Mobile Suit Gundam Wing 30th Anniversary Video -Operation 30th-

Great tribute from Bandai with tons of beautiful, new animation, all set to the great OP2 from the show. I like the beach sequence that fully leans into Wing's superhuman vision of these pilots - the bit where Heero pops a parachute late and just breaks his fall by rolling on the ground harkens back to an even more ridiculous sequence in the show where he does the same thing except he lands on the cliffside, tumbles down it, and then gets up at the end (... I'm also reminded of that time Wu Fei just shouted at a pack of hyenas to get out of his way for being weaklings and they just left).

Anyway, cool. I wonder what Bandai will have in store for us next year for Gundam X. I bet it will be great. :messenger_loudly_crying:

I love frozen teardrop mechs but I heard from those that read it that it is just a massive fan fiction and fucks up Duo Maxwell lore.

I love the way they animated the video though and would love to have that kind of animation any of the upcoming gundam shows.

Hopefully something is in the works Gundam TV shows have been in a very bad place quality wise for almost a decade

This looks awesome as well

WING is all cool factor, the actual writing is poor.

Wing was just okay to me. The first 18 episodes and the last 7 or 8 episodes are really good, but almost the entire rest of the 50-episode show was quite dull. At one point, it started to feel really repetitive with a "Gundam pilot(s) gets captured, then they free themselves, then they get captured again" loop. I also couldn't believe they blue ball'ed the audience from having all five pilots together in one fight until the very end.

They were also supposed to actually have episodes that fully went into the five pilots' pasts, but that ended up getting cut, so they end feeling less fleshed out and their initial motivation isn't ever really elaborated on much in as to how they got there (Endless Waltz dived into it a bit, but not that much). Also, had easily one of the least impressive body counts of significant characters of a Gundam series utilizing the "war is hell" theme.

Oh man, the main antagonist died, and like two characters' fathers both died. [Sarcasm]What a devastating conflict.[/Sarcasm]

I guess it gets the job done for those relatively new to the mecha genre as was likely the case for most people who first saw it on its original Toonami airing, but as I only saw it well after the fact and having already seen a bunch of other Gundam series and other mecha anime before getting to Wing, it didn't leave as strong an impression on me.

Gundam 00 had some flaws, but as Wing's spiritual successor/remake, it was far better in execution.

Wing def had issues (IMO....its middle of the road by Gundam standards) but I'd take it over Gundam 00 or most of the modern Gundam series

I thought the dialog in Gundam 00 was horrible I tried to watch it again recently
and couldn't even get past the first episode knowing that it only gets worse
as the second season completely goes to shit....It wasn't Seed Destiny bad but those last ten eps I was completely checked out

The White Fang was kinda meh but at least Gundam wing had "Waltz"

IMO....Its a E-Tier Wing clone with completely unlikeable and/or forgettable characters
(Saji Crossroad might be the worst Gundam character of all time)
the best part was the OST and HD visuals (which were new at the time)

We can agree to disagree on the rest, but this?!

Don't disrespect the champion of being a whiny little shit:

It says something when the Mary Sue of that series (Kira) hijacks the show halfway through and somehow it's "technically" an improvement to the first half as I'd rather be bored watching Kira just God Mode everything as opposed to having a headache listen to this asshole go on and on.

Also hilarious that this was the first Gif that came up for me. I guess even Google Images detests Shinn Asuka, LOL.

That was really cool.
I saw Endless Waltz back when it was current but then went back and saw the whole show a couple of years ago.
Time sure flies...

There were two people that could operate the zero system.

One of them nearly went insane because of it.

Look, I just felt like the pilots all had too much plot armor (not Kira in Seed Destiny levels of plot armor, but still there) and there was no suspense after a while.

Meanwhile, the main team of pilots and their allies in 00 legit felt like their lives were in danger at times, helped by the show not being a coward in killing a few of them off, and good lord, anytime Ali showed up? Dude was a fucking menace. He literally just walks into one scene and just fatally shoots a major antagonist dead in a matter of seconds.

While I do agree Season 2 wasn't as strong as Season 1, it was still better than most of Wing to me. Also I loved the final fight using:

Ribbons essentially having the original Gundam design, on top of Ribbons' Japanese VA being the one who also voiced Amuro of the original series.

I realized I'm really not a Gundam fan, more just a Gundam Wing and G Gundam fan. I get being labeled just a Toonami fan based off that, but I think it's more than that. I think I liked the more experimental, one-off, not-attached to continuity projects they did in the mid 90s. I have After War Gundam X on DVD and intend to watch it soon.

I used to think Gundam Wing was pretty bad but I watched it again recently and I enjoyed it a lot. The soundtrack is just banger after banger, and I like the basic premise of the five different pilots, and how they are lone wolves at the beginning but then work together at times, while at other times they don't even have their respective Gundams and have to use other mechs or basically just hide out somewhere. Unfortunately this does means characters disappear for too long so you end up with quite a few "*insert pilot/Gundam" is back! episodes.

Worst thing is the convoluted plot and how it just introduces way too many factions and then there are factions within factions, and then like proxy factions. Makes no fucking sense at times. It also jumps between space, Earth and the colonies almost every episode towards the end. But overall I think the tone and style and enjoyable characters keep it together.

Agreed.

00 handled the characters' individual storylines better and more maturely.

Now regarding that plot armor..00 had its own amount of wildly unbelievable shit.

  • Lockon dies only to be replaced by his twin brother...lazy AF.
  • Celestial Being's insane level of technology AI and quantum technology.
  • Trans-Am system, very reminiscent of the Zero system. Very OP.

That said, even with the innovator narrative 00's plot was way more coherent and focused than Wing, resulting in a more complete and fulfilling conclusion.

Also, both Endless Waltz and Awakening of Trailblazer were masterpieces. I'd put them on the level with Char's attack.

Regarding Lockon:

They set up Lyle really early on. Neil is visiting a grave, and IIRC he sees someone else has already placed flowers there. Then we see someone who looks exactly like Neil watching nearby.

I felt they did a good job differentiating Lyle from Neil. Neil was consumed by revenge which contributed to his desth, and he never really fully opened up to romance, plus he was Setsuna's best friend. Lyle on the other hand was able to control his desire for revenge, did enter a romantic relationship with Anew (even if it ended badly), and he nearly murders Setsuna for killing Anew, and even if he ultimately forgave him, their level of friendship never reached the level that Neil and Setsuna had. Also, Feldt and (likely) Tieria had feelings for Neil, whereas they do not have them for Lyle even if IIRC Feldt was briefly conflicted on this but Lyle made it clear to her that he is not Neil.

I understand if you're just not a fan of the "Backup Twin" trope, but I do feel this was one of the best executed versions of said trope.

Also a million times better than Seed Destiny just flat out resurrecting Mu La Flaga as he was DEFINITELY DEAD at the end of Seed, so they had to make the recap movies retcon his destroyed helmet being shown or something like that.
