Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Don't mean to be rude but I don't really have any interest in joining mumble or any other voice chat based anything for MMO playing. I like it nice and quiet with a chat log for communication. That isn't a problem for the guild is it?

I didn't use Mumble at all the prior two BWEs. I am from this BWE and forward, at least when I'm doing WvW... So long as you communicate well through the chat, it shouldn't be a huge issue. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Just a reminder for the new page:

So, in light of the news that Titan's Alliance is rolling on Gate of Madness, both GMs and all of the officers that could be reached (Maxrpg and I) got together and decided to talk things through.

We have decided that we're going to roll on Gate of Madness for the next Beta Weekend event.

Our reasoning for this last-minute change is simple;

1. We want to test how bad it gets when a huge alliance of 8 guilds rolls onto a server. There has been a lot of discussion in this thread about wanting to roll on a higher population server, and we want to prove once and for all that it is a very bad thing to be stuck queuing up for WvW. This means that during BWE3, we'll be testing those queues. Titan Alliance's goal is to dominate WvW, and fielding 8 guilds at once means the WvW maps are going to be filled to capacity very quickly.

2. We also want to see just how dominant they are. Some may disagree, but being on a server that always wins is actually a boring prospect, especially if we're never able to take part in it.

So, once again, for BWE3, anyone planning to roll on Henge of Denravi should be on GATE OF MADNESS now. We'll see just how bad things can get and make our decision then. I would like to add that Titan Alliance is only rolling on Gate during the BWE and may not actually play there during the actual launch. Our launch plan is still tentatively to stay on Gate until we see how things go.

Information about this whole Titan Alliance thing can be found here; http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/vvzs5/introducing_the_titan_alliance/–

We're going to have a little GAFGuild "Meet and Greet" event tonight at 9PM Eastern / 6 Pacific.
All you need to do is join the guild Mumble server:

Server Address: atl.eoreality.net
Port: 64742
(Please use your GAF username.)

The idea, in Vinci's words, is "to meet each other outside of the world of text and self-filtering. The idea is to get a feel for the sort of community we have here, rather than wait till launch and be surprised." We want to get people in the habit of using Mumble to communicate, so when the game actually launches everyone should have at least some degree of comfort with using this very excellent server provided by Ferny.

Nobody is required to talk, but the idea is to foster good relations with the guys you've been talking to on GAF for the last few months. If you're not comfortable, you don't have to show up but it's something we'd like people to participate in. If you want to just lurk and listen to people breathe, I suppose that's... creepy, but okay. Several of the officers will be there if you have any questions, comments, criticisms or lines you want me to read in my 'Batman' voice, but this is mostly just for GAFGuild to meet up and have fun.

Show up, speak up.

We'll also plan on having a little pre-BWE party on Friday, if people want to hang out and chat while waiting for the floodgates to open. No official time on that, just show up and we'll probably all be in there eager to get playing.

Now to sort through all of your overnight shenanigans.

Guys make sure to ask Retro to read poetry in his Batman voice. We do it all the time during podcasts. Hilarious!

"I think that I shall never see
a poem lovely as SWEAR TO ME!"

We have literally never done this.

Nah, Mumble is just there for people who want to use it. You're not required to use it. If you want to open it and just not talk, and just use it to listen to everyone else, you can do that too.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I always enjoyed hanging out in Vent / Teamspeak when playing MMOs. It's much more personable hearing people's voices, and it tends to be faster than typing, especially in combat.

Just fixed it myself.

Somebody changed it back, it says we're on Henge again. Not that it makes a difference.

I always love when I see a party member post in the game: Lojk ojtkdsafj

....

and then decipher after the fact that he simply spazzed out while trying to warn me that an enemy was coming up behind me.

Or somebody hits Enter to chat, then an enemy comes up on them and you get "w 4ddssssdaddddddawwd24wdawda1".

Had a guy once that would use my preferred 'inc' to mean 'incoming' but he would add a letter to the end each time. Finally I asked him what the letter meant and he said, "That's the rough direction they're coming from. 'N' means 'North,' and so on..."

Because of that damn guy, I started learning the cardinal directions of every map, even in games where there was no compass or anything.

And it's proven useful in a number of games, even single-player ones.

Another Grove video, with vista. The fucking music.

Holy shit. Replaces Ca'ial Brael as the prettiest tree-village I've ever seen. My wife is a huge fan of cities like Kelethin and Darnassus, this is gonna blow her mind.

That's actually not a bad system. I usually just shout "Adds". In something like WoW it was as simple as "Ahead" or "Behind" since, you know, most of the dungeons were just hallways. In other games it was usually to whatever direction relevant to where we were heading.

I'll have to give it a try. Based on what we've seen so far, GW2 Dungeons are going to be pretty complex.

Nice, shout outs to Ca'ial Brael and Kelethin in this thread!

Anyway, I'd really like to check out the Mumble meet up tonight so I'll figure out the time differences now. I'm not sure if I'll be joining the Gaf guild or getting one set up with a certain other community here (any ideas on that bufbaf?) but I definitely want to guest with you guys if I can.

For the meet and greet tomorrow are we also meeting somewhere ingame?
We were gonna do it in Mumble before the game actually went live. I just figured we could all get into Mumble and shoot the shit while waiting. If people want to organize a little and then work together in the game, that's fantastic.

I just feel bad we have this Mumble server and nobody uses it.

