I asked a group of hunters this question and they had no idea. Guess the percentage of deer that are killed during hunting season in the United States.

Less than 1%? Thousands of hunters won't dent millions of deer. And it's probably regulated so they cant kill 50 each and just dump them.
I like hearing people’s rationale at how they reached their conclusion. Mine was pretty different than yours.

Probably low. I know there is deer season for a reason. They're a menace. I lived in GA for 9 years and killing them was very much encouraged.

Mountain lions kill even more deer. And cars kill just as much as hunters anualy.

How are deer not extinct or something? They procreate like rabbits?

I selected 5%, it's around 8% according to the internet.

It can't be too high or you get population collapse. This stuff is regulated and monitored pretty closely, as it should be.

I couldn't find a direct percentage answer but looks like hunters kill 6 million a year out of a total population of 30 million in the US. So 20%?

I hope all that meat goes to good use. No point killing an animal unless you're going to turn it into food.

I guess this is where the internet fails. I input something like "how many deer as a percentage of population are hunted each year" and Google gave me the 8%. I worded it a different way and got 1-5%. Said for the gazillionth time, Google just sucks now, search sucks, these AI tools suck.

I suspect it's highly localized. I live in New Jersey which is a densely populated state so the number is probably higher. But in another state that is sparsely populated it probably isn't even 1%.

Hell, they may have to let the hunters kill a tad bit more around where I live. With the new massive road construction highway that getting built the last 5 years. There more deers out running in the road in being in ppl yards when they use to not be. But it cause of all the construction and how much land we just took from them.

”Determining the exact percentage of the U.S. deer population harvested during hunting seasons is challenging due to variations in deer populations and harvest rates across states. However, available data provides some insight:

• Hunter Success Rates: During the 2022-23 hunting season, approximately 41% of deer hunters in the U.S. successfully harvested at least one deer, with 17% taking two or more.

• Deer Population and Harvest Numbers: The U.S. deer population was estimated at about 35.2 million in 2021. In the 2020-21 season, hunters harvested an estimated 6.3 million white-tailed deer, marking the highest U.S. deer harvest since 2011.

Based on these figures, the harvest represented approximately 17.9% of the total deer population that year. It’s important to note that these numbers can fluctuate annually due to factors like changes in deer populations, hunting regulations, and environmental conditions.”

It should have been an exclamation point.
My guess is somewhere between 10-15%, but I don't know often hunting season happens or how explosive the population is. I'm ready for education

Edit:
Googled it and this thread was the top result.

OP...you a forest warrior?!?!
Also, a flank shot?
How far did you chase him (if this is you)?

Currently back where I grew up they have lifted the hunting season limit for bucks. Doe's are still restricted based on time and number...but the boy's are open season!

Sad thing is that a lot of places have rules to PREVENT wild game meat from being donated to feed the needy or sold.

And with Chronic Wasting Disease running through populations, there is a need for SOME regulation, but it's mostly overkill in my opinion.

That's sad. What a waste of good meat.

Not just good, but outstanding. Venison is the King of meats.

Probably not great that finding a clear answer to this is pretty hard. Almost as if someone is keen for that information not to be public.

I said less than 1% because these things are like rats in PA. They have to hire special hunters for the suburban areas to cull them. But it is probably highly dependent on the region.

I had no opinion of them until I moved to the east coast. I see them every single day and have to drive slow for the first 20 minutes because they'll just run out in front of you and destroy your car. I get why people hunt them, but I don't see the appeal, they're not even worthy to hunt other than getting rid of them, just annoying animals.

It's tough to track accurately. There are limits during deer season, but they're up to game wardens to enforce and game wardens can't be everywhere. They do know where the most activity tends to be, though. Most people where I live stay within the rules, though, because if you get caught breaking them them the state will confiscate your guns, vehicle and any other property in your possession when you're caught so it isn't worth the risk.

I'm a 911 dispatcher. It's been like 10 a day by vehicle in the last couple of weeks just where I live.

Deer meat is tasty but only when the kill was stealth. When they are doing beat where the deers are chased by dogs and all, the muscles are full of adrenaline when the animal is killed. It sucks.

You're a 911 dispatcher? Well hopefully you don't get this 911 call

Hit by caws only round hurr. There are some deer that live in my neighborhood though. They pop up on my security camera grazing and eating the wife's hosta's.
