GTA V PC Performance Thread

I'm getting really good performance with an 4.4 GHz i5 2500K and SLI 680x2. It's locked at 60 with most settings at Very High or near.

The only issue I have is that shadows have a very, very low draw distance. I tried setting them to Very High, but it doesn't work. It's as if the AF wasn't applying to shadows. Has anyone found a solution to this issue? I know others were experiencing it too.

That's what I'm starting to think. I'm tempted to upgrade to 16GB - if I bought my old sticks it'd be another $60 which isn't bad.

Yeah. I forgot to mention I'm on a 780ti and OC'd 4670k, difference being I have way more ram than I need. But I have no stuttering or even major dips in framerate for that matter. In the city I'm practically locked at 1080/60 with mostly maxed settings. With MSAA x4 to boot.

Just had a mess around using the 14.12 drivers (haven't updated them yet), my Phenom II X6 @ 3.9ghz plus my R9 280x at maximum settings plus maximum sliders and long shadows etc @ 1080p = an unwavering 30fps.

I'm really quite impressed with how well it runs and how great it looks, i wasn't actually expecting to be able to max out the settings and get a constant 30fps.

I'm pretty sure FXAA quality is tied to the quality of post processing in this game. On the higher levels of post processing it definitely seems to have less jaggies, and it makes sense on a technical level at FXAA is post processed AA.

Just tried it out and wow, I'm impressed how well it runs on my system. Especially compared to GTA IV, which looks worse and still runs like shit on my PC to this date.

Left all graphics settings at default (everything at high to very high), only increased MSAAx2 and the gameplay is absolutely smooth. From watching the Fraps FPS counter, I get about 40 FPS average and min FPS are around 33, but never below 30 FPS. Furthermore there is no stuttering at all when I spin around the camera very fast (unlike IV where the stuttering is unbearable).

My specs:

Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.8 Ghz (stock, but I guess I'll overclock it now)
AMD Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Edit (3 GB VRAM) (14.5 beta drivers)
6 GB DDR3-RAM
no SSD
1080p monitor

That's the assumption I made when seeing how Rockstar had implemented it here, seems like a watered down form of FXAA. I do hate the blurring it presents normally but when no other AA option is there (that does not kill the framerate) I would take it.

It's just I honestly see only a very small benefit from using it here which is a shame because even on a 980 any other form of AA is a no go unless you want to sacrifice visual fidelity over jaggies.

Is there no way to inject SMAA currently?
The blur from FXAA in this game is *seriously* minor.

And you can inject SMAA through SweetFX. But it doesn't work as well as FXAA here.

FXAA is a no brainer solution for those who cant justify doing MSAA.

I don't think the game has bad FXAA usage

it may be minor but it's better than throwing vaseline on your screen which is what most games do

Post FX set to the lowest, no AA apart from FXAA, long shadows off and now grass too? :/ I think I'll wait for a patch instead. I really can't justify lowering down too many stuff on a GTX 980. It seems like a different team did the countryside, it's horrible even with a Gsync monitor it goes under 30 like half the time.

Grass on ultra has every blade of grass casting a shadow. Turning it to very high instead turns off the shadows and raises the framerate massively.

Edit:

Are there any comparison images of SMAA vs FXAA for this game?

I believe so, I was also experiencing a strange stutter when I had RAW input. Direct did work better, but sensitivity was a bit too low for me. I ended up with windows mouse and cranked up the sensitivity to get to where it felt just right. Personal preference.

The weird thing is that raw mouse input only seems to make the camera stutter when moving the character with WASD*. When I tried aiming with the mouse while moving with a 360 pad at the same time there was no stuttering at all; as smooth as direct and precise as raw, just the way it should be.

*Specifically tracking the mouse vertically while holding W or S and horizontally while holding A or D, and the stuttering persists even if you 'overide' a held key with analogue pad movement for the opposite directional value at the same time. It's odd :S

I HAVE to play this game with Vsync on, but I get constant 60FPS with VH textures while having to turn everything else down to normal/high with my 2GB GTX 680, this game looks stunning. I did the
Lost MC heist and going across the lake in the Dhingy...

My god...

Nice I was about to ask what to expect with my specs, but we're about par. I have a 7950 3gb, and a i7 920 but mine is OC'd to 3.6 Ghz. Also have 16 gb ram and an SSD. So hopefully I'll get similar performance and even better after I tweak some stuff. Don't care much about MSAA and I also don't care for certain effects like motion blur and DOF which can improve things a good deal.

I've run into s strange issue today with the controller. I'm using the ds4 with ds4 tool (scopServer) which emulates a x360 controller and the LT / l2 button is somehow stuck, so my character will be always be aiming a gun when equipped and the I can see the break light on when entering vehicles although the car isn't reversing.

I've used the ds4 controller native without the ds4 tool and everything works fine, so it can't be the controller - the down side here is there's no vibration.

I've reset all control options to defaut and I've also tried my PS3 controller using another ds3 tool and I have the same issue.

I can use alternate controls, aim with L1 and shoot with R1 and there doesn't seem to be any issues doing this on foot but the vehicles still have the brake light on.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Apparently, you can solve the FPS drops caused from using Self Radio by only having shortcuts to music files in the folder. Miiiight not actually be true.
Boop.
To make lots of shortcut, click 'n drag the files to the folder you want the shortcuts to be while holding alt.

I put my entire music folder as a shortcut and my damn game wouldnt even load.

This is correct. Just tested it. First picture is no FXAA, second is FXAA with normal post FX, third is FXAA with ultra post FX.

DS4Windows DSDCS works fine for me.

Just ran the benchmark and it seems the FPS drop to low 20s in some areas on my system. But I guess I can overcome this by tweaking the graphics settings and by overclocking my CPU. Nonetheless it runs much smoother than IV which had this awful stutering although the actual FPS are sufficiently high.

