HAAK Xbox port abandoned after devs have been stuck for 14 months in trying to publish the game, even though port finished in two weeks

Imagine being a professional, making a living out of your business, and waiting idly for months for things to make progress. Simply shows they didn't care to begin with. They cared about getting some attention though.

When you really care, and it is your job, you find a way. You find contacts, you become very insistent with people, you setup weekly meetings... and get things done. That's how I do things, and believe me, they get done. I would have been fired (or pushed towards the exit) a long time ago if I managed problems like these guys do.

Oh no, I'm glad that MS is addressing the backend issue with their dev portal. However, I'm not okay with this response from the dev. I think it's kinda unprofessional.

They sound extremely frustrated to me. They also mention "companies" so I wonder if this is an issue going on behind the scenes with more than just Xbox. For this particular case, the developer reported backend errors which was ignored until they went public with the problem. Due to this, the developer sees this as a problem that is likely to be ongoing and does not want to interact with it again.

I understand the dev's position. If they had did the opposite, it would look like they just threatened to burn the bridges to caught attention in order to got their problem solved. Instead, they're firm in their position. If they had not published the answer, it would look even more professional of them, the right thing here would be silent after their statement. But I understand the urge to do it after being called incompetent because of a Microsoft bug. One more reason to not get in bed with them.

Total failure of communication and immediacy from Redmond is also a reason why biggest Asian games (regardless of your opinion about them) like ZZZ/Genshin/HSR are skipping Xbox entirely. Who wants to randomly hang for months on some issue just because John/Jane Xbox is too busy with gamepassing CoD and don't have time to check that strange email written in Mandarin? Yeah, nobody.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I get their frustration, and sadly enough, I've been in a somewhat similar position some years back (not as severe as this one, though). However, I don't believe the right approach is to go 'scorched earth' on Microsoft and essentially burn all bridges with them in such a public way, even if they no longer plan on releasing the game on Xbox. This basically tells other platform holders and potential publishers that they're not a trustworthy partner and should be wary.

But maybe it's just my corporate mindset talking here... and I agree that MS should improve their dev partner processes.

Oh yeah I agree. I meant good MS is owning it and trying to make it right. The dev response is weirdly hostile and unprofessional. They got some free publicity and could put it out now but want to throw a tantrum I guess.

Let's remember these responses when it comes to us gamers having issues with support.

I just went through something recently at work. It took two months to resolve and that was with me doing everything asked of me on my end but the other company not being very responsive. Needless to say, they eventually corrected the issue but I am meeting with our dealer that supplies the equipment on Monday. If we cannot get a better response from this company, we will absolutely go someplace else. The fact that MS were able to respond to this issue so quickly once it became a story tells me it could have been resolved prior to that. This kind of feels like it only became urgent on MS end when it became public. IMO, that is poor service.

We informed ID@Xbox about our predicament, but they were powerless to help as it apparently falls outside their scope of responsibility and
seems to be a Microsoft issue.

Ah yes every layer of Microsoft is like this. If you have an issue you will either run in to extremely unhelpful people who don’t know what’s happening and more importantly can’t escalate for “reasons” or they will tell you it’s “not their department” and have no idea what “department” could help.

You hit brick wall after brick wall.

As someone who has had to deal with Microshit for years and for the past few awful years Azure trash I very much sympathise with them.

I agree, to some extent. But what image they would pass if they came back in their instance? To look like they just threatened to burn the bridges to caught attention in order to got their problem solved just don't pass any credibility either. But they shouldn't disclose the answers the way they did. Again, if they kept it a secret, they would continue to be called incompetent because someone else screwed them.

Very simple. You bring little money to them, so their service to you is minimal.

That is how it works on every industry. The guy that brings more money gets the priority, while the little guys have to wait months to get stuff done.
explain Hellblade 2 then

I know nothing of this game. But fuck me if thousands of other haven’t managed to come out on the Xbox - it can’t be that hard 😂

Yeah, they said they're done, and they're sticking to their word. That's the right thing to do.
The only reason tim sweeny retweeted them and someone at MS finally replied is because they were walking away. That's not an acceptable way to have to handle things and you can't bend when offered something this late.

They are in a country/location where MS blocked their ability to sign up because they IP banned an entire region for malicious signups. Their suggestion was 'try from a different device or location', and didn't do anything until tim sweeny retweeted this. This is not on the dev.

OH NO!!!!!

Another shitty pixel-art game I will never play.

How will I ever recover?!?!?!?!!?!?!?
You want LESS choices? You want LESS offerings on your platform?

You will recover all right. You will recover when you end up forced to play on PC or buy a PS5. You are playing tough guy when the store you are suppose to be a fan of, is having difficulty stocking its shelves.

You will recover. Xbox won't.

This will only get worse in future for some devs.

I can see a point where if you're not a big publisher, MS will let Co Pilot handle all your submission processes and issues.

The firm I currently work at has moved their application to Azure, and there is now a big button for Co Pilot that you are prompted to use if you encounter problems.

That would have been my choice too. Why should I work with you now, when you have been ignoring my attempt to work this out?

Devs isnt to blame on this. Hopefully they find success on steam.

Haak has been out on Steam since August 2022.

Yeah, I guess you can react like this for this case, but this issue showed how bad they threat minor devs, maybe someday Xbox won't get another indie game which won't be "Another shitty pixel art game you won't play" but something you'd like to play...

All they had to do was demand to see the manager.

I have zero interest in this game, but because they thew a publicity tantrum, I'm going to buy the game on Steam and get a refund immediately.

I remember how much of a pain in the ass it was to get my xbox into dev mode. What should have been an easy process that takes only 5 minutes turned into weeks of frustration because of the typical strange bugs you get with Microsoft products. You don't get any actual support to fix the issue either. Only generic messages over and over again. I can understand the frustration of the developer.

Yes console owners are responsible for developer portals. Got it.
Are you slow or something?

Console owners that are blind loyalists that seem to live in denial, that never call out their chosen platform of choice for their shortcomings or draw attention to it... are the problem.

And that's what you are doing here... instead of attacking MS (or at least drawing attention to MS) for an obvious lapse in their developer portal... something that is key to getting games on their platform... especially after you have seen other devs point out having other kinds of issues with Xbox development....

You are doing the asshole thing and instead trying to attack and ridicule the developer. And even after being called out for it... you are still in denial and are more interested in being right for something that is clearly wrong.

Almost as if this is a Jez account on Gaf.

It was a joke referencing an old Bungie game that came out before some of you were even born. Sorry that I didn't jump in on the fuck Xbox dogpile.

I don't believe you. And furthermore, this is one of those situations that its not just justified, but a thousand times better "dogpiling" on Xbox who in this case clearly needs to do something about this kind of stuff... than to somehow feel it was warranted to do it to the devs instead.

And I was born a good time before Bungie existed.... still don't get the joke.
So enjoy your underpowered hardware and sub 30fps games, or enjoy your GaaS and 70$ remasters and paid cloud saves I guess ? Can be said for every brand out there.
What exactly is your point here?

I guess being a indie game for some is more about not having to deal with corporate shit than anything else.

What's crazy is... that it's people like you or fans like you that are responsible for the state Xbox is in today.

Yup.

It's wild seeing some ppl basically defend MS and attack the devs over this.
