Think I'll keep my single 980Ti for a while.

Not sure when my next upgrade will be.

980Ti SLI could be possible on my board too.

I run a 780Ti SLI rig,

Im not sure so thought i would ask here. How does the performance (going by these specs) of one 1080 match / surpass 2x780 SLI ?

Gonna pass on Pascal with no HBM2. Volta it is. I'll consider looking at Polaris this year of they do match a 980 Ti at half the price.

Hope the price is good.
I'm gonna keep rocking my GTX 980 until the 1080Ti hits. Need to see those benchmarks.

I'm locked into NVidia cards anyway thanks to GSync so I guess I have no other choice.

if this is anything like last time, it would be a mistake to upgrade to the 1080.

i will wait for the Ti version, and save myself the hassle of selling off the 1080 to finally get the speed increase i wanted out of it in the first place.

kind of bracing for disappointment when these release though, video card releases just haven't been all that exciting these past few years.

I believe it's the 980 Ti owners like myself who are disgruntled. This release cycle of 'minor upgrade from current top-line consumer card' followed by an actual Ti release a year later is exhausting. If this will be similar to how the 980 compared to the 780 Ti, then it is extremely underwhelming for us.

yeah, this is exactly how i feel [980 Ti owner who bought the 980 when it came out as well lol].

when a new line of cards comes out, it feels like a joke that they're essentially targeting current performance levels with new architecture. [and by current, i mean performance levels we've had for the past few years really]

Amen. Owner of a 780 Ti, SLI 980s, and 980 Ti here. I just wish they would release the Ti cards at the same time (or a couple of months later) and not a year later, or at least provide a decent upgrade from the Ti -> newest top-tier non-Ti. If this will be like the 780 Ti to 980 then you're right, upgrading would be a massive mistake.

As with any new gpu launch, if you have the previous generations ti card, early adoption probably won't make sense. I tend to wait for the ti revisions, unless these cards can blow my 980ti out of the water, I'll be holding off for a year or more. "Roughly" doesn't sound like a great upgrade to me.

Anyone else feel like his guy's analysis is mostly fluff?

All he seems to have are a couple photos of the card's PCB, along with very basic stats like the Process Node size, amount of transistors, amount and type of ram. Most of this we already knew, and he is even speculating on the amount of cuda cores, noted by the (tbc) beside the cuda core numbers. Having these stats basically amounts to nothing in terms of him knowing how the card will actually perform. Especially when you compare these stats to the 9XX line and the 7XX line.

Nevermind that his price estimates are completely out of whack. What reasoning does he have to speculate that the 1070 will launch at $120-$220 more than the 970 launched for two years ago? I fully expect Nvidia to price the 1070 close to $329, or maybe $350.

Looking forward to finally seeing some real info on this soon. Still hopeful that a single 1070 will be able to come close to a 980 ti, but I could be wrong.

What would be a reasonable expectation of the release or announcement window of the new Titan? Holding off for now because I'd be using these for rendering the the VRAM is lower then the Titan X.

Q1 2017. Titans have consistently been announced around that time.

AMD made a dedicated web page for polaris. Not much new info though unfortunately. https://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/radeon-polaris Apparently polaris will be 14 nm finfet, while pascal will be 16 nm, which is interesting.

To clarify Nvidia is using the 16FF+ from TSMC, whereas AMD seems to be using the Samsung/GF 14nm process.

This chart is leaves it somewhat unclear because the Samsung process shown is LPE (and their HP process may have different transistor sizes), but it gives a rough idea.

In real terms there isn't a large difference in feature sizing, although in the past AMD often had more perf/area for a given process node. However, that difference definitely got reduced with the GCN 1.2 GPUs (or possibly Nvidia started caring more about die space efficiency).

Looking to upgrade from my GTX 970 since VR is a bit more demanding than I anticipated when I bought it originally. Just not sure what to go to.

I'd wait for benchmarks, but the 1070 seems like a logical progression for you.

So the 1080 is going to be around 500 bucks and be around the same speed as the 980ti.

...

... Condolences to those who waited. :|

At least there's Polaris! :D

I was so hyped but now I think my brain is starting to kick in rational mode and I will probably let the 1070 on the shelf at launch and see what Polaris does when it comes out.
My 660 still serves my day-to-day stuff for now.

It will definitely be faster than the 980 Ti, anyone claiming the contrary is delusional. The 500 dollar price though might be right.

But there's no guarantee Polaris is going to be much faster than 980Ti

I agree, WCCFtech news should be taken with a big grain of salt. They are masters of clickbait and SEO - and their comment sections makes you want to kill all humans, or yourself.

https://www.google.com/search?q=amd+polaris+performance - for me first four results are from wccftech. They know their SEO.

I really hope they make an ITX version of the 1070 like they did the 970 else I will need a new case

Call me when the cards with a real jump in performance come out.

Not gonna happen till AMD catches up.. same thing with Intel and cpus. No competition = no reason to waste R&D money

So the 1080 for $549 to $649. OK. 980 launched at 549, which was an improvement over the 780's $649.

At the same time, they're speculating the 1070 to be as fast as a 980, but from $449 to $549?? Considering that the 970 launched at $329 (and the 770 at $399)... oh boy...

One of these things is not like the other. If true (probs not), the 1070 is the new 980 (value).

I don't understand the "disappointment" thus far. One we don't know the benchmarks yet. Two, GP104 is an upgrade for GM204.

The jump for a 970 to a 1070 should be significant, likewise, for the 980 to 1080. It will probably be even bigger. Both should be a nice upgrade for existing 970/980 owners. You're going to be a getting 980Ti + performance at a substantially lower price and lower TPD.

When a comparable Pascal die to GM200 comes as a consumer GPU, that's when owners 980Ti should look to upgrade.

Yeah, I'm curious to see results of the new stuff too. Although I'm anticipating just waiting for a Ti.

I'm curious if they do (or maybe do better, I'm not sure I remember the issue with this) asynch compute and am really curious to see if they get better gains from DX12, since it seems like the 9-series cards aren't getting that much of a bump. At least not compared to AMD (I wonder if that has anything to do with AMD's DX11 drivers, though).

I'm thinking of upgrading my GPU for the first time. I'm rocking a Sapphire 280X now which I got in my pre-built PC. Curious to see the definitive pricing, and if rumours turn out right, I may be interested in a 1070. With it I would be just targeting good ol' fashioned 1080/60 maxed out for new games. (although I think the names could use improvement, especially the 1080 that will without a doubt be associated with 1080p.)

I think the 1070 will be a modest upgrade for my 670. Though I'm surprised how well the 670 is holding up for many games at high settings. (though the witcher 3 is making it go to the 40's/30's)

my 970 became inadequate as soon as I got a 144Hz monitor

What? Come on, 60 fps still looks great. It doesn't suddenly become shit because you have a higher head room. I have a 144hz with a 970 and I get above 60 for most games. The benefits of the monitor go beyond just the FPS.

I mean I get what your point is, but inadequate is reaching a bit don't you think?