So finally tried with my shitty rig. (i7 2600 - 560 - 8GB)

I'm stuck with Normal textures (card only has 1270MB of RAM), but I can play with nice visual fidelity and smooth 30 fps in Full HD. Yes, 30 fps.

So does grass quality affect pop-in? I've got it set to high, and the pop-in's pretty bad. Distance scaling is maxed out, extended scaling is disabled.

I don't think it has anything to do with the FXAA implementation, you could force FXAA through the nvidia control panel and get the same results. This game just has a shitload of aliasing, with tons of slim, intricate geometric lines and structures. These post-processing algorithms start to fall behind very sharply when there's too much sub-pixel detail.

So, in the countryside I have 62-75fps at 1080p. Only had to put the Grass Detail on Very High instead of Ultra, still looked decent. Modest i7 930, gtx 970, 6gb ddr3, Spinpoint F3 HDD with same win 7 install from around 2009/10.

Damn man. Do a reformat.

I don't think the game has bad FXAA usage

By definition there is no bad form of FXAA, they are all just terrible.

Friends don't let friends buy headsets or use FXAA on PC.

Thanks for posting those shots, the difference is clear. Shame that postfx also include massive amounts of bloom on very high and ultra settings, otherwise I'd have used that.

My autosave corrupted. The game crashed so I reloaded it and the game just sat on the loading screen (seemingly) indefinitely (10 mins as a test).

The thing is is that the game wasn't saving when it crashed. It was a good 10 minutes after the last autosave so I have no idea what has happened.

Thankfully I have a manual save but I lost around a hour and 30 mins.

Okay, I got paid so I'm putting some money into upgrading motherboard and Processor, this is what I'm going to have:
AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8 Core
MSI 970 GAMING ATX AM3+
TX 560 SE
4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3

My processor was the bottleneck but now I'm guessing my card will become the new bottleneck, but I'm hoping this will improve a lot of the issues i've been facing. Will I be able to pull like medium settings in GTA with this?

A Core i5 would be much better for that set up, even the low end @3.0 mhz would do better.

If you can't afford to upgrade the mobo to intel, maybe 8gb ram, 4gb is the very minimun these days.

Ah, okay, I gotcha, thank you. I'm actually going to get 8 gigs with next check but I'll look into the i5.

I spent a lot of time helping a friend with a similar issue today. The indefinite load was caused by having the Grass setting on anything higher than normal. Not sure what caused it maybe saving at a certain place on the map.

Good investment especially if you get one on sale. Someone should also say to get a good cooler air or water so you can oc and get even more value.

I get occasional stutters at certain traffic areas from time to time while driving fast, I'm assuming in order to load things. Any idea what setting I could change/reduce that could help? edit - I have AA off, as well as the stuff in advanced graphics. The rest I have on high/very high.

Okay, thanks for the tip. I will give it a go.

Edit: Sadly this did not fix the problem. It is a bit worrying that the save was seemingly corrupted even though the save/crash happened at completely different times. I am going to manual save into several slots to be 'safe' from now on.

Edit 2: The save would have been at the pier after the mission Daddy's Little Girl. I have saved here many times without a problem.

I have weird stutter issues. Most settings are maxed and I have 140 fps but get weird stutters where the FPs drops only about 10-20 frames when that happens. This is with vsync off and the stutters are what I call "micro".

If I turn vsync on then the stutters last longer and drop from 140 frames to 1-5 frames.

It's really weird, my PC is way above recommended. I've tried a couple of supposed fixes for some like turning of custom music scanning but that didn't so anything.

Last thing I have to try is install the latest nvidia drivers for GTA V, which I'll do tomorrow morning.

This is frustrating. Mostly seems to happen only when driving. Don't really notice it on foot. It doesn't matter how low I put the settings either, same issue occurs.

Noted. Kinda dumb question but is there a particular type of ram that works better over others? on pcpartpicker I see a lot of different ones but I'd rather get a $100~ range ram if it works just as well as $250~ ram. My current build was my first one ever, and it was kinda budget so I think I just put in the recommended newegg 4gigs.

Also, I don't know what's up with my connection, but I can never find an online lobby with other people in it and I can't connect to friend's games

Don't buy AMD processors.

If you can swing the extra $30 or so (plus the extra for an intel motherboard), the i5 4590 looks like a really solid chip. You won't be able to do much with the overclock, but it has a solid boost speed of 3.7Ghz, so it's still a good performer. If you're interested in overclocking, you'll have to spend another $40 to get the higher speed, unlocked 4670k.

But DEFINITELY 8GB RAM or more. Even if you have to get slightly slower RAM, that's infinitely better than running into the cap.

So apparently the latest nvidia drivers were causing issues with m SLI setup, to the point where SLI would enable and disable. I run two different GTX 970s; SC ACX 2.0 and SSC ACX 2.0. So I had remove the drivers, clean the PC, go to the 347 drivers and run the differentSLI tool.

Now I'm in business. Sucks though, didn't have this issue before.

At 1200p I have all settings on very high save for reflection msaa and msaa is off.

I just ran the benchmark and it didn't go below 57fps. Mostly at 59.

That's with a gtx 770 with 2 gb ram

Edit: turned shadows down to high since driving was laggy

And for the love of god, buy at least 8GB of RAM.

I forgot to point out, I'm just going to be using the RAM/Card i currently have, next paycheck I'm buying 8 gigs. The i5 looks good, though, prolly gonna go with that.
Does AMD have bad build quality or something like that or are they just subpar?

I've had the game crash a few times in MP but haven't had any problems with SP, the error is some D3D INT something or other.
