GTA V PC Performance Thread

Disk space on your primary drive and run windows update?

Windows Update shows no updates for me to download, and I've ~360GB or so free on my main C drive.

You don't have a page file do you? Exact same issue I had. I had mine disabled and only 8gigs. Even though the game doesn't use more than 8gigs, windows allocates more than 8. You need a page file or the game will crash. You should be able to see the committed memory requirement on the task manager.

I'll actually look at that now! I think I disabled the page file since I used to have a much smaller SSD for Windows, come to think of it.

Yeah sounds about right, I have a big overclock on my 970 (1545/3900Mhz) which keeps it above 55fps. I also couldn't see what 2xMSAA on reflections was doing, so disabled it.
I OCing my card-- I get a little leery about doing so, but I might try to tweak it a little higher to see if I can get away with it. The temps seem to be running around 60 degrees, which is good.

I'll take 2xMSAA on reflections off, I turned it on at your suggestion but couldn't tell a difference honestly.

Is there a way to enable DOF separately from Post FX? Setting the latter to high automatically turns it off.

Also, is there a way to avoid colour banding, or is it an inevitable flaw? You can see it in the sky.

I'm debating on waiting to get this until the bugs are worked out and video card prices are lower. I have an i5 4590, a 660 Ti and 8 GB RAM.

It looks like 60 FPS isn't possible with a 660 unless anyone here has experienced otherwise. If it is possible has anyone here been able to do it or is my card just going to bottleneck my performance?

How big is the difference between it and a 770? If it's not huge, you might be able to run at a good framerate if you turn down enough settings.

There don't seem to be any tweaks for seperate DOF, the DOF is considered a Post FX "effect" so it has to be at very high at least to run whatever scripts / shaders make DOF happen.

As for banding, it's probably inevitable but that's pretty minor. If it really bothers you though try SweetFX / Reshade with either some noise or some dithering, it should smooth it out with subtle blending of colors.

This is dithering by the way:

How much of a performance impact would I be looking at with SweetFX?

Also that gamersnexus guide is good, but it misses a few things. Like how shader quality seems to affect POM. Look at the ground, first shot is very high, second is high. Also dropping from very high to high barely seemed to impact performance, so I'm keeping it on very high.

A few things have bugged me so I've stopped playing for a bit until there is a patch or a good way around them.

The line ahead of your character or the box around them where detail draws in is really distracting.

Performance being seemingly random. Sometimes its ok sometimes its not.

Self FM causing 10fps drop when using it and stuttering while its on. This is the most frustrating to me. I would love to just cruise around listening to some California Love and take in the atmosphere that Rockstar has created but at 60fps, not 50fps.

These are a few of the minor gripes I have with it. Its a fine port otherwise.

980
2500k @ 4.5
8gb ram
HDD.

Is there really nothing I can do at the moment to stop the game from crashing? After the latest patch, the thing just CTDs on me now every 5 - 10 minutes. I was hoping that lowering settings would help but nope, no difference :(.

I don't know how some can claim this to be Rockstar's best PC port because man, the crashes happen more frequently than something like Battlefield 4

I kinda feel the same. Does your system also show the performance quirk I described in this post?

I ask because I also get random performance problems, and although I have a different CPU, I'm also on a 980 and 8GB RAM and my install is on an HDD.

Is there no way to disable the Rockstar logo intro movie? With SweetFX it's adding like 5 minutes to my startup time.

I dont think you should worry so much. Im hitting around 40fps in 1080p with my mobile 765m(minor OC) with everything on high. The 660ti is suppose to alot faster. But it all depends on what settings you are expecting to run, on my mobile gpu there is not power for fancy fxaa msaa stuff

Yeah, way too much tearing with adaptive V-sync. I need to find a way to deal with the stuttering though, it's very annoying.

The in-game vsync option introduces some stuttering even in areas where you'd get a perfect 60 when forcing it through drivers.

I wish that the in-game option worked properly since there's no other way to get triple buffering in GTA5. Well, you can try borderless windowed mode but that's ultra-stuttery for me.

So in my case, driver vsync options are the only way I can get rid of that microstutter. I've decided to go with adaptive vsync and just live with the tearing when I drop below 60. G-Sync should fix the problem entirely but I'm still waiting for Amazon to ship my monitor.

The thing is I'm running 3 Titans @ 4k so I'm <60fps all the time. So with adaptive V-Sync I'll get lots of tearing. I have all the features jacked up tho. Even with some of the features turned down I still seem to have the stutter.

Anyone knows when's the Geforce graphics guide for this game gonna go up (if there is one) ?

There will be one and it's still being worked on. There isn't a deadline but keep an eye out for it, due to the extent of the options it's taking some time.

I found MSAA was causing micro stutter. Although if you're constantly below 60, you are going to get judder/stuttering.

Turn extended shadows to minimum, they seem to be somewhat bugged.

Reduce extended distance a few notches.

Grass to very high instead of ultra. Same for Post FX.

MSAA off.

