I smell bullshit about this whole thing. I don't want to call it a conspiracy but none of this adds up.

Russia could have actually came down on the group for unwanted attention, or maybe someone robbed the bandits (wishful thinking).

It's also likely that this could be a smoke screen for the group to retire. I doubt anyone on the US side is going to take their word for it.
