Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Thanks for the impressions guys. I've been following the game for about three or four years now. Whenever the site came up with the Elementalist and the Warrior, anyway. It's good to hear that it's worth the wait.

Unfortunately, the side effect of "not being able to afford it" is also "living with my parents (in the backwoods with Satellite internet) after graduation until I find a job". So I think I'll leave the beta keys to people who'll actually be able to play. Thanks a lot for letting me know about them, though.

Honestly, I think there's a difference between a game living up to a hype and living up to its promises. Does it live up to the hype? The answer for this will be always no because hype is immeasurable. Does the game live up to its promises? For GW2, I would say yes.

"Most" of it's promises ^^.

Through voice, we're also able to avoid the uncomfortable moment when a young American says, "Why do you keep putting a 'u' in so many words? At first I thought it was a typo, but you keep doing it..."

I've seen this happen at least twice.

I'd say it's still too early to tell. Same trap every MMO fan has gotton caught up in. The game is great so far, but we've only seen a tiny slice of it.

24/30 in HoM.....1 more weapon for +1 (have 200 warsupply), 1 more Mini for +2, and that stupid tree singer protection quest to complete with challenge for +3. So close :D

update: minipets done :D lol 1 plat left. Up to 220 war supply, almost there.....then its the trees i have been putting off for weeks.

I disagree. We have seen virtually every system the game has, from PvE, Dynamic Events, Hearts, downleveling, combat, abilities, PVP, WvW, plus all the bits and ends GW2 adds over other MMORPGS. The only thing we haven't seen yet is the rest of the content, but there's very little chance that there will be huge differences with what we've played so far. I insist, there's people in two camps, those of us that already love what we've seen, and those that are waiting for... something, and believe all us are as well. I'm afraid the latter are going to be disappointed. If you don't like the game already, chances are you never will.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but what a sweet story:

http://wildboarinn.net/2012/07/18/my-gw2-home-sanctum-of-rall/

Quite touching indeed, he seemed like an awesome guy. While the story ends on a positive note, I also feel sad (and I do realize this sounds somewhat shallow, considering) that he did not get to play GW2; he really seemed to look forward to it. :(

I didn't think you'd actually be mean about it.

My only concern with accents is feeling bad asking people to repeat themselves or type what they're saying. I played with a guy in WoW who was Ukrainian and I always felt bad because his accent was just all over the place. Sometimes I swear he was speaking Ukrainian English with an Irish accent just to mess with me. Great guy though.

Don't worry, Retro, I will remove your fear of doing so quickly enough, or you won't understand half of what I say. :D A native-speaker friend of mine seems to understand me pretty well, but I wonder how much that comes from common ground.

Also, I will be the one asking sometimes as well. Don't worry, I will not do it in the middle of something important, so as to not disturb flow.

Vinci sent me a PM earlier with a suggestion, and after talking to the GMs and Officers, everyone thought this was a really cool idea.

We're going to have a little GAFGuild "Meet and Greet" event tomorrow night at 9PM Eastern / 6 Pacific.
All you need to do is join the guild Mumble server:

Damn. I would absolutely love to attend this, but that would mean starting at 3:00 AM Spanish hour, and I have to get up at 6:30 for work. :/ I guess there's no chance to do something similar around tomorrow morning your time (my afternoon/evening)?

Also, if I'm able later today (say, in a hour or two), I may drop by the server to see if anyone's there. I'm not sure I'll be able to, though.

Not saying I don't, but it's silly to say that a MMO delivers it's promises before hitting level cap, and even sillier saying it before release. Reviewers get bombarded by people when they review MMOs a week after release for this very reason.

I will be attending the GAF meet and greet, even if I may not be playing in the GAF guild.

Would love to attend the meet and greet, but won't be able to make it due to vacation.

Will definitely be in Mumble when the game goes live. Its needed IMO for any pvp. If not, its a hell of a disadvantage.

Why? If I started playing Arkham Asylum and two hours in I said it delivered on the hype, am I being unreasonable? Should I wait until I finish it to make a judgement call on the gameplay I'm already experiencing? I'm not a reviewer; I don't need to play the entire game, because I'm not saying the entire game is perfect; just that it did delivered what it promised. Sure, things can get sour like ME3's ending debacle, but if the game promised solid gameplay and I'm experiencing solid gameplay, it simply delivered it.

Of course, there's a couple of things that we'll have to wait to see; namely, the endgame-related stuff. However, notice they have promised very little regarding endgame, with good reason: this is not a game designed to keep you hooked for 6-10 hours a day for the next 8 years.

