Update: Employee confirms it was just expiring Visa.

Previous Info:

Guerrila games might be announcing layoffs soon:

Hey all, some sad news from me: my time at Guerrilla (and potentially the Netherlands) is ending soon. I'm heartbroken to be in this difficult position, but the outpouring of love and support from my friends and my teammates in the past week has meant so, so much to me.

Every company is laying off staff in every industry because three guys with ChatGPT4 are more productive than a team of 30 humans.

Did anyone bother to read the follow-up tweets? I'm guessing not, because the main issue for Narae here is her visa is expiring. Plus, I've only ever seen Narae mention her circumstances, no one else.

That's a bit of a jump to conclusions. It's a single person leaving Guerilla which may very well be because she's laid off, it could be for personal reasons, or something else. I hope we don't start making threads every time a single person tweets they are sadly no longer working at a company.

Let's wait until we hear about more people before we start spreading that negativity.

Gonna need something more substantial than one senior community manager with an expiring visa tweeting before we can call this a report of layoffs.

I'd love to see the bloat these studios all must have. When you think Valve has less than 300 employees vs all these places. I wish people all the best but games studios are clearly so bloated and inefficient these days.

2024 ain't starting so hot

Edit: oh this one's just an expiring visa? 2024 still ain't starting hot, but this topic was badly misrepresented by op

I don't know if this specific case means a process of layoffs (look like a specific case) but there is a planned process of cuts/layoffs and even closure of Studios by SONY according to the leaked docs from Insomniac...... and all in a supposed record-breaking situation income and wonderful future of PlayStation.

We will see. But I am surprised by the number of people who rule out the posibility Sony is going to announce actions of this type or that it is going to be part of the process already seen and that has affected the industry in general.

P.S. SEGA has just announced the 15% cut from SEGA America.... After having presented some quite acceptable results.

This topic seems like it was created with nothing to stand for...it's just a single individual. Could be for a million reasons. Guerrila games might be announcing layoffs?

That said...the entire industry is doing it so i'm sure some sony studios will be affected as well unfortunately.

Yeah agreed. This doesn't warrant a thread not there's enough information to conclude anything.

I know some people on this forum are hoping Sony does a big layoff too so they can try to redirect the vitriol Microsoft earned. Until that happens, let's stick to talking about what has actually happened.

I hope it's not a dig at me. My opinion, on what layoffs in the industry deserve me (basically contempt and anger) and more so for companies in high-profit situations, is clear.
From there, OK, what you say is true, but also Is true that there is the same number of people wishing it would not happen or denying the possibility and not precisely because of their empathy towards those who lose their jobs but as a throwing weapon...

That said, I don't know why the possibility cannot be discussed considering the situation of the industry and, especially, that Sony itself has sent cuts and layoffs to all its Studios and even the possibility of closing Studios in a supposed situation of record income and idyllic situation.
Especially to shed light on the reasons for this process of layoffs and closure of Studios, which clearly does not have a single reason in the so-called "consolidation" of the industry.

Layoffs suck, but they are a common reality. Microsoft laying off 1,900 employees is not the issue. The issue was Microsoft acquiring a company and firing 1,500+ employees of the acquired company within 3 months.

A lot of folks warned against this type of mega-merger and industry consolidation. But people cheered them on, despite the potential risks, just so they could get years-old games on Game Pass.

The irony is that 1,900+ employees (1,900 families!) lost their jobs and Xbox gamers didn't even get those games on Game Pass.

Apart from that acquire-and-fire that people are pissed about, most understand the reality of business and the unfortunate truth of layoffs, which is common and becoming more and more common (unfortunately!). Sony is not exempt from that either and may very well fire some people down the road or even close off a studio like Media Molecule that has been a liability for some time.

People should expect many layoffs this year.

The economies around the world aren't getting any better (plus neither are the leaders)

That being said... this is one singular person and theres a lot of assumptions being made here. Maybe there weren't very good at what they do and this was an opportunity to remove them, it could also be the start of mass layoffs, we just really can't gleam much else from this other than assumptions and wild speculation

I don't know that an expiring visa is any indication of layoffs. Sometimes governments just decide to not renew work visas for foreign nationals. I've lost a few good employees because their visa expired. Lost a great automation engineer because the government elected to not renew her husband's H1-B, meaning her H-4 was also revoked. You just never know.

It feels disingenuous to come into a thread that was clearly not much of anything and jump in with, "Why are people saying this won't happen? It could. There were leaks". The only thing anyone in this thread did was point out that this was not evidence of layoffs because it was one person who said their visa was expiring and they had to leave the country. You were trying to make something out of a nothingburger and pointing fingers at shadows to do it.

It's not toward you, it's toward me, because, apparently i have a persecution complex :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I'm sure there will be layoffs from some of Sony's studios, but overall, Playstation studios has continued to expand year after year. They have the advantage of being a hardware seller. Where they get 100% of revenue from their own games plus the added benefit of enticing players to their ecosystem by releasing those games

That's why I don't get the argument why Sony's AAA games are unsustainable. Sony's revenue is mostly generated from MTX, subscriptions, and selling 3rd party software, not first party games. Their AAA games are a major reason why gamers join their ecosystem. For pretty much every other publisher, the AAA model is unsustainable, but not for Sony, imo

The reason is simpel here Visa is expired so she can not work in the Netherlands anymore. People dont want to read exactly what she said and try to blow it up like Guerrilla (ore Sony) is preparing for a wave of Layoffs. Some people i swear🤗
