections of the map as of yet but I imagine I will need to tweak the foliage setting from High where it is now. I usually disable Vsync In-game and I enable it in the Nvidia control panel for my games. As an experiment, I disabled it from the control panel and enabled it in game. After awhile, all the problems I've been reading started occurring. 59 fps was my new max frame rate, Stuttering, pop in, Self Radio causing loading problems with the world and very frequent frame rate dips to 30. I ended the experiment and every problem disappeared. Maybe it's a case by case basis but the Vsync in this game has problems.

I do have one issue with the game on my laptop. I have the MSI GT60 and it's using Nvidia Optimus and like most people, The rockstar social club launcher crashes until I disable nvidia and start the launcher, enable Nvidia again and it starts up. Is there a better workaround yet? Thanks!

What other games were you running? Your videocard isn't exactly good for gaming I'm afraid.

It's really not bad at all. My 680M has been pretty good with almost any game I've ran on it. I can easily play Dragon Age Inquisition @1080p and 30FPS with most things on high, for example.

Dual core or quad core CPU? And have you tried playing with the density/variety/distance sliders in the regular graphics tab? Then all bets are off.

I have a i7 i3610QM, which is quad core. I mean, I know it's not a top of the line CPU, but should be way more powerful than the PS4's, which can run it at 1080p/30FPS.

I haven't messed around with the density, etc sliders yet though. Do these make a huge impact on performance?

Hi guys

I've been reading the thread and it seems a lot of you go above the RAM limit.

I have 8GB, 3570k stock and a 2GB GTX770 and I have to run the game on "normal" textures because of the VRAM limit.

Also, someone listed a 60hz fix but I'm having a bit of trouble finding how to do that. Can you elaborate? Should I create a custom profile for GTA5 on nvidia control panel and configure the vsync? Or is it a setting?

Ah cool. I've just installed them. Was running alright, so hopefully I see some improvement. :D