I'm concerned about how Orr is going to work and scale. Beyond that, ANET has earned a good measure of trust for both how good the game is and how responsive they are.

I wil probably be on mumble as soon as I am up tomorrow morning, and will probably hop on after dinner tonight. You'll be playing this weekend, right?

Hey guys,

I posted earlier that we (Amazon.com) is selling Guild Wars 2 digitally:

www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MAZ0PU
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MAYXI0

You'll get a pre-order key which gives you access to the beta this weekend, as well as a $5 credit to use towards other video games on Amazon.com.

Standard

I had to QA our purchase path last night but I already have a key for the game. I've embedded the Standard edition key above. This will not only get you into the Beta, but it will activate the full retail game when it launches. You'll get the 3 day head start, etc. etc.

I've only got 2 (one standard and one digital deluxe). Once someone claims the Standard I'll wait a bit and post the Digital Deluxe (don't want 1 person grabbing both).

Alternatively, if you find this post annoying let me know and I'll delete it, and give the digital deluxe away somewhere else, not trying to annoy anyone.

Cheers,
Tony

Anyone have that image with all the armor sets that you see in the character creation screen? Trying to find it in the thread but it seems to be somewhere deeply buried. :(

I think its good for people to be skeptical. There have been many MMOs that promise and advertise the best pie in the world, only that the crust looks great, yet you bite passed that tasty crust and its a turd.

There have been unfortunately a few mmos that i can think off on hand that have conditioned players to be skeptical for more than just the first few levels of content.

*warning opinions!*

AoC: Great for 1-20 then all that polish and production level goes away.
FF14: looks great, great music. but unfortunately the UI, world design, and content were all a mess.(from what i hear much better now)
SToR: Great single player game, but that is all i could enjoy out of it.
Warhammer: God i loved the pvp, outside of that not much to drive subscriptions.

Im really looking forward to GW2, and im fine if we do discover that the game is really short or end game is faulty. There is no sub fee, so i dont mind if i have to wait for some content fix or expansion. I can hop in and out of the game without having that nagging feeling of having to pay that subscription fee to wait for fixes.

Know whats best about being skeptical? Being skeptical about a product to find out you love it in the end. Hope this game does that for a lot of people.

Precisely. People have fallen into this trap so many times before. I'm optomistic about the game, but I'm also not going to overblow my expectations. I'm also a bit cautious, cause of last beta I still think the game needed quite a bit more time in the oven. The august release date was a surprise to me. Along with the concern that endgame might be a flop (Will WvWvW remain interesting? Hows the PvE options etc), I'm going to keep my frothing in check.

Aww, taken.

Also, I don't think anyone would be annoyed by free GW2!

I wish I had any idea how to redeem... QQ

For those that haven't played the game yet, I would highly recommend rolling human, charr,or norn only for the fact that Asura and sylvari starting areas may have an ass ton of people with them being playable for the first time.

Who knows though. It may not matter at all with ANets new found alien server tech.

My goals of this BWE.

1. Roll a silvari just to get the customize options down so I know what I'm making for release.
2. Test supposed trait changes fot the classes I'm interested in (Rogue/Ranger)
3. See how packed WvWvW is.

I'll be going human. I'm sure it will matter when it comes to frame rate even if it doesn't matter when it comes to server lag.

BWE3 I will be:

1. Roll Sylvari because I want to save Asura for my launch char
2. Probably roll Mesmer again so I can test any changes
3. Try to form a Tournament group
4. Finish that WvWvW dungeon

My goals of this BWE.

2. Test supposed trait changes fot the classes I'm interested in (Rogue/Ranger)
3. See how packed WvWvW is.

Mine are:

1. Roll a Sylvari, get through the tutorial, and get the hell out of their zone as quickly as possible. Probably will head for the Norn starting area to hang out with a friend of mine.

2. Dedicate myself to experiencing the parts of the game I have virtually ignored over the prior BWEs; ie. everything other than WvW. Get a feel for how the game as a whole works.

3. Make my Engineer and see how things have changed.

For BWE3, I plan to:

1. Roll a Norn Warrior. I need to spend a good chunk of time and see if I can condition myself to get past their slow, lumbering animations. I really want to roll a Norn Warrior at launch, but I have to know I'm not gonna blow him up at Level 20 when the bulky plod gets on my nerves. I had to do the same thing with Tauren before Cataclysm added Cowadins (didn't work though).

2. Roll a Sylvari. Go Immediately to Queensdale. Do not pass Grove. Do not expect 30fps.
Probably a Thief, as I didn't spend much time with them in the last beta. Maybe even a Ranger, just to see how they worked out.