Argh, stop confusing me as to whether to roll a Charr or Silvari first.

I can already tell I'm going to be putting people on ignore for "Let's make like a tree" jokes.
I'm rooting for Team Pun on this one, Leaf them alone, oak-ay?

Nice, shout outs to Ca'ial Brael and Kelethin in this thread!
That's how GAFGuild rolls; old school and obscure nearly-dead MMOs.

The meet and greet is actually tonight (Thursday), and a good 18 hours before the Beta starts. Though it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a separate meet up in game at some point.

Nah, the last line in my little update mentions meeting up again just before the servers go live. See above.

Hmm, I canceled my pre-order with Amazon and pre-orded the digital version. I now cannot login to the launcher with my new account, it gives me an error about an invalid email address. My login info for my other pre-order doesn't receive this error.

Probably not much help, sorry. Try tweeting to them? They're usually quick with answers on there.

Ohh I see. I'll try to make it but might be busy tonight. I'll be using Mumble during the beta for sure though.

Can't wait to laugh at all your accents, especially the Americans from the southern states. (this wont get you kicked out of the guild right?)

Probably not unless you start getting mean about it.

Feel free to taunt the Southerners about losing the Civil War though, that's always good for a laugh all around.

I'm going to have my girlfriend introduce herself as me on mumble and get hella gems come launch at the meet and greet.

Hope I can make it. I usually will be on vent moreso than pay attention to chat, just habit and makes playing and asking tough questions (about classes and races) so much easier for me.

A lot of my time in WoW was spent on vent with the guild tab not even showing honestly.

Just saw there was a meet and greet tonight. Won't be able to make it. :( Going to a dark knight marathon! But I can't wait for the beta tomorrow, got two keys for friends to try to get them to try the game.

GF or just you making a girly voice?

My GF did that while I was playing online Uncharted and she got offended because everyone was just calling her a little boy.

Retro, I will not be mean about it. I'm sure everyone will just make "eh" jokes to me, even though I never end a sentence with "eh".

It's sad how that actually works.

Yep, Mumble is definitely easier in the heat of the moment. Plus, as corny as this sounds, it actually makes people friendlier. Same thing as Real Pic avatars; you associate the avatar with a person instead of just a name and icon. That'll go a long way towards increasing the life of the guild too.

Agree 100%. I think it's a better way to make a guild last, hell, I still keep in contact with guildies that I played WoW with and haven't touched that game in over a year. Trying to get them to play GW2!

I didn't think you'd actually be mean about it.

My only concern with accents is feeling bad asking people to repeat themselves or type what they're saying. I played with a guy in WoW who was Ukrainian and I always felt bad because his accent was just all over the place. Sometimes I swear he was speaking Ukrainian English with an Irish accent just to mess with me. Great guy though.

Has there been any news on optimization for this BWE?

I was going to wait till release but I don't mind playing it again if it's playable now.

Jira commented about getting improved FPS on his laptop, so chances are good there's been more optimization. I doubt they'd be flooding the internet with beta invites (I heard 100k at one point) if they thought the game was going to run like crap. At least, I hope so.

Yep, I still talk to guys I played WoW with and follow some of them on Facebook. My wife is the same way, going back to EQ. Dunno if we're just inclined towards the social aspect of the game or what.

Yay!

GAF's been running like total shit recently, and we can't really get it fixed under the current hardware so far, so I'm blowing a wad of cash to get a ~80 core xeon server array going for more headroom. I'll make a formal announcement soon when I have the dates of the move secured.

Hopefully less meditating gurus in our future.

I received a response from a GM:

If you are trying to log into the beta client, please know that you will not be able to do so right now. Any attempt to log into the client will result in errors.

Bunch of liars, my other account doesn't receive an error message.

You should receive an error because there's no Beta running though, that's probably what they mean. Might want to say that it's username-related again, you probably just got a generic "I can't log in" response.

Hey guys!

Though I am very excited for Guild Wars 2, I haven't been in the threads too much recently, due to the fact that I don't have the game prepurchased and it's kind of torture.

But, my curiosity has gotten the better of me. So I have a few very general questions for those who have been in the BWEs. How well is the game generally living up to the hype? Is WvW as good as I've heard? Do the dynamic events work as intended?

(I'd be right there with you if I could afford it right now.)

Read this: http://www.rpgsite.net/articles/368-guild-wars-2-beta-impressions

My thoughts.

Game lives up to the hype. A few optimization issues and bugs, but it's a real Beta, not one of those "play the game early" Betas that most MMOs have. Gameplay wise, everything is great, and expected to improve in the next BWE (every class has gotten a once-over).

WvW is great, and there was a lot less Zerging going on than originally anticipated (and we've seen videos of how the zerg mentality can backfire too). Some frame rate issues when you get a ton of people, like taking down a keep or something, but that's optimization stuff and they're working on it.

Dynamic Events work as intended, but people are too stuck in the old MMO mentality to stick around and see them chain into each other or even see the outcome of their hard work. If you do get a chance to play, remember to stick around for a minute or two and see what the NPCs do.

Otherwise DEs are a blast, especially when they chain together.

I'd be right there with you if I could afford it right now.

There are Beta Keys floating all over the interwebs, follow @GuildWars2 on twitter, they usually post about the big ones. Might be a few GAFers with keys they aren't using too (Dusky just mentioned one, PM him)

Sorry just gave it away :(.

I'm sure there are still a few keys around though.
