No reason flats wouldn't work with a fretless, I don't think. Not a bassist, but I do have a guitar with flats.

They do feel really strange- like a snake covered in graphite. I am not really tripping balls.

They feel like silk, make it ridiculously easy to move all over the neck, and change the feel and tone. It's honestly a hard thing to describe, but it's too good.

I play a Fender Precision with frets, so can't really say how it would work on a fretless. :(

Cool, I may have to try a set. Which brand did you pick?

The only reason I asked about fretless was that I read flatwounds were most fretless users choice of strings. I can't play a fretless either, my intonation sucks. I need my frets.

Interesting. Never thought of doing this. Other than feel, any noticeable differences? Tone? Playability? Setup and stretch time? Stability?

No string noise is the big reason for acoustic guitars— they're popular with jazz guitarists (who change chords a lot to play a melody with the different inversions). They do last longer and they have a different sound.

I have a guitar that I thought I might like to play more jazzy stuff with so I stuck those strings on it for some variety (vs my Les Pauls with roundwounds).

Cool. I'm gonna throw some on the strat this weekend.

Remember to re-intonate if you switch from a plain to a wound third. On the plus side, if your strat has vintage-style pickups the third string will now sound in balance instead of too loud.

Post em! This shouldn't be a discriminatory thread;)

thanks! well here's my acoustic that never leaves the house.

Oh yeah baby! That's one sexy Martin. I'm a total sucker for figured woods, so this gets me going.

I have a thing for Taylor's as well. Great taste.

Sounds lovely— surprised at how good it sounds finger picked, I associate dreads so much with flat picking.

My two favourite acoustics are a Martin 000-28EC and a 14-fret OOO or OM that also had a V-neck (like the EC) but was $1000 cheaper. Third favourite is the Eastman OM I actually own, so I feel pretty lucky.

While I love other people playing Taylors, I've yet to pick one up that sounded/felt right to me.

Randomly, was followed on Twitter today by a guitar-maintence person and I post absolutely nothing on Twitter that's guitar related. I think. Are you reading this thread and being an internet detective (go to my website, find a link to my Twitter, you don't have to be particularly good at internet detective-ing)!?

thanks Mixolydian for welcoming me to post my acoustic. i didn't know this was classified as figured wood, i always thought is was straight grained? out these cs-d28-12's, i think i saw only about 3 straight and the rest were figured patterns. i guess maybe i was incorrect =D

i'll post up my taylor when it out. (it's buried)

yeah, this guitar is very very powerful and has bell like highs. adi top needed a few years to break in but it's much better now than when first brought.
i prefer martins too. i actually brought an eastman before going all out on this martin, (it had 2 knots in in the back so i returned it, brought blind online)
i'm ok w/ taylor bc of the neck is so nice on pre 2001 models. after that, the necks were no longer hand carved and became much thicker. the bracing on the taylors became thicker which made the guitar was more durable but killed the sound.

that's what makes eastmans sound so good, they're made so thin. post up your eastman OM if you ever get a chance =)

Technically you're right. But if it's bookmatched and looks sexy, that's just what I say. Don't mind me.

oh no! i'm not sure all the terms, i wanted to keep up to date. lol

i was about to pick up an american deluxe tele during blk friday but held out bc i don't know how to play electric yet... but i heard some prefer the broadcaster pickups on the american standard. i guess people want the humming noise.

I am surprised I didn't link to it again; I rarely miss a chance at self-promotion. There are embedded photos earlier in the thread, so here's a link to it on Flickr.

I actually much prefer thick neck profiles to thin ones; the latter can lead to tremendous hand strain and then pain for me.

Anyone play around with the new Digitech Trio+?

I'm thinking of grabbing one for practice/traveling. The original was fun in the store but I never bought one because it didn't have a looper.

New one has a dedicated looper and can save songs=win?

So me and my dad decided we're going to buy a nice amp head/cab. Luckily he's buying the amp and I'm buying the cab. He settled on a mesa/boogie mark v 25. Now I just have to buy a 1x12, which are still like $450.

that looks like a beauty

Oh btw, in case you guys were wondering about the miku pedal. It's not that great. It has delay that kind of makes it weird to play. Also it doesn't always pick up what you're playing that well.

i just bought a pedaltrain novo 24 but haven't decided on a power supply yet. trying to limit spending and am considering just slapping a power strip on there and using a one-spot, anyone else do this?

As long as you don't get that hiss with the one spot or pedals acting weird, go for it!

