Yes, and no. The traits more effect your style of play than the skills themselves(though some do) So it could effect what skills you use, or you could end up not putting your traits into lines until you know how you like playing.

As for the cost, yes there were some people against it in the thread. I for one am not really against it, but it's one of those things where I think we need to see it's effect. I really don't think it will squash testing builds as much as people think, but we will have to see.

If you want to see more about traits you can toy with builds on http://gw2.luna-atra.fr/skills_tool/ It's a little out of date, but it gives you a general feel.

Hmm I think I'll have to see them applied to grasp it. I view builds as a style to play so I don't know what else you'd use traits for besides skills. Unfortunately, I can't look up anything here at work but I appreciate your responses. I'm sure it's something simple that one video will clear up.

I maybe used a poor choice of words. They do effect skills but for the most part not directly. Instead of "Drakes Breath(Ele fire Skill) deals 5% more damage" you mostly see things like "Deal 10% more damage while in Fire attunement" and "Deal 15% more damage to burning foe's".

Say you want to be a Bleed heavy Warrior you would want to take major traits like Attack of Opportunity(deal more damage to bleeding foe) or Deep Cuts(Bleeds you apply last 50% longer). And those are two choices out of 12 major traits that are just in the Warrior's Arms trait line.

Is there a character builder with the updated traits and abilities? Just saw the Curse trait video for guardians and the revamped + new traits looks wonderful. Most of the lackluster stuff's been dumped out for more interesting effects.

Not that I have seen. :/ Seemed like they were up pretty quickly after the first beta too.

I really, really hope TotalBiscuit sticks with his statement of making GW2 his "next MMO".

With 600000 sworn subscribers to his channel, it's basically amazing marketing for the game, and introducing tons and tons of people to the mechanics of GW2.

Thanks. I just remembered we for some weird reason have access to youtube here (new job) so I checked out that link Steve just posted. So the left skill bar changes by weapon while the right skill bar stays the same regardless what weapon you have equipped, the utility bar. Traits are basically attributes from part one like you said but are a lot deeper and more diverse. Got it. So now the question is how many Trait points can you obtain total? I assume you get both skill points and trait points by leveling up.

70 trait points at max level; you start earning them at level 11 and get one per level.

Skill points are earned by completing Skill challenges, which are marked with a chevron on the world map. Skills cost from 1 point for your basic utility skill to 25 points for some elite skills.

He seems to love it thus far, plus, if he is anything like me quiting WoW has left a gap no other game has been able to fill, until now...

Funny that arguably his Cata beta footage "made" his channel (he indicates that's when his subs really took off) and now he will be using that clout to help make GW2 a bigger success.

After reading that image from the beta forums where Colin Johanson addresses microtransactions I really don't understand why people ever had a problem with the cash shop. In GW1 people could buy all of their skills instead of earning them?!!?!?!?! But people are flipping out about people potentially buying gold? I only played GW1 a little but I never knew that part, after hearing about that, I just don't know why people were so worried with the small pointless stuff in the GW2 cash shop.

Link to image. Saw it on Guru, but it's from Reddit I guess.

The skills could only be used in PvP. The main concern of the cash shop has been more geared towards PvE (rez orbs, exp boosts, mystic chests, etc.)

I get that, but I would think people would be more worried about people getting an advantage in PvP more than PvE. And far and away the biggest concern I saw about the GW2 cash shop was buying influence for perks in WvW(With gold received from trading bought gems).

TotalBiscuit is a hype man. He wants you to be hyped so you watch his videos. I don't particularly trust that statement.

He wants you to be hyped because he's hyped. I have no reason to think he's lying. He played the game and enjoyed it, we watched him play and enjoy it.

Shed of news... I asked about the mobile app that they had shown off awhile ago.

Got a response from them via Twitter.

@djnoctis We are still working on it, but we don't have details on further information at this point. ~RB2

Super off topic but thought I would throw this out to my GW2 buddies... I got two Dota2 invites that i'm not using so if anyone is real interested in getting to play this game and will be making good use of it then let me know. Just PM me.

Thanks, Retro. Is there a cap on skill points? or can you earn enough to buy every skill if you wanted to?

You can gain more than enough skill points to unlock every skill.

Good. I figured, but had to make sure. So now it comes down to builds. I hope PVX gets some good stuff up for this game. Actually, I just realized I only used them for heroes and there's no heroes in this game...going to be weird as GW1 is the only MMO I've played so never have tried a persistent world. Still, wouldn't mind seeing a compilation of builds people come up with.

Come up with your own based on your playstyle?

Meh, too time consuming. I'd rather just play and enjoy beasting. Maybe if I could look at all the skills and traits from work during idle hours but I don't want to waste all that time at home pouring through every scenario possible. There's probably an absurd amount of skills. Once I get familiar with the game and skills, I can always swap stuff around and tweak it.

Coming up with your own build is a large part of the fun of any game, and especially an MMO where you have a character you spend a lot of time with.

I am hoping a mele Ranger will be viable, thinking of Sword Dagger first set and Axe Warhorn secondary (that might be better for groups, with the ranged attack and buffs).

Seem's like the flames on traits are placeholders.

I may be alone on this, but I actually liked the simplicity of the flames. But it makes sense so you don't have to read each trait every time you want to change them.

Here is a video of a duel daggers Thief in PvP. It's pretty decent, it makes it seem like the stealth can last for a very long time.

Of course they're placeholders, each Trait needs a unique icon so you can quickly and easily know what you're choosing without needing to read it.

And nothing else for that matter. Also, it irked the hell out of me when NO ONE made ANY attempt to apply a DOT on him so he couldn't stealth.

I stopped watching after he killed the Necro, but I didn't see him change weapons either.

Thats because he keeps casting cloak and dagger.

Yeah for the most part, but at the very beginning he seemed to be in it fora while running back and forth on the platform.

I stopped watching after he killed the Necro, but I didn't see him change weapons either.

This is what bothered me the most. I guess I'm just happy to see anybody at least do half way decent in pvp :lol. Anything is better than the non stop longsword Mesmer videos we got after the first video.

The stealth in a 5 v 5 setting control point game seems stupid. Seems almost impossible to kill and maybe they wont do as much damage but being able to always avoid battle makes capping points seem easy

Yeah I was hoping for more. I've been playing a bit of TF2 while waiting for GW2 coincidentally. I wonder what GW2 Ranger equates to.

That title is pretty sensationalist. I was excited to read about the parallels, but TF2 is only mentioned in 2 sentences, amidst other examples of equal merit.

Yeah, they have mentioned that TF2 and MOBAs have played a massive influence in their overall class design in the past, so this isn't really new news.

When exactly will NC Soft respond to our beta applications?

You mean the sign up that was only open for 48 hours? About two weeks ago... I think they let in about 40,000? I think that was a rough estimate though.

The beta weekend for that was just this past weekend. The next beta weekend will be late April for the pre-purchasers.