That should make a significant difference.

I'll try turning MSAA down/off and see what happens. I think it's more the engine.

Yeah, 3 Titans just don't have what it takes to push it at 4k/60Hz, which is kind of sad considering the money I laid out for it.

Yeesh, if I was getting below 60 a majority of the time, I'd probably force 30 FPS. Tearing sucks.

Still, if you have ALL of the sliders turned up, there are a few that have a significant effect. I'd rather do without very high grass or some AA than force a 30 FPS lock or deal with non-stop tearing.

It's either that or look into a G-Sync 4K monitor.

I wouldn't think of it that way, they have included settings that make tiny or indistinguishable differences for exponentially increasing resources. Those kinds of settings are akin to maxing Crysis at release.

4K max settings including maxed MSAA at 60Hz is probably beyond any hardware for demanding games at this point. Is MSAA necessary at that resolution? I'd think at that point post processing AA would do a good job without excessive blurring.

Just noticed that geforce experience settings have been updated for the game. When did this happen? Maybe a sign that the nvidia performance guide is about to be released?

Crashing every 5-10 min sounds like maybe a memory issue? Crashing to desktop? Any windows messages when it happens? You do have a page file correct?

Do you have Landing Page set to off? If yes, set it back to on.
It sounds weird but it fixes the repeatable crashes when switching characters during heist for me. Probably some settings were not load correctly when the game starts and log straight to gameplay.

Thanks to some posters on prev page.

Try what I just mentioned. It worked for me.

Turning the landing page back on fixed the switching character crash on Blitz Play mission after having it crash over and over with it switched off. Thank you!

The longer I play the worse the stuttering gets. I get 60fps without issues for like a half hour and then after that stuttering starts to begin, it feels like the game "accumulates" something and in task manager the memory being used increases as time goes on. Anyone know why this is and if there's a way to stop it?

I tried setting priority to it in task manager to high but that doesn't do anything. If I stop playing for a bit then go back to it the stuttering is gone again but it comes back again after a while of playing.

Damn, just did the heist mission at the sawmill online, and the forest area dips by around 10FPS. Going to test it in SP. Would grass be the likely culprit? I've got it set to very high.

Depends on how good the post process aa is, and how prone the game is in general to jaggies. A game like ryse absolutely doesnt need hardware aa at 4k because the post process aa is so good and all the art was designed to minimize the amt of aliasing. Very few games meet these criteria tho. I dont have a 4k screen, but downsampling from 4k on my 1080p screen in this game is still pretty jaggy and shimmery. Adding the 4x msaa on top makes it relatively clean

Anyone knows when's the Geforce graphics guide for this game gonna go up (if there is one) ?

Andys working on it, its a huge time sink with so many settings + open world variables + having to restart. He hasnt given an eta but this coming week seems likely

You can start with sweetfx disabled and enable once in game. Have a look in the other files, it's a simple 0/1 toggle in global settings. I'm using sweetfx 2.0 in case its not in the older ones like 1.5, can't remember. Download 2.0 from the reshade site if not in the older sweetfx versions.

Also I've turned off sweetfx mid loading and the game immediately started loading properly.

What? I have a 660ti 2 GB, everything is set to very high (yes, including textures), 1080p, high distance scaling, medium population variety, "high detail when flying" enabled in advanced graphics, and I have mostly 60 FPS, some dips to 50 that can be fixed by lowering some stuff to high.

This game is now crashing to desktop if I sneeze too loudly.

And this is with a fresh Windows install. No idea what the problem is. Two crashes in a row at the beginning of this mission now, too...

No, you don't need to use adaptive or borderless window at all.

Force normal vsync and triple buffering through drivers. Then, when you get into the game, alt tab out of the game, then back in. This will get both vsync AND triple buffering working in the game properly.

Don't you get memory problems? I have 660 SLI myself and it's mostly memory holding me back. Still can get 60fps though.

Never tab out of the game with the Steam overlay active, I have never been able to tab back in again and it stops responding.

Unless this has changed recently, the triple buffering option in the Nvidia Control Panel is just for OpenGL games and will not effect DX9-11 games.

For GTA5 all you need to do to enable triple buffering is turn on standard vsync in the drivers and then alt+tab out and back into the game once you've loaded it up.

Game may have a memory leak either software related or due to PC configuration. A lot of people have reported it. R* Support
When I start the game RAM is at 4.2GB. By an hour or so it's close to 7GB. It then begins to stutter. I shut the game down and re-start. Hopefully this will get fixed.

2GB cards should have no problem running textures on very high.

makes a night and day difference from normal, no hit at all with my GTX 670.

been playing with textures on very high lately

virtually no real hit on performance from high, but that article about fluidity was right. there's a certain stutter that wasnt there before, kinda like very little mini freezes from time to time

guessing those might come when it spikes and exceeds vram

game has crashed on me once after using them too

The game claims that it's using like 2200-2300 MB of VRAM but it's still working fine. MSI afterburner usually shows around 1600 MB of VRAM usage.
