I haven't really seen anything beyond the classes and earlier videos of game play, is the new battles system going to be overly complex? I keep seeing you guys mention traits and such and have no idea what that is. I imagine the game should do a good job at introducing it in the tutorial, hopefully. I'm a veteran of GW1 PVE so hopefully it's not too alien. The main thing I know about for this game is that your weapon controls what skills you can have equipped so I presume you can macro the full skill bar for each weapon to swap bars on the fly. What is this trait stuff? and is there anything else new to the combat system?

Trait points are a replacement for attribute points from GW1. Attributes provided linear bonuses to certain weapon and skill types, and a certain point investment was required to wield higher level weapons of that category effectively. Traits offer similar categories for point investment and are accumulated in the same way as attribute points, but the point requirement for weapons is gone, and the bonuses can be customized at each major trait unlock.

There's only one major difference in how they're spent. In GW1, you could respec all of your attribute points for free at any time in a city or outpost. In GW2, you have to spend money to respec.

Finally got to listen to the podcast, great job guys. I think I liked the second half better, you guys started to have more of a conversation and back and forth rather than just the same question to each person. But great job overall!

Also to add to this, I believe you can change the Major traits at any time out of combat, you just can’t reallocate the points to different lines.

An hour for an MMORPG is ridiculous. The man's played several MMOs, including GW1, and GW1 had one of the slowest starts ever. He should know better. These games are designed to be played for very long amounts of time. I just find anyone giving impressions of a game like GW2 after an hour of playtime a bit silly.
*note I haven't listened to the podcast yet, just going by what I've heard

Well he states that he was prepared to play all weekend but the initial play really failed to pique his interest to continue.

to the beta testers:
i thinking about getting a i5 2500k, gtx 560ti, 8 gig ram.
would the game run maxed with this hardware?

Beta testers are under NDA and are not supposed to even mention that they are in the Beta.
Edit: I guess the forum anonymity makes you feel safe enough?

Those specs would run BF3 pretty damn well though, so I can only assume based off of what I've seen of the game's visuals that you would be fine.

I honestly don't see how this could happen. Not talking about just GW2, but with any game. If I look forward to playing a game, the game would have to do something terrably harsh to turn me off of it in the first hour. I wouldn't just stop playing after an hour because it simply didn't pique my interest. That just seems crazy. :lol

I feel like the more you look forward to something, the less likely it is you will enjoy it when it actually arrives (90 percent of the time). The game isn't finished yet, and he was expecting the next great MMORPG, and got an unfinished sequel still in development

I agree, especially in the case of an MMO where it's a given that the first hour or so will be your standard tutorial affair. The fact that he was looking forward to playing and didn't give it more than an hour seems a bit odd.

I can understand being dissapointed, that happens with just about every game that hits the market. But to walk into a game, a beta no less, and fault it because you weren't drawn in in the first hour of an MMO just seems crazy. I can understand overhyping the game for yourself and then being let down, but with an MMO I can't see how this can happen in the first hour. "Dammit this one skill and this one quest is stupid, I'm done!"

Jeff's kinda old, somewhat jaded, and he has a lot to do. I can see how he might not dedicate that much time to it, especially in beta, but it's sad that he didn't anyway. Or at least that he didn't let anyone else play instead.

Is anyone has nervous as I am about pre-ordering the CE from Gamestop? I'm sort of holding out until much later when a larger list is revealed, but I've heard stories about stuff going missing from these collector editions...

The one by me is always good about this stuff, but then again this store also doesn't do the whole 'opened new games' thing that I hear about all the time.

What were the impressions?

I was surprised that he was kinda making fun of the dynamic events (beginner ones) when he only played like an hour. Also he mentioned it was boring mashing 1 all the time and he felt that skills attached to weapon were not as good as just picking the skills you want.

He seemed like he was done with the game after 1 hour of beta gameplay.

Whatever, I think he plays console games more than pc or mmos.

Ballyhoo over Jeff's Giant Bombcast review

I know as someone with a shit ton of posts in the thread, a seat on the podcast and a veritable slew of posts across GAF and the internet in support of this game, this will sound like Guild Wars 2 Super Fanboy Defense springing to action, but...