It's a beauty for sure. I'm a sucker for a reverse headstock and it looks just great on there. I'm curious to hear how it sounds and plays.

The red looks much better in your photos than the official ones.
It is very pretty and very, very heavy. As it has a solid mahogany body it weighs quite a bit. It's heavier than my Les Paul Studio. But after playing it the guitar does have a warm, almost dark tone. You can coil tap to split the humbuckers which adds a bit of variety but it's still a pretty warm and solid sound. The Floyd Rose is great as usual and the guitar was pretty much in tune and the string height just about right.
The neck is just about right for me. Not too flat. And its width is good too, nice and comfortable. For the price it's an exceptional guitar. Even if it were £800 I'd say it was good value. A good buy.

Even though we got it a couple days ago, here's the new amp. I have to say, it sounds amazing. It does really nice clean sounds all the way to heavy distortion. Each of the two channels has three settings and they do make a good difference.

Although when I have the EQ off, and I use my LTD, it doesn't sound that great, but once I turn the EQ on, it sounds crazy good. Maybe its the active pickups, as every other guitar we have has passive pickups, I don't know.

It doesn't really matter, because it's amazing and I regret nothing.

Congrats on the new amp! Is the cabinet also new? I love Boogie amps. Did you find that it had a steep learning curve with all the discrete channel settings, or was it still pretty easy to learn to use?

Its really easy to use, it doesn't take long for me to find the sound I'm looking for. Both amp and cab are new. I ended up paying for the cab and my dad paid for the amp.

Out of interest I looked that amp up. It's really, really expensive! Over £1400 in the UK! It had better be good!
One day I'll get myself a good high class amp, but I'm happy with my Hughes and Kettner 18w Tubemeister and Bugera V22 for now.

I'm in the market for my first guitar in a few years. Previously I had an Epiphone Dot which I really enjoyed (had to sell it to pay rent :( doing better now though), but I'm not bound to any particular type of guitar. I'll be using it to record some ambient and electronic music (so plugging into Ableton / Logic and achieving effects in there), but I also will be using it while writing traditional pop songs. Plus it will just be satisfying to pick that skill back up (not that I was ever "skilled", but you know what I mean). I'm willing to go up to $500.

Have my eye on this PRS 245STPT (one of these colors... i tend to be a monochromatic guy but the cherry looks nice too)

They are supposed to be pretty good. I have a PRS SE 24 Floyd Rose which is pretty good. As always go to a store and play with one. If it feels nice go for it.

Did you like the Dot? How about a Casino or Sheraton?

If I had $500 for a new guitar I would probably get a Squier Jazzmaster or '72 Tele Thinline and pocket the difference.

Try to make a deal. You can usually get up to 15% off.

I've got a SE Custom 24 that I really like, too. It plays and sounds better than a lot of guitars for that price I think. You may be able to get an Epiphone Les Paul style, too, in that price range.

This SC on Reverb has a really nice top and is in your budget. Rever SE245

I've got a Zach Myers SE which is very similar and it's a fantastic guitar... the PRS SE line are well made with decent hardware and exacting attention to detail, ime, and the stock SE 245 pickups are very good (although I did replace mine with a set of Burstbuckers I had around the house, but I really didn't need to)... Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with any PRS, really...

Wow, thats a lot. You guys must get shafted when it comes mesa/boogie stuff. In the US, that amp retails for $1399.

Then again, I didn't pay for it. I got lucky because my dad wanted a new amp as well. Originally I was looking at the peavey 6505mh or maybe a panama shaman, which is more affordable., as I could get an amp and cab for under $1000.

Has anyone actually used the Gibson Robot Tuners (the G-Force, I guess?)? How well do they work? I hate tuning and I can pick up a set of the things for cheap and throw them on my SG.

I have a TronicalTune set for a six-in-line Fender-style. I think they're great. I love being able to jump into Drop-D, Open-G, etc. on the fly and back easily. A lot of players hate on them. I guess if you have perfect pitch and tune by ear, in all possible tunings, it's worthless to you, but otherwise I think people are using some kind of electronic device to tune their guitars and this is just an automatic version of that. I find they work perfectly well, but I also tune in a quiet home setting; I've heard complaints they can get "confused" playing live. The latest version is supposedly better and faster, but a lot of the ones on the secondary-market are dumped from the 2015 Gibsons that so many people hated. It can easily be removed and doesn't alter your headstock at all. If you can get it cheap, it's a nice experiment.
