On this note, someone asked a similar question on /m/ and got bitched out for being too /tg/. I was interested in what would probably be the most common units being fielded by the competition.
Things that you're going to want in a battle-grade Gunpla are:
- Ease of Repair/Replacement
- High Combat Effectiveness
- Low Cost
You're essentially min-maxing with actual money, right? You want the most effective model for the lowest price, but if you're going to be going at it at Damage Grade A then you're going to want a unit that can be easily replicated and repaired.
I'm not sure where everyone gets their Gunpla, but I've gotten some off of Amazon, and figure most players would probably wind up doing the same with Amazon being the most mainstream retailer that sells Gunpla. Looking through a few pages we have a decent amount of kits to work with. If you're interested at looking at what I'm referencing,
here is the data I'm looking at.
A few things become instantly apparent that would effect the Gunpla metagame, namely the abundance of nearly identical but superior units at lower price points. Why would anyone purchase the RX78, Alex or Ground Gundams when you can get the Mk-II for less? Why would you buy a Zudah when you can get a Zaku-II for nearly half the price? Why purchase a Gelgoog when you can get the Gelgoog Jager for less? Why pay $25 for a Gouf when you can get a Build Fighters Gouf for $17?
Players would primarily lean towards using customized mook suits like the GM, Z'Gok and Gouf due to how inexpensive and modular they are. Parts could be purchased and replaced because most of the kits are under $15. You'd get lots of GM/Guntank/Guncannon/Gyan/Hi-Zack kitbashes. Models like the GM Cardigan would be the norm as opposed to the exception, albeit with fewer shields.
There are a few powerhouses in this bracket that outright dominate the competition, though. Those being primarily:
Victory Gundam ($13.37) - Decent basic platform. High maneuverability, small silhouette and a beam shield. Would probably benefit from various minor customizations.
V2 Gundam ($15.36) - Much the same case as the Victory but with far greater speeds.
Gundam F91 ($13.39) - Highly maneuverable, small frame, with decent armaments and the MEPE will absolutely fuck with enemies.
Star Build Strike Gundam w/Plavsky Wing ($14.26) - Fantastic build that maximizes a balanced frame with unpredictable/unorthodox armaments. I could see this one being purchased just for the weapons.
Qubeley ($15.75) - Mother. Fucking. Funnels. Only 10 of them, but that's more than any other unit in this price range.
Gundam Exia ($15.87) -
TRANS-AM
Wing Gundam Zero ($18.33) - Has to be included on this list because it would easily become a staple of the American Gunpla metagame. With it's relatively low price and fantastically overpowered Twin Buster Rifle you can expect to see a billion players fielding variants of it.
All of these are available for under $20 and would probably become the backbone of the Gunpla metagame due to their effectiveness at a relatively low price.
For instance, you could kitbash any two of these models for less than it would cost to purchase a Jagd Doga, the Kshatriya or the ZZ Gundam. Would you feel safer in the ZZ or in a GN-Drive equipped F91 that leaves double the afterimages and moves at insane speeds? How about a custom Wing Qubeley Zero that uses funnels to keep enemies at a distance and then uses the Twin Buster to finish them off?
Shit would be intense. Basically you'd need a unit capable of countering most of these units in any combination. Maybe a GN Drive equipped Unicorn with funnels or something. Get some high-speed, long range I-Field beam action in there. Maybe you should just pony up and buy The O. It moves pretty fast and is completely coated in I-Field stuff. Or you could just fuck everyone and get a GP-02. Have fun surviving a nuke, asshole.