How can anyone play any game that isn't a tabletop, social or mobile game for only an hour and make anything close to a judgement call on it? That's just barely enough time to get out of the tutorial area in most games. And this being an MMO, the tutorial areas are likely longer and the starting areas likely more crowded. After an hour, how could he be higher than level 5? In a game with a level cap that reaches 80? Hell, there were reports from beta that after 5 or 6 hours of play, their in-game progress was only 1%. An hour of play is like taking a tiny sliver of a meal and saying you dislike the whole thing.

It strikes me as wildly unprofessional for a reviewer to dismiss any game after spending so little time with it. There are games I hated from the get go and ended up returning to Gamefly in disgust, but never in an hour.

Kill Ten Rats was planning to do more crafting testing in the beta, and just posted an article about it today. Was about to share it with you guys, but since you asked, here it is; http://www.killtenrats.com/2012/03/27/gw2-crafting-in-the-march-beta/

Thanks for linking this. If inally got around to reading this and it is nice to hear about other crafts than just weaponsmith and armorsmith.

Cooking really sounds like it will be fun and challenging. 200+ recipes using meat sounds like a damn ton, when you figure in you have to both find or buy all of these ingredients and discover them. Will be fun finding some of the hard to find ingredients like the Charr's strawberries.

I dont know about any game, but for an MMO, what MMO has super fun-o-rama omg I cant get enough in the first few levels? They need to ease you into the world, especially in an MMO that is making significant gameplay and combat changes.

I didnt catch him saying he tried the structured or WvW PvP either. So, he's welcome to his opinion but it means zero to me. I'm not expecting to be floored by the level 1-5 content.

Thanks for responding. Ahhh it replaces attribute points. So now it solely influences the impact of your skills since it doesn't apply to weapons? Wait, you unlock traits instead of starting out with all of them at once and earning points to use on them per level up like in GW1? That would make you severely limited as to what skills are worth using early on in the game, no?

Paying for respec sounds potentially awful. I vaguely remember some of you complaining about that now but didn't know what you were talking about at the time. I guess it will depend on how many different builds I'll feel compelled to jump between and more importantly, how often but I had a few in GW1... Hopefully it will be dirt cheap but I don't see why they did this in the first place.

If he really doesn't like the social aspect of MMOs, or playing with others, then I can see why he didn't like GW2. The game really pushes the whole community aspect and playing together.

But if he doesn't like playing with others, I don't see why he doesn't just play an open world RPG or something, like Skyrim. Playing an MMO and avoiding anything that brings you in contact with other players seems rather pointless.

I know he did buy a lifetime sub to Star Trek Online, so his view on MMOs doesn't really fit with mine.

That's pretty much the gist of gaming journalism and the extent of any discourse. One hour in and all I get is a tutorial? Screw this game!

I think people are overreacting somewhat to Jeff's statements. They were in no way meant to be construed as a review. He made his comments in the context of a segment on the podcast where they talk about the games they played in the last week. GW2 was one of those games, so he talked about it. He only played for an hour, and it didn't excite him, so that's what he said. He was simply reporting on his subjective experience playing the game for a brief time, no more or less.

Yes, and no. The traits more effect your style of play than the skills themselves(though some do) So it could effect what skills you use, or you could end up not putting your traits into lines until you know how you like playing.

As for the cost, yes there were some people against it in the thread. I for one am not really against it, but it's one of those things where I think we need to see it's effect. I really don't think it will squash testing builds as much as people think, but we will have to see.

If you want to see more about traits you can toy with builds on http://gw2.luna-atra.fr/skills_tool/ It's a little out of date, but it gives you a general feel.

For me it wasn't so much that it was said about GW2 or even that it was his thoughts on the game. For me I just didn't understand how anyone could look forward to any game at all, and then just give up after an hour. Let alone a beta of an MMO, and to say the reason is because it didn't draw him in or pique his interest. That thought process just seems crazy to me.

Just watched Total Biscuit's Explorable Dungeon video (I've never been a huge PVE fan in WOW, with whack a mole for healing, how linear it was, it actually put me to sleep.)

Dear GOD this looks freaking amazing... everything is shaping to be so freaking PERFECT! :O

Jeff generally hates MMO's, people shouldn't worry.