3. Tinker with my Human Guardian's appearance options one last time, and see what kind of changes they made. As far as appearance goes, any input you guys want to give is welcome; http://i.imgur.com/jBnNo.jpg

4. Roll something with my brother, who finally got his own key, and tear up some WvW.

5. Cry that it's going to be another month before we get to play again.

Aside from the images linked below, perhaps you also wanted this? It's a image with all of the sets in it:

Well, my opinion is that, since I already love what's there, and there is no subscription fee, I've already got my money's worth (and more) with what's in. Not having a subscription means that the game will deliver even if there's not the huge endgame many people are expecting.
Frankly, for me the problems with past MMOs, like TOR, are 1) that the combat is a reskinned WoW, with everything bad and outdated about it, 2) that there's really four classes in the entire game, all of them feeling quite formulaic and really stripped. Of course, having a subscription fee is the final nail on a coffin that was already pretty much nailed shut.
I don't see how this or the other MMOs you mention are comparable to GW2, when the problems you encountered with them seem like they should be hugely noticeable from level 1 (the possible exception being AoC). What I'm saying is that I don't see how the kind of betas we've had with GW2 wouldn't expose those glaring problems almost immediately, or certainly withing the tens of hours many players have sunk into it.

By the way, the problem with being skeptical is that it colors your perception. Sure, if the game truly is a flop, a skeptical person will have less of a disappointment than a hyped one; however, simply by being skeptical, a person will skew his/her perception of the game and its many small details; a hyped one will, rather, enjoy each one. Your preconception of the game becomes, then, self-fulfilling to an extent.

Also, what the heck, I'd rather be excited for several months than cynical. Why am I even justifying something so obvious? :P

Making homemade Mac and Cheese for dinner... because it tastes better the next day and it will last us all weekend, thus negating the need to cook. If we get sick of it, we'll just order pizza.

Also, what the heck, I'd rather be excited for several months than cynical. Why am I even justifying something so obvious? :P

Because you've got the Kool-aid running intravenously, man. Can't be excited for anything without being on something that's altering your perceptions.

Junkie.

Just don't get your hype out of control like so many others. I take my friends opinions more than anything and our guild forum has alot of impressions from players who were big GW fans and those who have been doing the GW2 beta. They have given far more realistic expectations for the game than some of the overly glowing worship the game has gotten here. As long as you keep your expectations in check things are going to be fine... and expect rough patches during the first few months.

But of course there is no sub fee either so it's not like the other games where you have to drop them cold turkey. So many MMOs have actually been good but because of the sub fee folks just abandon it and stay away even when those past games did fix and improve things. GW2 will be yours forever to enjoy at your own pace with no need for extra investment. You won't have that cloud over you head that you get with many MMO's where you have to always be wondering if your getting your moneys worth.

Purchasing Gems during Beta Weekend Event 3
This upcoming Beta Weekend Event—July 20 to July 22—we will test our Gem Store billing system in a live environment. While we won’t give away any free gems for the beta, you can purchase gems via the Gem Store that will carry over to your account when Guild Wars 2 launches.
Here are a couple of points to keep in mind:

Any gems you purchase are bound to the account you bought them on.
If you play on a promotional account, such as those created with press- or BWE3-specific keys, you will need to add a retail key to that account to be able to access the gems when the game launches.
To add a retail key to your account, please follow these steps:
Go to https://register.guildwars2.com.
Enter your key in the field and click “Yes” when asked if you have a Guild Wars account. (The account you created with your promotional key is your Guild Wars account.)
Enter the e-mail address and password you used when you registered your promotional key and created your initial account and click “Next.”

This is where I am. I tried the whole cynical approach years ago. Guess what? I was bored. I'd rather have fun all the way up to a game's release, be disappointed if it flops, and move on. I mean, as long as people don't take it personally when a game isn't what they wanted it to be, what's the harm?

People just take shit too seriously.

EDIT@BattleMonkey: We've had some people from the original Guild Wars be 'realistic' about Guild Wars 2. Guess what? Their opinion doesn't change what we've experienced for ourselves while playing it. They're allowed to have a different opinion, but it doesn't make either opinion right or wrong. This game is not like Guild Wars, so having experience or not having experience with it is borderline trivial.

I am extremely stoked for this game after about 50 hours of play through the two BWEs. It is a good thing there is no subscription because I would have gone with the six month deal. I love the game but I am guessing I'll play it too intensely for a month then burn out and not play for a few months. I am going to have to pace myself but I don't see it happening. The game is too good.