There will be tons of hype backlash against this game when it comes out. The amount of blind hyperbole and hype that's been going for this game has been pretty crazy, and from what we are reading about the beta, lot of folks are going to be dissapointed if they don't put their expectations in check.

It'll be fine. Most (p)reviews have been fair and consistent to what GW2 will be. People won't stop being stupid, and you really can't account for that.

While I agree, there is no game that IS perfect (despite my previous comment) all games WILL have their issues. For me however, I know what I like in a game and to me, this is MY idea of perfect (when it comes to game mechanics & aesthetic.)

I'm so excited that I am buying a lifetime sub for all GAF members that buy the game. That's just how I roll. I love you guys that much!

Yeah, and it's a shame the Giant Bomb crew didn't let someone else play it; someone who would have given it the attention it deserved, rather than Jeff who's a pretty big console single player fanboy. I guess I'm just disappointed that my favorite podcast/gaming site(outside of GAF) has seemingly dismissed this game thus far. Hopefully they'll give it more attention later on.
They're definitely entitled to not like it though, but I'd like some justification other than "it didn't grab my interest after an hour".

Oh wow, I just realized something. The Digital Deluxe and CE should come with gems, not items that can be bought with gems that people might not want. Anyone agree?

I get that the point is to get people hooked on something they could have access to by buying more gems, but why limit it? How about saying, here's x number of gems, exchange them for gold or buy some items and come back for more if you think it's useful.

Come on Kayos! I meant folks that seem to want attention by trolling for it. I loved the podcast that you guys put on here.

@BrettWeir: How about some gems too? =D

I was thinking about that, but the spreadsheet I would need to create to keep track of distributed gems would be a burden in which I do not wish to take on. ;P

I think he meant that there are level 200+ recipes that use meat (A level 0 ingredient). That essentially means that in cooking, you'll still be using what's considered 'low level' ingredients even when you get higher up.

Also worth adding that a lot of the ingredients sound cumulative. You start off making Bread, which is a usable food item that gives you a buff, but it's also an ingredient in other recipes like Hamburgers. I can see cooking being very deep and actually using some real-world knowledge to get things done. Better start watching Good Eats episodes if you plan to take up cooking.

Hey! I'm offended by this comment. Come on.

Hey, even you have to admit that gaming journalism as a whole has a long way to go. Your article was honest and covered all of the points and you can't ask for more than that. Sadly, a lot of the gaming press leaves us doing exactly that.

I'm so excited that I am buying a lifetime sub for all GAF members that buy the game. That's just how I roll. I love you guys that much!

I could get on board with that, in addition to some actual exclusive in-game items that don't fizzle out after 5 hours. Sims 3 came with something like $10 worth of store points (the catch, of course, is that nothing cost less than $10), I could see ArenaNet basically saying "Okay, you bought the cool edition and spent some money, here's some free gems to get you started".

RE: Jeff

After a hour, you will have created your character and maybe unlocked the full set of skills off of your starting weapon. It is entirely possible that the starting weapon of his character just didn't mesh with him. I'm sure he'll give it a longer shot at launch. I find it hard to play MMO betas as well, because the thought of losing your character at the end of the weekend makes me less interested in the game.

I don't know where you guys are getting this idea that Jeff hates MMOs. He bought a lifetime sub for Star Trek online ffs. I have yet to play a MMO that requires grouping within the first hour, and I promise you that GW2 follows that tradition. I highly doubt that he didn't like it because he wanted to be by himself.

The Giantbomb team isn't into MMO's like the "average MMO-player" is into MMO's.
The things that excite us about these games mostly don't apply to them. They simply don't have the time to invest, nor do they have interest in any of the in-game communities that form. I don't fault them for it, either.

Out of all the staff, the only ones who I could seriously see giving this game a fair shot are Dave, and maybe Vinny.

Yeah I went back and re-read, I guess I read that wrong. It also made it seem like you could get higher level foods and then reverse engineer the foods to maybe get ingredients you hadn't seen yet. Overall it sounds like cooking is going to be very intense and very time consuming.

No love for Brad?

Yeah I was thinking Dave too, Vinny maybe. But I'm guessing Jeff will end up reviewing it if they review it at all. The other guys are pretty console oriented and not big into MMOs these days.

At least they will hopefully have an honest opinion from a "non-MMO" player-base and for those that might be curious.
